INTRODUCTION

This Information Book is designed to give Members some practical information to help on arrival at the General Synod venue, Melbourne Grammar School, and to provide orientation for the Session.

The book contains details of the program, worship opportunities and other arrangements for the Session.

Some information about guest speakers is included.

There is a list of Members, most of whom have provided information which may assist with elections.

The host of the Session, the Diocese of Melbourne, has provided a Local Arrangements Committee which has been responsible for the vast bulk of the practical arrangements for this Session of the General Synod. Their work has extended far beyond what is apparent from the contents of this book or what Members will see at the venue. We owe a substantial debt of gratitude to the Local Arrangements Committee and to the volunteers who perform so many of the functions that facilitate the gathering and the work of the Synod.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME

THE CONSTITUTION, CANONS AND RULES OF GENERAL SYNOD

The procedure of the General Synod is largely governed by Chapter V of the Constitution and the Standing Orders made by the General Synod. Elections are governed by Rule III. These are all printed in Book 1 of the General Synod papers, Synod Procedure and Elections. Familiarity with this material will promote efficient process and enhance your experience of the Synod.

Every Synod Member would benefit by having a copy of the The General Synod Constitution and Canons 2007, popularly known as the Green Book, which contains Canons and Rules which will be the subject of amending Bills at this session of the Synod. Having access to that material will make the proposed amendments and the debates more meaningful. Copies of the Green Book can be obtained from Broughton Books Pty Limited. Orders may be directed to [email protected] quoting ISSN 10393900 The Constitution Canons and Rules of General Synod 2007 and a quantity for order.

GUEST SPEAKERS

CLARE AMOS

Clare Amos is Director for Theological Studies in the Anglican Communion Office. Her roles there include responsibility for both theological education and inter faith concerns, and she also works alongside Stephen Lyon in the recently established project on ‘The Bible in the Life of the Church’.

Clare studied theology at Cambridge University, England, and then spent 10 years in the Middle East, initially in Jerusalem and then in the Lebanon. Initially she studied at the Ecole Biblique, Jerusalem, and then worked as Course Director at St George’s College, Jerusalem. Her experience at St George’s College – which offers short courses linked to the Bible and the Holy Land, to a range of Christians, particularly Anglicans, from all round the world introduced her to the Anglican Communion in all its glorious complexity and variety. After her marriage to Alan Amos, then Anglican chaplain in Beirut, Clare lived and worked in Lebanon both at the Middle East Council of Churches and at the Near East School of Theology, Beirut, where ministers for a variety of Protestant Churches in the Middle East are trained. Clare’s years in Beirut, which included some of the worst years of the Lebanese civil war and the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982 influenced her growing interest in inter faith concerns.

On returning to England, both Alan and Clare took up positions at Westcott House theological college, Cambridge, where Clare taught biblical studies and acted as Director of Studies. Since leaving Westcott she has been involved in a variety of forms of theological education – for both clergy and lay people – in full time and part time contexts. As an Anglican laywoman herself, Clare has a passion to help ‘all God’s people to become theologians’. Clare began to work for the Anglican world mission agency USPG as their theological adviser in 2000, but over the last decade has been invited to assume increasing responsibilities in the Anglican Communion office, although she still maintains some links with USPG.

Clare has published quite extensively in the areas both of biblical studies and inter faith concerns. She contributed the volume on Genesis in the Epworth Bible commentary series. Drawing on personal experiences of her time in Jerusalem and the Lebanon, her commentary sought to take seriously the Middle East contexts in which Genesis is read today. She offered the Bible studies on Mark’s Gospel at the 14th meeting of the Anglican Consultative Council in Jamaica, and these have recently been published under the title ‘Marking the Way’. She has a special passion for the biblical accounts of the transfiguration of Christ and her personal ‘vision’ is to produce one day an integrated theology of the Anglican Way which takes the transfiguration as its starting point. Clare also enjoys writing prayers and 6-015

meditations. Alan and Clare have one son, Robin, who is just beginning university. Clare’s family experience, and her theology and spirituality mutually inform each other, as for example in the following reflection on Matthew 20.17-28:

That’s right – blame it all on Mum! Mothers have a lot to answer for (Or at least their children tell them so). James and John must have been quite a handful: ‘Sons of thunder’ no less, but she loved them still. She didn’t know what she was asking – Else she would have sealed her lips tight shut. For top places in an upside-down kingdom, Require us to sit at the bottom of the table, Waiting till everyone else has been fed. Ah well, at least they can still drink from the cup – Yes, that one which Jesus himself quaffed, One night when they waited with him in dark Gethsemane And found it difficult to stay awake.

BIBLE STUDIES

Four Gospel writers, four perspectives on mission

One of the “treasures of the Anglican Communion” is our statement known as the “Five Marks of Mission”. Do look it up on the Anglican Communion website if you don’t already know of it. It sets out an expansive and holistic vision of mission, which includes evangelism, the nurturing of members of the Christian community, the quest for justice, the support of and care for the suffering, and a vision for the healing of God’s earth. All these aspects are embraced within our understanding of the mission of God. The Anglican Five Marks of Mission is the envy of many other churches, several of whom have also adopted it as a statement they want to affirm.

