Distinguishing Theonomy from Theonomists One of the most difficult aspects of polemical theology is being sure that what is being evaluated is a distinctive viewpoint, not the individuals holding the viewpoint. Of necessity, when evaluating a given view, one examines those dimensions that distinguish it from other views. It would inevitably be lopsided, then, to confuse a criticism of a view with a criticism of those who hold it. Presumably, those who hold a distinctive view also embrace many other views that are identical with those shared by the church catholic. Individual Theonomists are not intended to be the point of an examination such as this; rather, what is evaluated is the viewpoint that distinguishes Theonomy from other approaches to biblical ethics. 2. Distinguishing Theonomy from Christian Reconstruction As socioreligious phenomena, Theonomy and Christian Reconstruction are closely related. The individuals involved in the one are ordinarily involved in the other. However, theologically and religiously they can be distinguished. Christian Reconstructionists exist in a variety of forms, and are ordinarily united in their belief that the Western world, and especially the United States, has departed from the Judeo-Christian ethical basis that once characterized its public discourse, with devastating results. Positively, Reconstructionists wish to see the United States return to a more biblical approach, or even a more Judeo-Christian approach, to the issues of civil life. Theonomy is more specific than this, though it does not disagree with it. -

Ice Pastor Oak Hill Bible Church, Austin, Texas Today Christians are witnessing "the most rapid cultural re alignment in history."1 One Christian writer describes the last 25 years as "The Great Rebellion," which has resulted in a whole new culture replacing the more traditional Christian-influenced Ameri can culture.2 Is the light flickering and about to go out? Is this a part of the further development of the apostasy that many premillenni- alists say is taught in the Bible? THEONOMY AND ESCHATOLOGY | Some Reflections On Postmillennialism By Richard B. Gaffin, Jr.1 Essential to the emergence of theonomy/(Christian) reconstructionism has been a revival of postmillennialism.2 Among current postmils, to be sure, there are some who are not recon- structionists, but all reconstructionists—whatever their differences—consider themselves post- mils. Or so it would have seemed until just recently with the unanticipated and apparently grow- ing impact of reconstructionist viewpoints in circles whose eschatology is characteristically premil. Still, for reconstructionism’s leading advocates, postmillennialism is plainly integral— whether logically or psychologically—to their position as a whole. Nonreconstructionist postmils would naturally deny any such connection. This chapter provides some partial, personally-tinged, yet, I hope, not entirely unhelpful reflections on the resurgent postmillennialism of the past 20-25 years. My reservations lie in at least four areas. DEFINING POSTMILLENNIALISM A large element of ambiguity cuts across much of today’s postmillennialism. Before trying to specify that ambiguity it will be helpful, historically, to give some attention to the fact that in the past, too, postmillennialism has not been the clearly defined, unambiguous position that some of its contemporary proponents make it out to be. It is fairly common to point out the inadequacy of our conventional designations pre, post, and a. But, no less commonly, in ensuing discussion that recognition recedes. As a result, efforts, for one, to distinguish between the postmil and amil positions get confused—usually, as it turns out, more than a merely terminological confusion. Who coined the term amillennial and when did it first begin to be used? Perhaps I’ve missed it somewhere, but the usual sources don’t seem to know or at least don’t say. -

However, the thesis posits that instead of addressing the particulars of a political question as a rationale for action, Christians should instead be asking questions about the best way to represent our beliefs in secular society, and whether the use of the coercive tool of secular legislation is the ethically proper way to go in light of our beliefs as Christians. -

HOW SHOULD THE OLD TESTAMENT CIVIL LAWS APPLY TODAY? Joe M Sprinklet I. INTRODUCTION What is the role of the Mosaic civil laws today under the new covenant? There have been a number of Christian approaches to this question: the Reformed approach, dispensational approaches, the approach of theonomy (Christian Reconstructionism), and finally the principalizing approach. Each will be discussed in turn. II. THE APPROACH OF REFORMED THEOLOGY TO THE LAW The first approach to the law, an approach that remains influential, is that of Reformed theology. A. The Approach of Reformed Theology to the Law Defined Reformed theology's approach to the law is spelled out in the Westminster Confession of Faith (A.D. 1646) in Chapter XIX "Of the Law of God."' This approach begins by dividing the laws into three categories: moral, ceremonial, and civil. The moral law refers to the broad moral principles of the law, especially as expressed in the Decalogue (Ten Commandments). -

WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT THE PCA Tim Keller June, 2010 My first General Assembly was the PCA’s third, held in Jackson, Mississippi just under thirty-five years ago. Ever since then, I’ve seen a lot of conflict in our communion. My friends in other denominations ask, ‘isn’t there something inherently wrong with a denomination that is filled with such tensions?’ Now church fights are always fueled in part by ego and spiritual immaturity, and we must all share responsibility for that. But I propose that these struggles are also a sign of something good, even uniquely good, about our denomination. I believe our conflicts lie in that we are one of the few Presbyterian denominations that hasn’t pruned of one or more of its historic branches. Within the Reformed churches, there has always been a tension between what George Marsden calls ‘the Reformed branches’--the doctrinalist, pietistic and culturalist impulses.1 (Please read this footnote.) To understand the PCA today, we must trace out the history of these branches in American Presbyterianism. Spiritual revival and the ‘sides’ of Presbyterianism Reformed Christianity puts a high value on the objective—on theological soundness and creedal subscription. But it has also historically given a lot of attention to the subjective. Reformed soteriology holds that salvation is not a human product—it is God’s work. Although the movement claims no specific founder or central leader, most observers trace its original concepts to Rousas John Rushdoony, a California university professor who authored what has for many become the group's major working document, The Institutes of Biblical Law. Called by some "Theonomy" and by others "Dominion Theology," Reconstructionism is distinguished by the following beliefs: 1.Regeneration as humankind's only hope in both this age and the age to come, since social change must follow personal change, and personal change can only come through regeneration. -

Biblical Interpretation of Gary North’s Theonomy CLIVE BEED & CARA BEED ABSTRACT: Theonomy is the idea that the Mosaic Law should be practiced in modern societies. Theonomists reject the more usual belief that the civil and ceremonial laws of the Mosaic Law are no longer applicable. This approach to Christian economics has received little critical scrutiny, despite a volume of work by its main protagonist, Gary North. Reasons for its relative neglect appear to emanate both from within theonomy itself, and from Christian economics. This paper assesses the nature of biblical interpretation used within theonomy, illustrated in Gary North’s mammoth economic commentary on the book of Exodus. How North interprets matters of lending and interest in Exodus is the focus. His commentary extends far and wide beyond Exodus, even to Jesus. Some of these excursions are investigated here, including the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy, and Jesus too, whose instruction on lending and interest is compared to North’s interpretations. Since Jesus had so much to say on these matters, the second-to-last section consid- ers how Jesus’ teaching on lending and interest is being practiced in the advanced capitalist economy and what scope may exist for its extension. With some caveats noted, North’s interpretations in Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy are substantially different from most biblical exegetes. His readings of Jesus, moreover, do not sit comfortably with most of them. KEYWORDS: biblical interpretation, theonomy, Exodus, Jesus, contemporary practice INTRODUCTION enormous, but barely cited. The Life of Dr. Robert L. Thomas
TMSJ 10/1 (Spring 1999) 3-7 THE LIFE OF DR. ROBERT L. THOMAS Robert L. Thomas, Jr., M.Div. Senior Pastor Christ Church Lake Forest, IL Robert Lewis Thomas was born on June 4, 1928 at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the third of four children born to Thelma Hopkins Thomas and Frank Garret Thomas. They were of Welsh descent, and raised their children Frances, Frank, Robert, and Ruth in Decatur, Georgia while living in the same house for 22 years. Dr. Thomas grew up enjoying all sports – particularly basketball. Neighborhood boys formed a team called the Hampton Lane Celtics, named for the alley behind their house. He was known for his speed and given the nickname “Rabbit,” which some friends and family still call him today. He attended Decatur Boys’ High School (1941-1945) and participated on the school basket- ball team, which was runner up in Georgia during his junior year. His other interests in high school included R.O.T.C. where he served as Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel. Upon graduation from high school, Dr. Thomas enrolled in Georgia Institute of Technology where in 1949 he received his B.M.E. While in college, he became Lieutenant Colonel, Commanding Officer of the Ordnance Corps which placed him on call as an officer in the Army. Upon completion of his college degree, Dr. Thomas moved to Chicago, Illinois where he worked at the Wilson meat packing plant while attending Moody Bible Institute evening school. In 1950, he was called into active duty in the Army and served as a First Lieutenant in Korea and in Japan.
