    Diner Het diner werd gehouden op het terras van ons hotel in de chique badplaats Deauville. Het werd aangeboden door Jean-Roger Groult, aan wie wij de volgende dag een bezoek zouden brengen. Calvados Roger Groult Wij worden ontvangen met een heerlijk aperitief, Calvados Blanc met tonic en een schijfje limoen. “Clos de la Hurvanière” De familie Groult maakt sinds 1850 Calvados AOC Pays d’Auge op het landgoed “Clos de la Hurvanière” te Saint-Cyr du Ronceray en heeft een grote naam opgebouwd. Na de dood van Jean-Pierre Groult in 2008 kreeg zijn zoon Jean-Roger Groult – 8e generatie - de leiding van de distilleerderij. Het bedrijf is met 8 werknemers niet al te groot, en Jean-Roger wil dat zo houden. De export bedraagt 55%, en wel naar 25 landen. Jean- Roger is lid van de groep Esprit Calvados en van Vignobles & Signatures. Jean-Roger Groult Oogst De bodem van de boomgaarden bestaat uit een toplaag van leem op een onderbodem van klei met vuursteen. Op 23 hectare eigen boomgaarden staan 5.600 appelbomen, goed voor de helft van de benodigde 500 tot 600 ton appelen per jaar. Er is ook nieuwe aanplant van boomgaarden, maar het duurt 40 jaar voordat de appelen bruikbaar zijn. De boomgaarden liggen meestal op heuvels, waardoor ze geen last hebben van overstromingen. Op 17 hectare staan minstens 1,25 m hoge bomen (hautes tiges, betere kwaliteit) en op 6 hectare lage bomen (basses tiges, hogere productie). De andere helft van de appelen wordt bijgekocht van naburige appelkwekers. We lopen met Jean-Roger door de boomgaarden.
