G19 Report of the New Zealand Film Commission for the year ended 30 June 2011 In accordance with Sections 150 to 157 of the Crown Entities Act 2004, on behalf of the New Zealand Film Commission we present the Annual Report covering the activities of the NZFC for the 12 months ended 30 June 2011. Patsy Reddy Andrew Cornwell Chair Board Member Cover: The Orator (O Le Tulafale)/ Love Birds/ Meathead/ Blue/ My Wedding and Other Secrets/ Manurewa/ Predicament. Highlights We committed production funding to nine new feature films (including two documentaries) and also supported the completion of seven low-budget independent digital features. We provided strategic, logistic and financial support in the form of prints and advertising grants for six new NZFC-financed features released in New Zealand cinemas during the year. NZFC-financed shorts achieved success at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2011. Blue won the Cannes Critics’ Week prize for Best Short and Meathead was one of nine films selected for the Main Competition. The 61st Berlin International Film Festival awarded the Crystal Bear to short film Manurewa. Written and directed by Sam Peacocke, the film screened in the Generation 14plus Youth Section of the competition. Boy continued its success in New Zealand cinemas during 2010/11, finally completing its theatrical run with a record-breaking NZ box office total of $9.3M. -

It also supported the completion of 16 digital features. The NZFC provided strategic, logistical and financial support in the form of prints and advertising grants for seven new NZ features released in New Zealand cinemas during the year. Taika Waititi’s Contents feature filmBoy premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. It was awarded the Grand Prix award in the Generation Section of the Berlin Film Festival in February 2010 and went on to become the highest grossing NZ film of all time with a box office of more than $9 million. Gaylene Preston’s filmHome By Christmas enjoyed a highly successful cinematic release reaching $1.15 million box office. The film was nominated for 10 Qantas Film Awards. Independently financed feature documentaryThis Way of Life, directed by Tom Burstyn and produced by Sumner Burstyn, received a Special Mention in the Generation Section at the Berlin Film Festival. -

Thus ensures that all the work that we, together with the directors and their collaborators, put into making a film, and the resulting quality, may be fully appreciated by movie-goers who, in many instances, are nowadays obliged to watch films which, owing to technical inadequacies and shortcomings, do not come up to the standard of the original. -

Kerry Prendergast Tom Greally ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• CHAIR BOARD MEMBER NEW ZEALAND FILM COMMISSION Annual Report – 2017/18 33 Highlights • The New Zealand Film Commission launched its Te Rautaki Māori, a strategy based on developing an ongoing partnership with the Māori screen industry. To support the strategy, new funding opportunities and support for Māori filmmakers were also announced. • Karen Waaka-Tibble became the NZFC’s inaugural Pou Whakahare, a role established to assist in implementing Te Rautaki Māori. • The 125 Fund, a feature film fund for projects where at least two of the key creatives, including the director, are women was launched, and opened for applications in June. • Eleven feature films (including four documentaries) with NZFC production financing were released theatrically in New Zealand in the period. The title which generated the highest box office wasThe Breaker Upperers with a gross of $1,762,706 (to 30 June 2018). • The New Zealand Screen Production Grant (NZSPG) International attracted New Zealand Qualifying Production Expenditure (NZQPE) totalling $693,892,538 in the period, which triggered grant payments of $149,265,574. • 42 final NZSPG certificates were issued, 13 to New Zealand productions and 29 to international productions. -

Klasse INHALT Seit mehr als tausend Jahren leben Maori in Whangara, einer Siedlung an der Ostküste Neuseelands. Ihr Ursprungsmythos erzählt von Paikea, der einst auf einem Wal reitend die Küste erreichte. Paikea wurde das Oberhaupt der Maori von Whangara und ohne Unterbrechung gingen seitdem sein Name und sein Amt als Anführer auf den männlichen Erstgeborenen der nächsten Generation über. Bis heute werden die alten Traditionen in Whangara gepflegt. Der jetzige Träger des Paikea-Titels ist Großvater Koro, der sich besonders für die unveränderte Erhaltung der Bräuche einsetzt. Er ist überzeugt, dass Whangara untergeht, wenn die Verbindung zu den Ahnen nicht durch die althergebrachte Erbfolge weitergeführt wird. Doch die Nachfolge Koros ist unsicher, denn der Erbe des Amtes stirbt schon bei der Geburt. Nur die Zwillingsschwester des Babys überlebt und wird gegen den Willen des Großvaters Pai genannt. Aber Großvater Koro hält eisern an der Tradition fest. Für ihn ist es ausgeschlossen, dass ein Mädchen zum Oberhaupt Whangaras wird. Als Pai 12 Jahre alt ist, beginnt ihr Großvater unter den anderen Jungen des Volkes nach einem Erben zu suchen. Pai versucht alles, um ihrem geliebten Koro zu beweisen, dass sie genauso wie jeder Junge für den Titel des Paikea geeignet ist. Doch sie erfährt nur Ablehnung, wird vom Unterricht in den alten Bräuchen ausgeschlossen und schließlich glaubt der Großvater sogar, dass Pais Geburt für die Maori von Whangara Unglück bedeutet.