In the Bible studies and the sermon that I have been asked to deliver at your General Synod I feel called to focus on mission. Somebody recently said to me that mission – and the groups and networks that help to sustain it – are the life-blood of the body of the Anglican Communion. By choosing one passage from each of the four Gospel-writers to focus on I am wanting to explore with you the variety and breadth of understanding of mission there is in the New Testament itself. Each of the different evangelists, I believe, have different, yet significant, insights to share.

When you get to General Synod you will receive copies of the particular passages I will be focusing on each day.

6-016

Guest Speakers

They are:

John 21:1-19 Mark 9:1-8 Matthew 28:16-20 Acts 6:1-15

(Note that I say “Gospel-writers” above – Luke wrote both a Gospel and the book of Acts! But I will be touching on passages in Luke’s Gospel as well).

However you well may find it helpful to have a Bible to hand as I will also be alluding to other passages in the Gospels on each occasion.

I am very much looking forward to being with you, and grateful for the privilege of sharing my vision of the Gospels and the vision of the richness of God’s realm that they offer us.

Clare Amos.

MELBOURNE GRAMMAR SCHOOL

The origins of Melbourne Grammar School lie in the vision and perserverance of Melbourne’s first young Church of England Bishop, Charles Perry, who founded the Diocese of Melbourne. Charles Perry opened an “experimental” grammar school in 1849 at St Peter’s Eastern Hill (East Melbourne) to meet the growing educational needs of the young colony.

Melbourne Grammar School, 1876

Almost ten years later his dream of building a permanent, centrally located grammar school was realized with a grant from the Colonial Government of 15 acres on St Kilda Road. Melbourne Church of England Grammar School opened in 1858 with Dr John Bromby as the first Headmaster and 136 students enrolling in the first year.

In its 150 years, Melbourne Grammar School has produced distinguished and varied graduates from its bluestone walls. Three Prime Ministers, Antarctic explorers, over one hundred Anglican clergy, the first Australian artist to be admitted to the Royal Academy, servicemen, academics, businessmen, industrialists, members of professions, musicians, actors, politicians, farmers, and many other Australians who have made invaluable contributions to this country’s growth.

The School’s history is embodied in the lives and achievements of all who have learnt and taught here.

A history of the School, Challenging Traditions by Weston Bate and Helen Penrose, was published in 2002 and is an invaluable reference.

SCHOOL CREST AND MOTTO

The school motto, Ora et Labora (Pray and Work), was chosen by the second Headmaster, Edward Morris, in 1875.

Morris was an old boy of England's Rugby School. He exemplified the way the principles of the English Public School system were transplanted to Australia including that education and religion went hand in hand as envisaged by Bishop Perry.

CHAPEL OF ST PETER

The daily Eucharist will be conducted in the Chapel of St Peter in Melbourne Grammar School.

This notable bluestone building is the first purpose built school chapel in Victoria. It was built in 1892-93 to a design by a E Johnson in the modern British tradition of Pearson and Burges.

As a dominant feature of the main school quadrangle, the Chapel symbolizes the School’s Christian ethos and is an oasis of quiet in the teeming life of a large school. It is a sacred canopy where solemn commitments are made in baptism, confirmation, marriage and bereavement.

The Chapel is used daily during term for worship. There is a Choral Eucharist each Friday at 8:30 a.m. and boarders attend Eucharist on Sunday evenings.

Invaluable gifts have been made to the Chapel – silver, fabric, linen, stained glass, embroidered kneelers, bells – and there is always the possibility of similar endowments being gratefully received to enhance the beauty of a much loved building.

ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL

The Synod service will be conducted in St Paul’s Cathedral at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, 19 September 2010.

St Paul’s Cathedral is the metropolitical and Cathedral Church of the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne. It is the seat of the Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne and Metropolitan of the Province of Victoria. The Cathedral is a major Melbourne landmark located in the centre of Melbourne on the eastern corner of Swanston Street and Flinders Street. It is diagonally opposite Flinders Street Station and immediately to the south of Federation Square, Melbourne’s new public heart. The Cathedral commands the southern approaches to the city.

St Paul’s is built on the site of Melbourne’s first Christian service, conducted on the banks of the Yarra a few months after Melbourne was founded in 1835. The area was a market until 1848, when St Paul’s Parish Church, a bluestone church, was built on the site. As Melbourne grew rapidly, this Parish Church was demolished in 1885 to make way for the new Cathedral which replaced St James Old Cathedral which then stood at the corner of William Street and Collins Street.

The Cathedral is an example of a revival gothic transitional building, partly Early English and partly Decorated and was designed by the English Architect, William Butterfield. After Butterfield resigned the commission because of disputes with church authorities, Joseph Reed, a local architect, completed the building with spires which differ from the original design.

The Cathedral is constructed from Barrabool Hills sandstone and Waurn Ponds limestone embellishments and, therefore, has a warm yellow-brown colouring which contrasts with Melbourne’s characteristic blue-grey public buildings made from bluestone. The spires are made from Sydney sandstone. The Cathedral’s Moorhouse Tower is the second highest Anglican spire in the world after Salisbury Cathedral. The Australian Institute of Architects recognised the restoration works with the Lachlan Macquarie National Award for Heritage Architecture in 2009.

The Cathedral’s peel of 13 bells was donated by Thomas Edwardes.

The pipe organ, housed in the south transept, was built by T.C. Lewis & Co of Brixton, England and was played at the Cathedral’s opening in 1891. It has four manuals with 44 stops and pedals with 9 stops, all with electro- pneumatic action.
