Introduction Background and Research Question As many scholars in the political field point out, it has become en vogue to suggest that globalization entails the gradual or eventual dissolution of the traditional nation-state. During the past few decades, the forces of globalization have undoubtedly shifted the role of traditional boundaries of values, institutions, and governance towards uncharted directions. Recently, there have been continual rebellions and upheavals, known as the Arab Spring, against the oppressive regimes in Egypt, Tunisia, Lybia, Yemen, and Syria. At the same time, many nations such as China and Saudi Arabia have opened up to international trade to increase their economic growth and investment to appease the public for their repressive measures. More and more societies, groups, and people are able to express their voices through technology, social networks, and demonstrations, which diminish the role of the values, institutions, and governance established by the state.

The Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies Working Paper Series The Suryong System as a Collectivist Developmental Strategy by Young Chul Chung Paper No. 02-05 October 2005 The Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies 170 Uris Hall Cornell University t. 607-255-6370 f. 607-254-5000 [email protected] www.einaudi.cornell.edu The Suryong System as a Collectivist Developmental Strategy by Young Chul Chung Abstract Many Western studies, seeing North Korea through the prism framed by the Cold War, depicts it as one or some combination of three images: a satellite of the Soviet Union, a totalitarian regime, or a feudal dynasty. This paper argues in contrast that it is best to explain North Korea’s political institution centered around Suryong as a product of the collective choice to pursue the often contradictory dual goals of building a “socialist utopia” and achieving economic development. In pursuit of these goals, the Korean Workers’ Party (KWP) has adopted a collectivist developmental strategy that places a premium on collective efforts and non-material incentives. Several problems arose in the process of implementation, and particularly serious were the challenges of de-Stalinism from outside and dogmatism from within as well as individualism among the public. The KWP responded with political projects: to solidify the Party and strengthen its unity with the public while privileging ideological incentives over material rewards. The series of choices has led to the establishment of the Suryong system where Kim Il-Sung occupies the central position of power around which the Party and mass are organized.

S/N Korean Humanities, Volume 5 Issue 2 (September 2019) https://doi.org/10.17783/IHU.2019.5.2.59 pp.59~86∣ISSN 2384-0668 / E-ISSN 2384-0692 ⓒ 2019 IHU S/N Korean Humanities Volume5 Issue2 Hapkak and Curtain Wall: Imaginaries of Tradition and Technology in the Three * Kims’ North Korean Modern Architecture Jelena Prokopljević2) International University of Catalonia/Pompeu Fabra University Abstract The architecture developed in North Korea since its foundation in 1948 but especially since the proclamation of the Juche thought as the unique state ideology in the early 1960s, has included two major referential imaginaries: the Korean traditional architecture and the expression of the economic and technological progress. The presence of these imaginaries, mediated by the architectural language but also by the production policies, have oscillated throughout decades with varying intensity under the rule of each of the three Kims. The paper analyses different elements of traditionally and technologically inspired architecture, resumed in the title in two significative elements, the hapkak roof and the glass curtain wall, and looks into their transformation and modern interpretation in different times. The aim is to link the dominance of either of those imaginaries with the epoch and political discourses of Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il and Kim Jong Un, as tools for establishing the periodicity of contemporary North Korean architecture despite the omnipresent discourse of the national character of North Korean architecture. All three leaders have had strong influence on the architectural creation, understood as regimes’ most valuable propaganda device and have preferred one over another imaginary.

HISTORY OF REVOLUTIONARY ACTIVITIES OF CHAIRMAN KIM JONG IL PYONGYANG, KOREA JUCHE 104 (2015) HISTORY OF REVOLUTIONARY ACTIVITIES OF CHAIRMAN KIM JONG IL Foreign Languages Publishing House Pyongyang, Korea Juche 104 (2015) 1 PREFACE Kim Jong Il, who led the cause of the Juche revolution pioneered by Kim Il Sung along the road resplendent with victory, is the eternal General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea and the eternal Chairman of the National Defence Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Already in the 1960s he started administering unique Songun-based revolutionary leadership, Songun politics, and in the mid-1970s he began to lead the overall affairs of the Workers’ Party of Korea, the Korean People’s Army and the state, thus bringing about a radical turn in all the sectors of the revolution and construction and ushering in a heyday of the era of the WPK under the banner of modelling the whole society on Kimilsungism. After the death of Kim Il Sung in the mid-1990s, he formulated the mode of Songun politics in a comprehensive way. By so doing, he frustrated the ever-more undisguised schemes of the US-led allied imperialist forces to isolate and stifle the DPRK, defended his socialist country reliably and opened a new era of building a thriving socialist country. Cherishing an ennobling sense of obligation to the destiny of his country and fellow people and the future of the Korean revolution, he provided a brilliant solution to the problem of inheriting leadership, the core in accomplishing the revolutionary cause.

  • Women and Social Change in South and North Korea: Marxist And
Abstract Studies on the position of women in society disagree concerning the type of social system most conducive to the emancipation of women. The socialist system of North Korea and the capitalist system of South Korea are ideal laboratories in which to examine the Western liberal modernization perspective and the Marxist perspective in an empirical context. This paper analyzes how different patterns of social change have affected Korean women's position by comparing the status of Women and women in North and South Korea. Social Change in South and North Neither the socialist revolution in North Korea nor the rapid Korea: modernization in South Korea by themselves served to liberate women, although state interference in North Korea in favor of women, especially, Marxist and in the economic arena, greatly contributed to enhancing women's Liberal position in that society. Both North and South Korean women occupy Perspectives inferior social positions in patriarchal social systems and are subject to many discriminatory measures in the economic arena. They are also excluded from the policy-making process. Major hurdles to overcome by are ideological in North Korea and institutional and structural in South Korea.
