In this second volume we have the advantage of greater cohesion amongst the projects being undertaken, which quite easily transcend their individual case studies to become a sustained analysis of the material culture of the home. So whereas the previous volume was concerned with ethnographic studies of material culture in general, the present volume is more focused and narrower in its scope. Both books were constructed through the process described in the acknowledge- ments of the previous volume: a monthly round of drinking and gossiping (that counts for us as methodology training) followed by the discussion of a pre- circulated paper. All the contributors to this volume are currently my PhD students. There is only one overlap amongst the contributors to this and the previous volume, which I am glad to say attests to the speed with which each project has been completed. The exception represented by Alison Clarke is understandable given her achievements over the last few years including a highly successful book on Tupperware. Although I am the sole editor, all these papers were produced within a collective environment of mutual assistance and critique amongst all the contributors. Contributions from co-students present at the evening drinking sessions included Pat Berhau, Mark Mullen, Kaori O’Conner and Andrew Skuse, as well as an ex- member, Sophie Chevalier. In particular, two newcomers who are also conducting research on the topic of the home, Heather Horst on Jamaican returned migrants and Laurence Faure on establishing homes in London, have looked at many of the chapters and have made comments, as has my colleague Victor Buchli, the most recent recruit to the material culture team at UCL. Daniel Miller –xi– This page intentionally left blank Behind Closed Doors –1– Behind Closed Doors Daniel Miller In industrialized societies, most of what matters to people is happening behind the closed doors of the private sphere. The home itself has become the site of their relationships and their loneliness: the site of their broadest encounters with the world through television and the Internet, but also the place where they reflect upon and face up to themselves away from others. For this reason it is likely that people are paying increasing attention to their relationship to their own home, to its structure, its decoration, its furnishing and the arrays of objects that fill its spaces, and that they reflect back on it their agency and sometimes their impotence. It is the material culture within our home that appears as both our appropriation of the larger world and often as the representation of that world within our private domain. Yet precisely because it is a private sphere, an investigation that studies such an intimate relationship, a sharing that can only take place if we are ourselves are present inside these private homes, seems intrusive. Every chapter in this book is written on the basis of just such an experience: they are ethnographic encounters that took place behind the closed doors of domestic homes. We justified these, even where they were clearly experienced as intrusive, on the grounds that we need to understand, through empathy, the diverse ways in which this intimate relationship is being developed as the foundation to so many people’s lives. As such this is not merely ‘another book about the home’. It is a volume that attempts to change our understanding of the significance of the home as a route to social and cultural analysis and to question some assumptions about what might have been thought to be the ‘obvious’ nature and implications of the home. It does so through developing and extending certain key insights and new perspect- ives. Given the multitude of books that have already been published on the topic of houses and homes, the primary purpose of this introduction is to highlight the several ways in which this particular book is an original and distinctive contribution to the topic. The book does not aim to be comprehensive; it is complemented by many other recent works on the home, some of which also emphasize material culture. It does not, for example, provide the same attention to the development of domesticity found in some of the contributions to Cieraad (ed.) (1999), or examine the house as instrumental in the localization and appropriation of global forms as –1– Daniel Miller found in some contributions within Birdwell-Pheasant and Lawrence-Zúñiga (eds) (1999), or consider the relationship to state and private institutions found in Chapman and Hockey (1999), or emulate the social–psychological approaches that range from Csikszentmihalyi and Rochberg-Halton (1981) to Steedman (1992). Instead it concentrates on directly observing the processes by which a home and its inhabitants transform each other. The study of home life is hardly new to anthropology. Indeed it is probably its core. Typically, in the ‘classic’ period of ethnographic enquiry, supervisors would instruct their graduate students that it was essential that they live in the homes of their informants, at the heart of a community. Not surprisingly the families that hosted them often became primary informants. Indeed the problem was often that they became the gatekeepers in determining the ethnographer’s relationship to other households. So observing the intricate details of such homes was central to fieldwork. But in most of the societies deemed appropriate to ethnographic study, homes were, relatively speaking, public places. In some cases male anthropologists may have had more difficulty gaining access to female ‘quarters’ that lay at the back of the house, but there was considerable fluidity between the world of work and the home. Artisan and agrarian activities often happened within the home and family life often took place in the public domain. So the study of the home could remain integral to the holistic ambition behind the classic ethnographic study.

