Today’s Walks Today’s starting points: 1. A: Craven Heifer 2. B+,B,C: Grassington

Sharp Haw & Cracoe Fell with Dave Colbert

Grade. A Distance 12 miles / 19km Approximate Climbing 2450ft / 750m Our meandering route starts just north of the Craven Heifer on the to Grassington road so as to avoid passing None-go-Bye Farm and paying a terrible price. We follow paths and tracks to ascend Sharp Haw, an interesting little hillock albeit 1171ft/357m in height, thence Rough Haw and the various elevations of Flasby Fell before veering off to and ascending Cracoe Fell with its prominent obelisk. From the trig point on Thorpe Fell we head north down to Thorpe, crossing the River Wharfe at the impressive Linton Falls to reach Grassington.

Threshfield Moor with Barry Mather . Grade B+ Distance 10 miles /16km Climbing 1400ft / 427m

Leaving Grassington we cross the River Wharfe by the bridge at the impressive Linton Falls. We then start our gradual climb, passing through to the caravan site at Wood Nook. No problem finding our way from here as there is a board warning us to keep to the way marks as anyone trespassing will be dealt with accordingly – how, they do not say: thumb screws? Pillory? The rack? Who knows? We are in Yorkshire after all. You have been warned. We then cross Malham Moor before descending to Conistone with Kilnsey Crag on our left. Shortly after leaving Conistone we start our second climb, but do not worry it’s not for long and it will be worth it. When we reach Grass Wood Nature reserve we descend to the River Wharfe which we follow, passing Ghaistrill’s Strid, back to Grassington.

Grassington Groundbreaker with Susan Grierson Grade B Distance 9½ miles /15km Climbing1000ft / 305m

We head south from the car park to Linton Falls before turning west through farmland past the edge of Threshfield and through Skirethorns and Wood Nook Caravan Park. We continue west to reach the height Laithe where we turn north on a bridleway across the very exposed Malham Moor to Kilnsey. Here we cross the River Wharfe to Conistone. We then proceed south along a minor road to enter Grass Wood Nature Reserve. We leave the wood after about a mile and cross agricultural land, joining the Dales Way for a short distance back into Grassington. This walk is similar in its route to the B+ walk, but is a little shorter and involves less climbing.

Dales Dawdle with Alison & Lesley Grade C Distance 5 miles /8km Climbing 459ft / 140m

We begin our walk from Grassington car park (toilets available). The first section of our walk takes us slowly uphill following Grassington’s main street and on to High Lane. A short distance along High Lane we take a footpath over the fields, enjoying the views on the way. Turning south east we continue across narrow fields, passing Wise House and Garnshaw House. There are several stone wall stiles along this section. Descending to the road (B6265) we turn left and then right to walk into the small village of Hebden. From here we follow Hebden Beck down to the hamlet of Mill Bridge and the River Wharfe. There are stepping stones and a suspension bridge over the river. At this point we join the Dales Way as we begin our leisurely walk along the river bank to Sedber Lane and up into the Grassington car park. In Grassington there are a number of cafés, shops and galleries for those who would like to browse.
