Now residing in London with her husband and two boys, she comes from a royal background – Rajput on her father’s side and Bengali on her mother’s. Cooking was always her passion and she began her food career in 2012 as a supper club in her home. In 2015, she opened a pop-up in a Soho pub to much acclaim, and Darjeeling Express the restaurant opened its doors in June 2017. It comes from the changes we are witnessing first hand—as global weather patterns continually reach new extremes and the oceans fill with plastics, we find homes flooded under nearly fifty inches of water and tangled, poisoned animals washed up on our beaches. A new crisis emerges from every direction, making the task of finding solutions daunting. Corporations are capable of large-scale impacts but prioritize profit over morality, so although the individual con- sumer is responsible only for a fraction of the environmental toll currently burdening our planet, consumers must be held accountable for imple- menting the changes they want to see. As activist and author Anna Lappé so eloquently said, “every time you spend money, you’re casting a vote for the kind of world you want” (Lappé, 2010). Change in mass consump- tion habits may be achieved through a cultural shift in the ethics of our purchases, both lowering individual impacts while effectively and directly relating a company’s environmental initiatives and commercial profits to one another. Ethical consumption is a broad subject, making it dangerously undefinable and thus uncontrollable in marketing. The very idea of a perfectly ethical consumer is impossible to achieve due to the complexity of commercial ethics—one must consider a product’s materials’ origin, workers’ treatment and wages all along the chain of production, the product’s life span post-disposal, and much more.

This paper explores the storytelling potential of direct address [otherwise known as breaking the fourth wall], by which I mean moments where fictional characters look out from their still-image world, whether picture-book, graphic novel or comic, into ours. It will consider the possibility of creating fictional worlds by employing direct address to generate narrative in the real time and space of the reader. This phenomenon is at the core of games design, where, through interactivity, real-time moving-image and sound, aim to give their audience the experience of actually being in the story itself. According to Professor of Digital Games, Tanya Krzywinska, ‘Digital games trade on putting you in a position of the “other”, on inhabiting a character’s perspective, on presenting multiple points of view.’ There are many examples like Minecraft, Skyrim, and World of Warcraft that demonstrate the storytelling prowess of digital gaming. There are games you can play, put down and return to, like Everquest, DOTA and League of Legends, known as jump-in, jump-out games. And one of the best examples is the earlier PS Vita system game, Tear-away, where the hand-held device has a back-plate and hand-roll for the players fingers, which then appear within the game transposed onto the screen along with real-time video of their face as they play.

Graphic novels, comics and manga can play an important part in encouraging reading for pleasure amongst students of any age and also have a role in teaching in many subject areas. I’m going to offer a small snapshot of the least well known of these, manga, below, but want to start with a few general points about the comic strip medium. Graphic novels, comics and manga are often seen as texts specifically for younger male reluctant readers, but such an assumption underestimates this enormously flexible medium, as it can be used to create complex works of fiction or non-fiction for adults and young adults, male and female, as well as humourous stories for the very young. The comic strip has been used to create a range of work that encompasses the superb Alice in Sunderland, by British creator Bryan Talbot, which explores memory, history and the nature of narrative, drawing on poetry, plays and novels, as well as other comics from around the world, as well as the slapstick humour of The Beano, with it’s cross-generational appeal and playful approach to language and image. It also includes television spin-offs, most notably, perhaps, The Simpsons and Futurama, which offer clever, witty takes on family, relationships and media, as well as genres that have generated spin-offs in other media, like superhero comics, themselves capable of addressing a huge range of ages and abilities.

The study was carried out independently and reflects the views of KEA alone. 2 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Establishing and running online music services is a complex task, raising both technical and legal difficulties. This is particularly the case in Europe, where complex rights licensing structures hinder the development of the market and the launch of new innovative online services. Compared to the US, Europe is lagging behind in terms of digital music revenue. Furthermore, the development of the market is fairly disparate among different countries in the European Union. This study aims to identify and analyse transaction costs in music licensing. It examines the online music markets and outlines the licensing processes faced by online services. It offers a qualitative and quantitative analysis of transaction costs in the acquisition of the relevant rights by online music services. The study also suggests different ways of decreasing transaction costs. The research focuses on three countries (the UK, Spain and the Czech Republic) and builds on data collected through a survey with online music service providers available in the three countries as well as interviews with relevant stakeholders in the field of music licensing. THE EUROPEAN ONLINE MUSIC MARKET The music industry has steadily expanded over the past few years, away from selling CDs towards selling music online or through concerts and live music.
