Built in 1944, the monument initially represented the memory of the victims of the Lidice Massacre in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia while simultaneously symbolizing the patriotic efforts of the Phillips community during World War II. After the memorial’s rededication in 1984 the meaning of the monument to the community shifted. While still commemorating Lidice, the annual commemorations gave rise to the Phillips Czechoslovakian Community Festival held each year. The memorial became a site of cultural identity for the Phillips community and is

Helena Way Aurora, Colorado 80015 USA First Published 2003 COMPLETE TWENTIETH CENTURY SUBJECT INDEX INTRODUCTION The Society for Czechoslovak Philately was founded in March 1939 and the first issue of THE CZECHOSLOVAK SPECIALIST was published in May 1939. From that first issue until January 1990, it was printed as a monthly periodical. From January 1991 on, it became a bi-monthly publication with more than double the number of pages per issue. Wolfgang Fritzsche first compiled a SPECIALIST Index in 1964. In 1974, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stollnitz put together the first Subject Index and combined it with a Priced Catalog of Postal Stationery. Anne Vondra thereafter indexed the period from 1974 to 1980. The two Indexes were combined into a Subject Index published in June 1980 as vol. 44, whole number 419 of THE CZECHOSLOVAK SPECIALIST. This Index was further expanded to a Cumulative Index encompassing the period from 1939 to 1992. But in the year 2000, Anne Vondra compiled a complete 60-year Subject Index embodying every issue of THE SPECIALIST published during its uninterrupted period of existence up to the end of the 20th century. The new Subject Index contains numerous abbreviations. Veškeré literární prameny a informace, které jsem v práci využila, jsou uvedeny v seznamu použité literatury. Byla jsem seznámena s tím, že se na moji práci vztahují práva a povinnosti vyplývající ze zákona č. 121/2000 Sb., autorský zákon, zejména se skutečností, že Univerzita Pardubice má právo na uzavření licenční smlouvy o užití této práce jako školního díla podle § 60 odst. 1 autorského zákona, a s tím, že pokud dojde k užití této práce mnou nebo bude poskytnuta licence o užití jinému subjektu, je Univerzita Pardubice oprávněna ode mne požadovat přiměřený příspěvek na úhradu nákladů, které na vytvoření díla vynaložila, a to podle okolností až do jejich skutečné výše. Characteristics of the Region
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE REGION The Středočeský Region lies in the centre of Bohemia. Its area, number of municipalities, and population make it the largest region of the Czech Republic. The Region’s area (10,928 km2 as at 31 December 2017) covered almost 14% of the CR’s area and was about 2 times larger than the average area of a region in the CR. The Středočeský Region is surrounding the Capital City of Prague from all sides and borders almost all the Regions of Bohemia except for the Karlovarský Region and Moravian Regions. It has a relatively little broken terrain. The north and the east are flat, highlands prevail in the south and the southwest. The highest point of the territory is the peak called Tok (altitude 865 m) in the Brdy Mountains in the Příbram District; the lowest point is the riverbed of the Labe River (altitude 153 m) in the Mělník District. The Region divides into 12 districts with 10 district authority municipalities. By area, the largest is the Příbram District (14.3% of the Region’s area); the smallest is the Praha-západ District (5.3% of the Region’s area). As at 1 January 2003, when the state administration reform came into force, district authorities were cancelled; however, districts as territorial units did not cease to exist. At the same time, territorial districts of municipalities with authorised municipal authority of the 2nd level and administrative districts of municipalities with extended powers of the 3rd level were established. In the Středočeský Region, there are 26 administrative districts of municipalities with extended powers, which differ a lot as for their size.

Lidice: Remembering the Women and Children

Illichmann Faculty Sponsors: Greg Wegner, Department of Education, Deborah Hoskins, Department of Women’s Studies ABSTRACT The purpose of this research project is to preserve the memory of the survivors of the razing of Lidice, a village in Czech Republic. On June 10th, 1942, the Nazis destroyed the village, blaming a few of its inhabitants for assassinating Reinhart Heydrich, the Nazi Protector of the country. The Nazis threatened others in the countries they occupied with this kind of brutality; Lidice served as an example of what would happen if anyone opposed the Nazi regime. All of the men in Lidice were brutally murdered, and the few survivors were women and children. Their stories are left untold, along with the many children from the village who disappeared. Thirty-three survivors still remain in the rebuilt village of Lidice and the intention of this research is to share some of their stories, as well as acquire a better understanding of what happened to the missing children and thus preserve this portion of history. METHODS When first exploring the possibilities of a research grant involving the Lidice tragedy, I researched different possibilities in the Washington D.C. area and was completely unsuccessful. The little information found was either written in the Czech language or repeated the same information that was already common knowledge. I noticed that most of the information was factual and found it lacked emotional substance and human experience. More importantly, what about the women and children? The information about this part of the population was vague, even though some of these survivors still walked the streets of New Lidice.