    Are We Legend? Reconsidering Clan in Tibet Jonathan Samuels (University of Heidelberg) 1. Introduction ibetan Studies is relatively familiar with the theme of clan. The so-called “Tibetan ancestral clans” regularly feature in T works of Tibetan historiography, and have been the subject of several studies.1 Dynastic records and genealogies, often labelled “clan histories,” have been examined, and attempts have been made to identify ancient Tibetan clan territories.2 Various ethnographic and anthropological studies have also dealt both with the concept of clan membership amongst contemporary populations and a supposed Tibetan principle of descent, according to which the “bone”- substance (rus pa), the metonym for clan, is transmitted from father to progeny.3 Can it be said, however, that we have a coherent picture of clan in Tibet, particularly from a historical perspective? The present article has two aims. Firstly, by probing the current state of our understanding, it draws attention to key unanswered questions pertaining to clans and descent, and attempts to sharpen the discussion surrounding them. Secondly, exploring new avenues of research, it considers the extent to which we may distinguish between idealised representation and social reality within relevant sections of traditional hagiographical literature. 2.     chapter x Blood and bone Recognition of kinship rests upon notions of shared substance, which are differently formulated from society to society. In this chapter, I show how Toraja conceptions of inherited substance are articulated with house mem- bership, rights of inheritance, and the ceremonial obligations which both of these involve. The images used to speak of these things are revealing of how relationships and responsibilities are thought of, and hence of ‘kinship’ as an ideology shaping the social world within which people act. Anthropological analyses of kinship have traditionally taken the system of terminology as a starting point. But the terminology of a cognatic system like that of the Toraja appears to be so simple that it can at best give only a very hazy impression of how kinship actually functions in everyday life. In practice, we find that how terms are actually used often bears little relation to genealogi- cal reality. Rather than constructing formal models derived from terminology, then, I am concerned with what Bourdieu (1977:37) has called ‘practical’ as opposed to ‘official’ kinship. Kinship provides a set of ideas that carry moral force and which are put to tactical use in daily life (Bloch 1971b). Pursuing a similarly processual line of analysis, Benjamin (2004) proposes that kinship systems be thought of as providing distinctive modes of consciousness, which mediate people’s actions in the world and shape group strategies and identities in subtle yet far-reaching ways. It has been repeatedly pointed out, too, that ‘kinship’, often essentialised in anthropology as the foundation of social organ- ization, is often difficult to separate from other forms of relatedness, an argu- ment recently re-explored by Carsten (2000).

Archaeological materials from the Wansan site (ca. 3,500-2,700 B.P.) are analyzed through examining the spatial distribution of house structures and archaeological artifacts. This dissertation explicitly utilized the House Society concept to examine how prehistoric Wansan people organized themselves and explore how and why there were differences among the houses. The House Society concept can offer archaeologists a framework to understand how the prehistoric people organized themselves, and assists us to interpret the differences of the quantity and quality of artifacts which might exist at the house/House level. In this dissertation, various archaeological implications derived from the House society concept were proposed and examined using the archaeological material excavated from the Wansan site in northeastern Taiwan. The results of this analysis illustrate that the residential houses in the Wansan society was not only a place where people resided and interacted with other members on a daily basis, but also where the lives of the living members intertwined with the ancestors through situating of deceased members around the residential houses.

    ‘The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same’: Idioms of House Society in the Leh Area (Ladakh)1 Sophie Day Introduction I had a strange sense of déjà-vu writing this essay as I found myself thinking about virtually the same issues as I had before, during and after my doctoral fieldwork in the early 1980s, along with colleagues working on the household and contemplating the impact of the by-then solid and militarised borders surrounding Ladakh. At that time, we learned that households were named property-holding units that lasted over time. We were struggling to work out the relative importance of the conjugal tie, the sibling group, the phaspun (a handful of houses joined for ritual purposes in the Leh area), legal title and state or religious dues in reproducing the corporate unit. The Buddhist smallholdings among which we were then working are known as tronpa (grong ba),2 containing one or more houses: a main or ‘big house’ (khang chen) and one or more offshoot ‘small houses’ (khangun; khang chung). The small houses held an older ‘retired’ generation and individuals who did not or could not marry, given the local ideal of just one marriage per generation per household.3 These latter residences, we were told, always reverted to the main house each generation. I worked closely with colleagues from my undergraduate days among whom Maria Phylactou (1989) contributed much to our understanding of the position of younger brothers, and Nicola Grist (1993) to commonalities among Muslim and Buddhist households across Ladakh. They asked whether siblings were now establishing independent households and whether the apparent contrasts within Ladakh that pitted Buddhist non- division against Muslim practices of household division, fuelling in turn a highly charged politics relating to intermarriage and population growth, had any empirical foundation.
