A Principal St. Joseph’s College for Women, Tirupur 641 604, Tamilnadu, India I congratulate and appreciate the faculty, staff and students of English Department, St. Joseph’s College for Women, Kangeyam Road, Tirupur for organizing a two-day International Conference Reading the Nation – The Global Perspective on August 3rd and 4th, 2018. This book is a compilation of select papers presented in the conference. The basic purpose of any conference is to bring out the findings of the researchers in the form of papers on a theme to provide a platform for further discussions and to extend the knowledge among the participants. In keeping with our mission to nurture intellectual curiosity and to develop a holistic personality, our college is devoted to equip the students and staff with knowledge and attitude that continuously improve and help them to face the challenges. I am sure the participants of the International Conference have gained extensive knowledge. On behalf of the college, I wish the organizing committee and participants Best wishes and God’s Blessings. i Editor’s Note Department of English, St. Joseph’s College for Women, Tirupur conducted a two-day International Conference focusing on the theme Reading the Nation – The Global Perspective on August 3rd and 4th, 2018. This special issue of the International journal Language in India www.languageinindia.com includes select papers presented by faculty members, research scholars and students from various colleges and universities. Education without innovative research and development is meaningless for the community. We are intertwined globally, and contribution to global knowledge is the call of the day. The papers presented in the conference focused on a variety of topics including Caste and Nation in Indian Society, Expatriate Immigrants quandary, Men and Women relationship, Nationalism and Post-colonial Literature, Racism, Parent-adolescent Interconnection in Modern India, and so on. Thus, the papers presented the confluence of divergent ideas on the construction of nation. We believe that such discussion carried on by the Faculty, Research Scholars and Students would help us in the process of nation building. In addition, this would also help the researchers to fine tune their research skills and expand their intellectual horizons. The Department of English in St. Joseph’s College for Women, Tirupur is focused on regional, national and international literatures communicated through the medium of English language. For Better or for Worse: The Impact of Sponsorship on the Equality Rights of Immigrant Women (2001) (246 pages) Funded by the Status of Women Canada’s Policy Research Fund and the Joint Centre of Excellence for Research on Immigration and Settlement (CERIS) in Toronto. The report criticizes the detrimental effects of the “sponsorship regime,” defined as the constellation of various laws, regulations and guidelines from the federal and provincial governments defining sponsorship, the obligations of sponsored persons and their sponsors.” It discusses misunderstandings of sponsorship, integration barriers, and spousal maltreatment, and concludes that sponsorship “poses the question of the responsibility of the family to ensure the well-being and the socio-economic security of its members in relation to the state.” The report finds that given “the fact that sponsorship involves the undertaking of responsibility for women by the spouse, the fact that the application for permanent residence may be refused if the spouse withdraws his sponsorship and the fact that the access of sponsored women to social assistance is limited by provincial regulations (and remains so for the entire duration of the sponsorship, even after citizenship has been obtained), mean that the equality rights of women immigrants are being violated. More relevant for us are the family—immediate and extended—with its hold over loyalties of its members, a deeply hierarchic society stratified by caste and class, and persistent conflicts over religion, language, ethnicity and other differences. Studied here are two novels, both translated from Malayalam-one 4“Fire, Mv Witness” called ‘Agnisakshi in Malayalam, written by Lalithambika Antharjanam, and ‘The Scent of the Other Side’ called Othappu’ in Malayalam, written by Sarah Joseph. The first one was published in 1975 and the second one in 2005. This paper traces the trajectory of feminist ideals over the span of 35 years and concludes that women have always tried to grapple with the question of women’s subjectivity and agency. They have been victims of patriarchal systems and are partial collaborators. Women sometimes wear the marks of their subordination and their inferiority with pride. Devaki in Fire, My Witness and Margalitha in The Scent of the Other Side are the two characters studied to work out a conclusion. The Indian woman has indeed achieved success in half a century of independence, but if there is to be a truly female empowerment, much remains to be done.

