Go to the station and READ ALL DIRECTIONS for that station, take any worksheets you may need and write you Name, Date, Period, and Page Number. After the activity is completed, answer the guiding question on the GQ Sheet. You will check in with your teacher, then check off the boxes as you complete the activity on this sheet, and also check off your progress on the class spreadsheet. MIDDENS  ACTIVITY:  Take a worksheet and read about Middens  On your Vocabulary Sheet, write the definition for “middens”.  Study the trash objects found on the cardstock sheet located in this folder and answer the questions on the worksheet labeled “Midden Questions.” When you are finished, put the cardstock sheet back in the folder. DO NOT WRITE ON IT!  GUIDING QUESTION:  What are middens and what do they help us learn about people and societies?  Answer the Guiding Question on the GQ Handout. Write 2-3 complete sentences, restating the question in the answer.  CHECK IN/CHECK OFF PROGRESS STRATA  ACTIVITY:  Take a worksheet and read “What is Stratigraphy?”  On your Vocabulary Sheet, write the definition for “strata”.  Read the story on the manila envelopes about Stratigraphy and pull down the paper inside after each time that you see a (*) in the story. Each part of the story tells you that a layer of soil was added over time. Pull down the paper until you can see a line where the soil should end.  Complete the worksheet on the back titled “Introduction to Strata”. Read the directions carefully.  GUIDING QUESTION:  How does stratigraphy help archaeologists to determine the age of artifacts found at a dig site?  Answer the Guiding Question on the GQ Handout. Write 2-3 complete sentences, restating the question in the answer.  CHECK IN/CHECK OFF PROGRESS LOCATION  ACTIVITY:  Take a worksheet and read about “Location! Location! Location!”  Based on your observations of the pictures on the worksheet, make your best inferences about the people who might have lived in these places. Answer the questions on the worksheet labeled “Location, Location, Location!”  GUIDING QUESTION:  Why is the location of an artifact so important to archaeologists?  Answer the Guiding Question on the GQ Handout. Write 2-3 complete sentences, restating the question in the answer.  CHECK IN/CHECK OFF PROGRESS BOOTS  ACTIVITY:  Get a group of 3-4 people together for this station, and then ask for a shoe.  Read the directions on the worksheet.  Use your observation and inference skills with the shoe and follow the directions on the worksheet.  When you are finished, give the shoe back.  GUIDING QUESTION:  Without archaeologists would historians be able to write history? Explain your answer.  Answer the Guiding Question on the GQ Handout. Write 2-3 complete sentences, restating the question in the answer.  CHECK IN/CHECK OFF PROGRESS
