EUROPEAN COMMISSION

PRESS RELEASE

Brussels, 2 June 2014

60 universities receive 'European Master's in Translation' Label

The European Commission has announced the list of universities selected for its 'European Master's in Translation' (EMT) Label. More than 60 institutions in 21 Member States will receive the Label, which recognises the best Master's degree courses for translators. The main goal of the EMT is to improve translator training and to attract top quality translators to the European institutions. Universities receiving the Commission's seal of approval are entitled to join the EMT network for the next five years and receive funding for lecturers to attend its annual conference and seminars. "The European Master's in Translation is the reference for quality in translator training," commented Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth. "It acts as a hub for good practice and cooperation with universities and the language industry. High-quality training in higher education is the basis for the translation services provided by the European institutions." The EMT promotes the exchange of best practices between universities, enhanced teaching standards, a curriculum that takes account of market needs to improve employability of graduates and the creation of a truly European job market for skilled translators. The Commission received a total of 114 applications from 25 Member States and 3 non-EU countries for the EMT Label. The proposals were assessed against a strict set of criteria by academic experts. They selected study programmes from 62 universities in 21 Member States and two programmes from a non-EU country (Switzerland) received observer status. The number of applications reflects the rising popularity of the project among universities. There were 93 applications (54 selected) under the previous call in 2010. The next call for applications is scheduled at the end of 2019.

Background The EMT is a partnership project between the European Commission and higher-education institutions offering Master's level translation programmes. It was set up in 2009 at the initiative of the Commission's Directorate-General for Translation in response to a growing shortage of properly qualified translators in the job market. The EMT quality label is awarded to university translation programmes that meet agreed professional standards and market demands. EMT is a registered EU trademark, which universities in the EMT network are entitled to use. As well as promoting the exchange of best practices between universities, the EMT network will foster contacts with partners in the language industry, to organise work placements for EMT students and increase their employability by ensuring that the skills taught match those demanded by the language industry.

IP/14/625 The call to join the EMT network was open to all higher education institutions offering translation programmes at Master's level in the EU and some non-EU countries (EU candidate and potential candidate countries, countries participating in the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP); the countries of the European Economic Area (EEA), Russia and Switzerland. Former EMT members had to apply as well. All members and observers will be invited to a first meeting of the new EMT network in Brussels on 17 September.