Distinguishing Theonomy from Theonomists One of the most difficult aspects of polemical theology is being sure that what is being evaluated is a distinctive viewpoint, not the individuals holding the viewpoint. Of necessity, when evaluating a given view, one examines those dimensions that distinguish it from other views. It would inevitably be lopsided, then, to confuse a criticism of a view with a criticism of those who hold it. Presumably, those who hold a distinctive view also embrace many other views that are identical with those shared by the church catholic. Individual Theonomists are not intended to be the point of an examination such as this; rather, what is evaluated is the viewpoint that distinguishes Theonomy from other approaches to biblical ethics. 2. Distinguishing Theonomy from Christian Reconstruction As socioreligious phenomena, Theonomy and Christian Reconstruction are closely related. The individuals involved in the one are ordinarily involved in the other. However, theologically and religiously they can be distinguished. Christian Reconstructionists exist in a variety of forms, and are ordinarily united in their belief that the Western world, and especially the United States, has departed from the Judeo-Christian ethical basis that once characterized its public discourse, with devastating results. Positively, Reconstructionists wish to see the United States return to a more biblical approach, or even a more Judeo-Christian approach, to the issues of civil life. Theonomy is more specific than this, though it does not disagree with it.

    THEONOMY AND ESCHATOLOGY | Some Reflections On Postmillennialism By Richard B. Gaffin, Jr.1 Essential to the emergence of theonomy/(Christian) reconstructionism has been a revival of postmillennialism.2 Among current postmils, to be sure, there are some who are not recon- structionists, but all reconstructionists—whatever their differences—consider themselves post- mils. Or so it would have seemed until just recently with the unanticipated and apparently grow- ing impact of reconstructionist viewpoints in circles whose eschatology is characteristically premil. Still, for reconstructionism’s leading advocates, postmillennialism is plainly integral— whether logically or psychologically—to their position as a whole. Nonreconstructionist postmils would naturally deny any such connection. This chapter provides some partial, personally-tinged, yet, I hope, not entirely unhelpful reflections on the resurgent postmillennialism of the past 20-25 years. My reservations lie in at least four areas. DEFINING POSTMILLENNIALISM A large element of ambiguity cuts across much of today’s postmillennialism. Before trying to specify that ambiguity it will be helpful, historically, to give some attention to the fact that in the past, too, postmillennialism has not been the clearly defined, unambiguous position that some of its contemporary proponents make it out to be. It is fairly common to point out the inadequacy of our conventional designations pre, post, and a. But, no less commonly, in ensuing discussion that recognition recedes. As a result, efforts, for one, to distinguish between the postmil and amil positions get confused—usually, as it turns out, more than a merely terminological confusion. Who coined the term amillennial and when did it first begin to be used? Perhaps I’ve missed it somewhere, but the usual sources don’t seem to know or at least don’t say.

    Are We Legend? Reconsidering Clan in Tibet Jonathan Samuels (University of Heidelberg) 1. Introduction ibetan Studies is relatively familiar with the theme of clan. The so-called “Tibetan ancestral clans” regularly feature in T works of Tibetan historiography, and have been the subject of several studies.1 Dynastic records and genealogies, often labelled “clan histories,” have been examined, and attempts have been made to identify ancient Tibetan clan territories.2 Various ethnographic and anthropological studies have also dealt both with the concept of clan membership amongst contemporary populations and a supposed Tibetan principle of descent, according to which the “bone”- substance (rus pa), the metonym for clan, is transmitted from father to progeny.3 Can it be said, however, that we have a coherent picture of clan in Tibet, particularly from a historical perspective? The present article has two aims. Firstly, by probing the current state of our understanding, it draws attention to key unanswered questions pertaining to clans and descent, and attempts to sharpen the discussion surrounding them. Secondly, exploring new avenues of research, it considers the extent to which we may distinguish between idealised representation and social reality within relevant sections of traditional hagiographical literature. 2.
