Maureen Flanagan Fund Scholarship Application Supports student opportunities that go “above and beyond the college experience.” Opportunities can be unpaid or under-paid summer internships, research, study abroad, alternative Spring breaks, community service, or other initiatives that complement and enhance the student’s chosen course of study. Prepare a 1-page proposal describing initiative, how it supports your field of study, and estimated costs. Preference is given to undergraduate women with demonstrated financial need. FAFSA submission required. Average award: $3800 total, but varies with number of recipients and strength of proposals. Deadline to apply: March 31. (Applications accepted starting January 1).
Life Members Internship Scholarship Awards Application Supports undergraduate students pursuing an unpaid summer internship. Applicants must have already applied to an unpaid internship opportunity for the summer. Must be a first year, sophomore or junior, with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Award: $2000 stipends, awarded to 3 students. Deadline to apply: End of January.
Frank and Helen DiGiammarino Scholarship Fund Application Supports Commonwealth Honors College students planning to pursue an intensive community engaged learning or research experience over the summer or during the academic year. Eligible experiences include community service learning internships, community-engaged research, or other projects that demonstrate value to a community and learning experience for the applicant. Must be a CHC student with a minimum GPA of 3.4 and be working on a faculty supervised community-based research project. Award: Up to a $2000 stipends, awarded to 3 students. (Varies with endowment). Deadline to apply: End of February.
SBS Internship Award Application Supports SBS students who will complete unpaid internships in intersession or the Spring semester. Candidates must be in good academic standing with at least 45 credits. Preference will be given to students with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and those with financial need. Evidence of internship placement is required. Average award: Approximately 5-10 awards of up to $2,000 will be made in the Fall. Deadline to apply: Mid-November for Spring internships; End of March for Summer or Fall internships
Scott J. Bacherman Internship Award Application Provides scholarships for students taking unpaid internships in the field of broadcasting, media convergence or affiliated fields during the summer or following Fall semester. Eligible students will have majors in Journalism, Communication or BDIC, or be actively involved in WMUA, WFCR, UVC-TV19, The Daily Collegian or other campus media and entertainment organizations. Evidence of internship placement is required. Must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated financial need from FAFSA filed with Financial Aid office. Average award: Two or three awards of up to $2,000 Deadline to apply: End of March for summer or Fall internships Northampton Radio Group Internship and Award Application Provides a scholarship of up to $4500 to support a student taking a full-time (40 hours per week) 10-week internship at Northampton Radio Group during the summer. This award is open to all full-time UMass students, but seniors graduating before Summer are not eligible to apply. Award: One scholarship of up to $4,500 will be awarded in the Spring. Deadline to apply: End of March for summer internship
The Thomas Family Scholarship Application Supports a Journalism major with an unpaid or underpaid internship in the field of emergent media. Examples of emergent media include websites, blogs, social media, etc. Must have a 3.0 minimum GPA and financial need. Award criteria include type of new media internship, financial need, and academic excellence. Average award: Total of $1,400 is given annually Deadline to apply: Late March
The Dandley Internship Awards Application Supports two Journalism majors who have unpaid internships during the upcoming summer or academic year. Must have 3.0 minimum GPA and financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office. Preference given to students in UMass ROTC or the military. Preference given for internships that demonstrate the critical importance of journalism in a democracy. Average award: Two awards of $5000 per student Deadline to apply: Late March
Elaine E. Nord Internship Fund for Creative Communications Application Supports a Communication major doing a summer internship in the field of mass communication. Must have 3.0 minimum GPA and be enrolled for summer internship practicum credits. Must provide a 300-word essay on proposed internship and how it connects with your professional goals. Must provide a current resume, and evidence of the summer internship offer. Preference given to students whose work will focus on the use of technology to create media content, documentary, or other forms of video production, or will focus on the field of photography. Average award: $1000 to one student per year Deadline to apply: Mid April
Ward McCarthy Scholarship for Interns Application Supports an Economics student with a confirmed internship during the calendar year. Preference is given to students with unpaid internships. Average award: Total of $2,500 is given annually Deadline to apply: TBA
Jerome M. Mileur Internship Fund Application Supports a Political Science major pursuing an internship in Washington DC, especially with elected officials or political parties. Preference given to students who have secured a DC internship. Average award: Total of $500-$1500 is awarded to one or two students Deadline to apply: Mid February
Shep Shepard Award Application Supports a Political Science senior pursuing an internship, community service, public service, or student club activity. Average award: $500 Deadline to apply: Mid February
Edwin A. Gere, Jr. Scholarship Application Supports 1 or 2 Political Science majors pursuing an internship abroad, in order to learn about state and local governments in other countries. Must demonstrate an academic and professional interest in state and local government and politics Average award: Total of $500-$1100 awarded to one or two students Deadline to apply: Mid February
Merriam Internship Award Application Supports students taking unpaid summer or semester-long internships in public policy, law, ecological conservation, and/or real estate development. Preference will be given to juniors who have financial need as determined by the UMass Amherst Financial Aid Office. Candidates must be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. Evidence of internship placement is required. Please note: seniors graduating in Spring are not eligible to apply. Average award: Two awards of up to $1,500 will be made in the Spring. Deadline to apply: End of March for Summer or Fall internships
Kathyrn F. Furcolo Awards Recognizes students who participated in an unpaid internship in public service or government, and who demonstrate outstanding service to the community. Applications are submitted after students have completed their internships. All majors eligible, but application is by invitation only. Career Services will contact eligible students in early March to apply. Award: $2100 divided by number of winners. Deadline to apply: Late March.
Jane Adams Sociology in Practice Award Application Recognizes a Sociology major for accomplishments that can include a current or completed internship. Must submit a 1-2 page essay. Average award: $100 and a certificate of recognition Deadline to apply: TBD
Sara Lennox Scholarship Fund Application Supports two STPEC majors with previous, current, or future plans for activism and community service. This can include internships. Must have completed or be currently enrolled in STPEC 391H. Must be in good academic standing. Must submit a 3-5 page essay, that does not show your name, for blind review by STPEC staff and student staff. Average award: $1000 awarded to each of two students Deadline to apply: Early March
STPEC Summer Springfield Internship Scholarships Application Supports 2 STPEC majors pursuing unpaid summer internships with organizations in the Springfield area that address local social justice issues at the grass roots level. Average award: TBD. Two student awards Deadline to apply: Late March
Evans Family Scholarship for Environmental Conservation Application Recognizes exemplary work on any aspect of the environment, completed as part of the student’s studies. All areas of study – including internships -- are eligible and may range, for example, from a painting or photograph, to poetry, policy or business models, or research into the changing migration of butterflies. Must be a second-semester junior in good standing, with a minimum GPA of 3.7. All such students are eligible, but preference will be given to students in the Commonwealth Honors College. A letter of recommendation from a faculty member is required. Award: $1000 applied to senior year tuition. Deadline to apply: End of February.

BDIC Scholarship and Research Award Application Supports BDIC majors (Bachelor’s Degree Independent Concentration) pursuing independent research, and internship, or an honors capstone project. Travelbird Scholarship Application Supports students pursuing internships abroad. Creatively answer a question about travel and you can win 3000 Euros (roughly $3350) and a 3 to 6 month internship at Travelbird HQ in Amsterdam. Open to all UMass Amherst undergraduate students. Award: Roughly $3350 stipend, and Travelbird internship if desired. Deadline to apply: End of May.
