  • What Is Early Childhood Education?
    preface I became a teacher of young children many years ago, when the field of early childhood education was quite different from what it is today. After graduating from college with an English degree, I got a job as a preschool teacher in a child care center. I will never forget my first day of teaching. One reason I remember it so well is that it was so long! Feeling completely incompetent, I seriously thought about not going back the next day. Then I realized that although I had a choice not to return, the children did not. They deserved a better teacher than I was at that time. As a result, I continued teaching, went back to school, and set out to learn as much as possible about child development and how best to teach young children. And I have been learning ever since. Why I Wrote This Book When I first began teaching, I realized that were too many things I didn’t know about child development, how and what to teach, how to communicate with families, how to positively guide children’s behavior—the list goes on and on. I wrote this book because I wanted to help ensure that every child has a qualified teacher from day one. In this book I share what I have learned about the competence of young children, their desire to learn engaging, challenging curriculum content, and effective ways of teaching. To achieve their potential, children need and deserve highly competent, well-educated teach- ers. My hope is that teachers, whether beginning their professional journey or continuing their professional development, will embrace new knowledge as well as the enduring val- ues of early childhood education, and encounter the sheer joy of teaching young children.

Sullivan, Jr Northborough, MA Jan 2003 Created by www.AncestralAuthor.com 2 www.WheelockGenealogy.com 3 Introduction The Wheelock Family of Eden and Cambridge has left few direct clues about their ancestry. The clues that exist are indirect and sometimes contradictory. Nonetheless, a reasonably clear picture can be constructed from the bits and pieces of evidence found in the historical record. Lucy Wheelock, founder of Wheelock College in Boston, descends from the Eden and Cambridge Wheelocks, which makes this line all the more interesting. Marcus Warren Waite, in his book "The Wheelock Family of Calais, VT" identifies the Eden Wheelocks as descendants of Gershom Wheelock, son of Ralph; yet says nothing further about them. Walter Toby Wheelock, in his book "The Wheelock Family in America, 1637-1969" goes a bit farther and makes note that Stephen Wheelock and Lucretia Newton were in Hubbardston, Massachusetts in 1781 "and they (or son) later moved to Eden, VT"; but nothing further is said, no supportive evidence is offered, and the line is not followed past their children. But the statement points us in the right direction. The next clue involves their daughter, Tabitha. The census shows Stephen Wheelock in Hubbardston in 1790, then in Cheshire County, NH in 1800. The Keene, Chesire Co, NH vital records give the birth of Tabitha Wheelock as 21 Sep 1788, Eden, VT; while the Hubbardston vital records give a date exactly one year off, 21 Sep 1787, daughter of Stephen and Lucretia.

WHEELOCK PREFACE This genealogy was written principally for the current descendants of Ralph Wheelock, dating from his arrival in America. It is my hope that future generations will add the necessary dates as the years pass. Our family has a distinguished heritage with qualities of intelligence, courage, and determination that should continue to be an inspiration for future generations. The research for this book has covered a period of 14 years. My mother, Harriet Tobey Wheelock, was always interested in family history and we started compiling the letters together with a published version in mind as far back as 1955. It could not, however, have become a reality without the letters and records loaned to me by Leon H. Smith of New Paltz, New York. Among the many who have helped make this compilation possible, have been my family, John M. Dauray of Uxbridge, Mary G. and Perley C. Wheelock of Woonsocket. Their enthusiasm and interest for this research have been bound­ less. I would also like to thank those who so generously loaned me the photo­ graphs that are reproduced in this publication. Murphy 2005 Some Vermont Vital Records of the Early 19th Century compiled by John Elliott Bowman The vital records contained herein were transcribed from index cards found in two drawers of a filing cabinet at the Vermont Historical Society. They consist of items relating to Vermont deaths and marriages in the early part of the 19th century. These records were compiled by John Elliott Bowman from various newspapers, chiefly dated between 1802-1838, with a single reference to a 1796 issue of the Keene, N.H., Rising Sun, and one of the same year to Spooner’s Vermont Journal. It is not clear whether all issues within the various time periods were searched.
