POSITION Four to Six hourly Fuels Crew Technician positions are available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) for the summer 2014 field season to support fuels reduction projects as part of the U.S. Army’s Forestry Program at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
ORGANIZATION CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

LOCATION Work will be based at Fort Wainwright though travel is required to Yukon, Tanana Flats, and Donnelly training areas in Alaska. Fort Wainwright is located near Fairbanks, Alaska, and encompasses over 1.5 million acres of military training lands, including a main post area of 13,000 acres. Approximately 15,000 people live and work at Fort Wainwright. Fairbanks is the second largest city in Alaska by population, providing city life as well as access to fishing, hunting, native crafts, dog mushing, snowmobiling, skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and views of the Alaskan Northern Lights. http://www.fairbankschamber.org/
RESPONSIBILITIES The successful candidates will be members of a field crew that will conduct training area improvement and wildfire mitigation projects on military lands in Alaska. Work will include forest thinning, performing fire mitigation activities to include creating firebreaks, removing hazardous trees, clearing potentially hazardous vegetation around high-ignition sources using chainsaws, brush cutters and hand tools, and other duties as assigned. Participation in prescribed fires with cooperation of multiple agencies may be required. Some Personal Protective Equipment will be provided (includes gloves, eye and ear protection, hard hats). Supervision of project work may be required after receiving initial training.
LIVING CONDITIONS AND TRANSPORTATION The successful candidates must provide their own housing and means of transportation to work. Orientation and training will be provided at the beginning of the summer to prepare seasonal personnel for the field season (i.e., bear, chainsaw, first aid/CPR, unexploded ordinance, and all-terrain vehicle safety). Transportation will be provided within the Army lands and while on travel status. Per-diem is provided while on travel status. Communal camping equipment will be issued to the crew (i.e., tents, stoves, pots, tarps etc.) during work assignments.
DURATION AND WORK HOURS These positions are approximately 6 months and are contingent on funding, starting late April 201 and ending late September 2013 (flexible on start and end dates). Employees will be required to work up to eight consecutive 10-hour days based out of remote field camps, and overtime is limited.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS The ability to work in remote locations performing arduous and physically demanding work for extended periods of time and the ability to work in diverse environmental conditions (i.e., rain, mosquitoes, snow, wind, extreme weather conditions, etc.) are required.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience or education in forestry, wildfire management, natural resources, wildlife biology, recreation management, or similar discipline is desired. An understanding or desire to learn about forestry and wildfire management techniques in a boreal forest ecosystem and a basic understanding or desire to learn Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers and data collection is preferred. Experience with running and maintaining a chainsaw and experience with topographic maps and aerial photo interpretation are desired. Preference will be given to applicants who have already obtained a red card (FFT2) and completed S-212 (Chainsaw Training) prior to the start date. Crew members will be expected to have a pair of National Fire Protection Association certified work boots for chainsaw work.

SALARY Wages are $15.00 to $20.00/hour; pay rate is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Continuation of the position is dependent on the receipt of funding from the sponsor for fuels crew technician efforts at Fort Wainwright.
