Luis Hot rock and ice: Volcanic chain underlies Antarctica Summary: Scientists were able to deploy ruggidized seismometers that could withstand intense cold in Antarctica only recently. A line of seismometers strung across the West Antarctic Rift Valley and the Marie Byrd Land have given geologists their first good look at the mantle beneath the ice and rocks, revealing areas of hot rock that might affect the behavior of the overlying ice sheet. The contrast between the surface and the depth is nowhere starker -- or more important -- than in Antarctica. What is causing the mysterious line of volcanoes that emerge from the ice sheet there, and what does it mean for the future of the ice? Our understanding of what's going on is really hampered because we can't see the geology, said Andrew Lloyd, main author of the study. We have to turn to geophysical methods like seismology to learn more. Lloyd helped deploy research seismometers across the West Antarctic Rift System and Marie Byrd Land in the austral summer of 2009-10. He then returned in late 2011 and snow mobiled more than 1600 km, living in a Scott tent, to recover the precious data. The recordings the instruments made of the reverberations of distant earthquakes from January 2010 to January 2012 were used to create maps of seismic velocities beneath the rift valley. An analysis of the maps was published online in the JGR: Solid Earth. This is the first time seismologists have been able to deploy instruments rugged enough to survive a winter in this part of the frozen continent, and so this is the first detailed look at Earth beneath this region. -

Mt Sidley 4285m A stunning Mountain in an extreme environment Antarctica at its very best, a white wilderness EXPEDITION OVERVIEW Perhaps THE most remote mountain the world (sorry, but also one of THE most expensive to climb) Impressive and exceptionally remote; Mount Sidley is to be found in one of Antarctica’s least travelled corners of its polar ice sheet, making it a truly special place to visit. To date there have been very few ascents of this - Antarctica’s highest volcano. It is one of the Volcanic ‘Seven Summits’ highest volcanoes on each continent. One side of the mountains forms a huge caldera crater with a diameter of 5 km, with its internal walls forming a sheer one kilometre high cliff of ice. On the other side there are blue ice slopes that rise gently to the crater rim giving access to its summit. Sidley’s spectacular remote setting is a ‘must do’ for adventurous mountaineers in search of one of the most remote and unique places on earth! Below, you will find how our itineraries across all of our experiences for the 2021-22 season will be modified. Punta Arenas • You will be required to arrive in Punta Arenas 4 nights prior to your departure. • Welcome and Safety Briefings will be done virtually. • There will be no fitting periods for Rental Clothing in the Punta Arenas office, instead clothing will be picked up at a specified location and time. Further information will be given upon arrival in Punta Arenas. • Your Gear Checks will be done virtually and we will explain to you how this will be done once you arrive in Punta Arenas. • Flight Check in and Baggage Drop Off will be done using COVID-19 safe practices and you will receive more information on how this will be done on arrival in Punta Arenas. • You will be required to complete and sign a COVID-19 Declaration prior to your departure. The initial landing was made at Lovill Bluff (figure 1) by helicopter, piloted by LCDR Rick McLean and crewed by AM2 Robert OConner. THE GEOCHEMICAL EVOLUTION OF ALKALINE MAGMAS FROM THE CRARY MOUNTAINS, MARIE BYRD LAND, ANTARCTICA SUVANKAR CHAKRABORTY A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE May 2007 Committee: Kurt Panter, Advisor John Farver Thomas Wilch © 2007 Suvankar Chakraborty All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Kurt Panter, Advisor Late Cenozoic alkaline volcanism in the Crary Mountains, Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica is associated with the West Antarctic rift system. More than 400 km 3 (LeMasurier et al., 1990) of alkaline magmas were erupted from four major volcanic centers. Based on previous field and dating studies the volcanism occurred between ~9 and <1 Ma and the activity migrated to the south at a rate of ~0.7 cm/yr. The Crary Mountains represent one of four ranges of volcanoes in Marie Byrd Land that show this type of age progression; younging away from the center of the province (LeMasurier and Rex, 1989; Panter et al., 2000). The volcanic deposits at the Crary Mountains consist of lavas and interbedded agglutinated scoria deposits as well as thick hydrovolcanic sequences (hyaloclastites, pillow breccia, tuff) all of which range in composition from basanite to intermediate types to phonolite, trachyte, and rhyolite. This study focuses exclusively on lava samples that are fresh and unaltered. Basaltic rocks are consisting of olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase and titanomagnetite phenocrysts. Phenocrysts found in intermediate to felsic compositions include of olivine, clinopyroxene, alkali amphibole, alkali and plagioclase feldspars, nepheline, apatite, titanomagnetite, and aenigmatite. Most of the phenocrysts of different rock types are either unzoned or normally zoned and disequilibrium textures are rare.
