Los cincuenta años de su desaparición física se prestan mucho para los discursos de circunstancia, tanto como para los ninguneos displicentes de la academia, entretenida con los últimos bizantinismos de moda.     Varieties of Pragmatism: Carlos Vaz Ferreira, William James, and the “Cash-Value” of Feminism by Amy Oliver Varieties of Pragmatism: Carlos Vaz Ferreira, William James, and the “Cash- Value” of Feminism by Amy Oliver English Abstract The major Uruguayan social philosopher Carlos Vaz Ferreira (1871–1958), best known for his works Living Logic (1920) and Fermentary (1938), also produced feminist philosophy in Batllist Uruguay that is still considered theoretically rich today. Vaz Ferreira was a pioneer in feminist theory; his impact and feminist projects together demonstrate a telling lesson about feminism in Latin America. This paper shows that although Vaz Ferreira was a critic of Pragmatism, especially that of William James, he employed its methods in On Feminism (1933) to formulate his positions on women’s issues in Latin America. Vaz Ferreira’s writings and feminist political stance had significant impact on women’s rights throughout Latin America. Resumen en español El filósofo uruguayo Carlos Vaz Ferreria (1871-1958), bien conocido por sus obras Lógica viva (1920) y Fermentario (1938), también produjo filosofía feminista en el Uruguay de José Batlle y Ordóñez que todavía se considera rica y actualizada. Vaz Ferreira fue pionero de la filosofía feminista. El impacto de su pensamiento feminista demuestra algo importante sobre la historia del pensamiento latinoamericano. Este ensayo analiza a Vaz Ferreira como crítico del pragmatismo de William James.     Page 1 of 17 Latin American Philosophy by Alexander V. Stehn (University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) This article outlines the history of Latin American philosophy: the thinking of its indigenous peoples, the debates over conquest and colonization, the arguments for national independence in the eighteenth century, the challenges of nation-building and modernization in the nineteenth century, the concerns over various forms of development in the twentieth century, and the diverse interests in Latin American philosophy during the opening decades of the twenty-first century. Rather than attempt to provide an exhaustive and impossibly long list of scholars’ names and dates, this article outlines the history of Latin American philosophy while trying to provide a meaningful sense of detail by focusing briefly on individual thinkers whose work points to broader philosophical trends that are inevitably more complex and diverse than any encyclopedic treatment can hope to capture. The term “Latin American philosophy” refers broadly to philosophy in, from, or about Latin America. However, the definitions of both “Latin America” and “philosophy” are historically fluid and contested, leading to even more disagreement when combined. “Latin America” typically refers to the geographic areas on the American continent where languages derived from Latin are widely spoken: Portuguese in Brazil, and Spanish in most of Central America, South America, and parts of the Caribbean. The French- speaking parts of the Caribbean are sometimes included as well, but all mainland North American regions north of the Rio Grande are excluded in spite of French being widely spoken in Canada. Although it is anachronistic to speak of Latin American philosophy before the 1850s when the term “Latin America” first entered usage, most scholars agree that Latin American philosophy extends at least as far back as the sixteenth century when the Spanish founded the first schools and seminaries in the “New World”.

    FILOSOFIA LATINO-AMERICANA E O PRAGMATISMO NORTE-AMERICANO: O PENSAMENTO DE VAZ FERREIRA 1 Kevin Daniel dos Santos Leyser Adolfo Ramos Lamar2 A Revista HISTEDBR On-line RESUMO publica artigos resultantes de Este artigo visa a identificar e descrever o diálogo e as conexões estudos e pesquisas científicas existentes entre o pragmatismo norte americano e a filosofia latino- que abordam a educação como americana. Deste modo, exploramos especificamente a produção fenômeno social em sua teórica de Carlos Vaz Ferreira, do Uruguai, enfatizando os pontos de vinculação com a reflexão contato, de influência e de diálogo com o pragmatismo norte- histórica americano. As intersecções entre o pensamento destes autores apontam para o desenvolvimento de ambas tradições como não sendo isoladas uma da outra. Isto é, é possível constatar, ainda que de maneira limitada, que há pontos de intersecção entre desenvolvimentos lineares na história dessas tradições filosóficas e que estudar estes pontos evidencia que no diálogo entre as tradições de pensamento nas Américas manifesta-se a preocupação, por exemplo, com a experiência vivida prática, o anti-cartesianismo, o falibilismo e o pluralismo.     8 Editor’s Introduction Medicina opens with a long quotation of the section from the ninth book of the Natural History, where Pliny famously summed up the history of medicine as a long inconclusive succession of medical sects, all purporting to be right but all unable to reach true knowledge of the causes of disease. Echoing Pliny’s arguments, Sabuco says that the Saracens and the Chinese, who have no professional physicians, have a larger population than the Spaniards (in other words, they have a lower mortality rate). “Only in this art [i.e., medicine] may anybody declare himself a physician without being such; no other falsehood implies more danger and damage [than the medical falsehood], and less punishment at the same time: only the doctor is allowed to kill with impunity.”16 This dialogue On the True Medicine is the text that is translated and presented here, as part of the “Other Voice in Early Modern Europe” series.17 It is, as we shall see, a text that bears a significant relation to the Renaissance Querelle des femmes, beyond the remarkable circumstance of being emphatically presented as the work of a woman author. But before we examine in detail the content of the Dialogue on the True Medicine and locate it in the context of the medical and cultural world of the late Renaissance, as I shall try to do in this Introduction, we have to address a preliminary question.
