Native American Myths and Legends (continued) Finish myth-search (turn in worksheets) Quiz over Native American myths and legends Writing myths- myth must attempt to answer a big life question (something that is hard to explain) (narrative writing assignment)
Unit 2: Intro to Puritans Early Explorers and Colonists (Narrative Accounts) Christopher Columbus “Journal of the First American Voyage” o Quiz John Smith “The General History of Virginia” o Paraphrase William Bradford and the Puritans “Of Plymouth Plantation” o Author background notes/ Puritan notes o Reading Preparation (notes and outline over selection) Probably do either Smith or Bradford for general (both for CP—one independent) DO a quiz over material
UNIT 3: Research Week 1 (Or Research a modern-day scandal) Research Project (Puritanism and Salem Witchcraft Trials) Citing Internet Sources Source Cards and Note Cards In-text citations Works Cited Page Begin internet research Research Project (Puritanism and Salem Witchcraft Trials) Work on research paper format and thesis statements. Continue work on research papers One-on-one meetings with students to check progress Finish research project and hand in paper

Unit 5: Romanticism Romantics o Day 1:Notes over Washington Irving and Romanticism w/ guided notes (1/2 day) o Begin reading “The Devil and Tom Walker” p. 242 o Day 2: Finish reading “The Devil and Tom Walker” o Day 3: Begin Short Story Analysis o Day 4: Finish Short Story Analysis and go over (turn in) o Day 5: Test over Irving notes and “The Devil and Tom Walker” (trade and grade?)
Romantics continued/ Poe o Notes over Poe o “The Fall of the House of Usher” p. 308 o Go over vocabulary terms and how to break apart complex sentences to determine meaning (might want to pick a few sentences from the story and have students determine the central idea—paraphrase—for practice) o Have students answer book questions at the end of the story and then go over. o Reading and answering questions will take about 2- 2 ½ days in class. o “The Fall of the House of Usher” Review (collect as test grade)
