The Friends of Bracken Hall Guided Walks programme

The Friends of Bracken Hall Countryside Centre have announced the programme of walks for the period 01-04-15 to 30-06-15. Join Chair of the Friends of Bracken Hall and experienced walk leader, John Dallas, to explore ’s countryside, all starting opposite Bracken Hall, Glen Road, , BD17 5EA, unless otherwise indicated.

Please come prepared for the weather! We recommend:

• Comfortable waterproof footwear • Suitable clothing to keep you warm and dry • A supply of water and a snack • Hot drink if it’s chilly • Sun screen and a hat if it’s hot

Please bring change for public transport where indicated by the '#' symbol. The nature of countryside terrain means that most of these walks require a moderate level o f agility and some sections have limited accessibility.

Date: 17-04-15, Friday Start time: 1030 Name: Hawksworth Spring Woods Start location: Opposite Bracken Hall Walk length: 12.0km/7.5mi Leader: John Dallas Details: Meet at Bracken Hall for a walk up Shipley Glen and around Baildon Moor to Sconce. Here we head down through the fields to Hawksworth Spring Woods. we'll return via Park dam, Hazel Heads, Baildon and Baildon Bank.

Date: 18-04-15, Saturday Start time: 1030 Name: BWaW Walk: to Bracken Hall Countryside Centre Start location: Bingley Little Theatre, Bingly, West . Walk length: 10.9km/6.8mi Leader: John Dallas Details: Meet outside Bingley Little Theatre for a Bingley Walkers are Welcome walk along the and Liverpool Canal to Dowley Gap. Here we join the and walk next to Spring and Bull Coppy woods to Hirst Mill. We'll walk up through Shipley Glen to Bracken Hall Countryside Centre and return down the glen passing to Roberts Park and . We return to Bingley joining the canal again to Hirst wood, through this lovely woodland to Dowley Gap and on to Bingley along the canal tow path, or weather permitting, walk through Hirst wood and along the River Aire to Cottingley Bridge and then along Beck Lane to Myrtle Park and back to the start of the walk.

Date: 08-05-15, Friday Start time: 1030 Name: Baildon Boundary walk Start location: Opposite Bracken Hall Walk length: 10.9km/6.8mi Leader: John Dallas Details: Meet at Bracken Hall Countryside Centre, walking down Prod lane and the tramway path (Dixon's Mill lane) to Roberts park and then along the River Aire, passing Baildon Bridge and ND Denso Nature Reserve to Lane. We then turn left, cross Road and up to Tong Park village. From here we go to the war memorial, down to Tong Park dam and up through Hawksworth Spring woods to Sconce and then around the Baildon Moor boundary wall to Golcar farm, down through Glovershaw farm, Shipley Glen and back to Bracken Hall.

Date: 29-05-15, Friday Start time: 1030 Name: Esholt Start location: Opposite Bracken Hall Walk length: 16.8km/10.5mi Leader: John Dallas Details: Meet at Bracken Hall CC, walking via Shipley Glen, Baildon Bank, Baildon Village, Strawberry Fields, Moorside, Tong Park dam, through the golf course on the former public ` owned/council managed Lamb Springs Farm to Otley Road. We cross and head down towards Esholt via 'Bunkers Hill' and into the village. We return along Esholt Lane and along the River Aire footpath passing a massive tree, a variety of Italian Poplar, the Baildon/Idle/ footbridge, ND Denso nature reserve to Baildon Bridge. We cross Otley Road here and walk along the riverside path to Saltaire where we join the Leeds and Liverpool Canal into Saltaire village and then through Roberts Park, up the Glen tramway bridleway to Shipley Glen, where our walk is complete.

Date: 26-06-15, Friday Start time: 1030 Name: (#) Moor Start location: Opposite Bracken Hall Walk length: 13.6km/8.5mi Leader: John Dallas Details: Meet at Bracken Hall Countryside Centre and walk up the glen, through Glovershaw and Golcar farms to the 'top road'. Then on to Dick Hudsons, crossing the road and up and onto the moor opposite this pub. Follow the moor path to the Aire/Wharfe watershed, near to Lanshaw Lass and Lad, turning right, follow paths to the ancient sheep enclosure. From here our route heads north to Ilkley Quarry, where we follow the moor road down into Ilkley to return to Baildon or Shipley by Train. From Baildon, walk along Station Road and through Threshfield, along Baildon Bank to Shipley Glen and back to Bracken Hall - alternatively from Shipley, along the Leeds and Liverpool canal to Saltaire, through Roberts Park, the Shipley Glen Tramway Path and finishing at Bracken Hall.
