Who’s New... - Colorado Intermountain Chapter, Historical Vintage Truck Association.. ..President and initial Club Rep Rich Busby, who most of you know has brought this newly formed club into our ranks. Congrats on the new club and thank you for joining the Council.
- Back in the fold... ..Classic GTO Association of Denver is back, has renewed. Thanks, welcome back!
What’s New... - Denver Modernism Show... ..is an Annual Event that features retro, deco and mod furniture, art, decor, etc. Though deco goes back a bit prior to mid-century [20th] the focus is kinda’ mid-century styles. The event is held at the National Western Complex Expo Hall, this year to be Aug. 15-17th. This is the third year of the event, which last year drew some 100 vendors and over 3,000 visitor / attendees.
AND now they are adding an indoor car show for Sun. the 17th! The “Mid-Century Automotive Designs Show.” They will start off with vehicles from 1947 - 1977, picking up the beginning of the first Post-War II auto designs, both domestic and European. Emphasis is on high quality condition, whether original or restored, but focus on original factory designs [vs Rods & Customs] - at this time...
Could be a great event for your club and/or for yourself to show your favorite ride? Move-in 08- 10:00; show 10-15:00, $20 / vehicle entry fee. For more info, details, contact Mrs. Dana Cain of Dana Cain Events LLC at 303.346.8252 and/or cyber off to www.DanaCain.com
- First Impressions aka ‘the Name Game’... ..changing channels for late news. Push wrong button on remote, go astray? Up comes one of the 195x ‘Hod Rod flics.’ - remember those? Everything from “Hot Rod Babes from Hell” or whatever, right on down the line? Couldn’t help thinking, what impressions and judgements are made about us of our Special Interest area by people seeing those. Of course now we have “the Fast and the Furious” and it’s ilk ‘to reset public perception’ to fit current times.
What impact do you think it has on legislators, regulators, et ux who see these on TV? Can anyone not understand an impression, a subconscious seed is planted in their minds? Then someone equal to “a PhD level moron” starts street racing on streets in-use, or worse - thru a residential neighborhood..?
Gotta cringe every time one of those road reckless, ‘to Hell with safety of others’ street racing flicks surfaces. How many on Cap Hill see them? They are enigma to us all - just like “Old Car” is in the media... Doesn’t help any of us Colorado Motor Vehicle Enthusiasts much does it..?
- SEMA’s Federal Level MV Enthusiast’s Caucus. The “Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus...” ..last month I gave you a snapshot of SEMA’s good work putting together caucus groups at the state level. Well, here is a glimpse of what SEMA has done in D.C. as forwarded from SEMA to us by Joe Baker. [..thanks Joe...] Suggest you learn more: www.sema.org/pac
“The caucus was formed by members of Congress in 1996 in honor of the 100th year of the car and to recognize the contributions the automotive performance and motorsports industry has made to the U.S. economy. [..note focus, “economy” aka revenue vs impact on society and/or our standard of living...]
This honorary caucus, which now averages around 100 members, pays tribute to the quality, performance and safety of all motor vehicles and to America’s ever-growing love affair with the car and motorsports.” This so-called “Motorsports Caucus” has a bi-partisan membership who recognize that it is an important economic engine, worth more than $38 Billion in annual revenue - and provides jobs for more than a million Americans.
Regrettably, the list of Federal members does not include anyone from Colorado - in either house?
- “The 40th” Mountain States Swap Meet... ..an update from 2008 Chair, Gary Canady: “The meet will be Saturday August 23rd at the Adams County Fairgrounds. Located at 9755 Henderson Road; go West on 124th Avenue from US Hwy 85, appr. 1-1/2 miles. This is a good swap meet with a lot of vendors with loads of things for your auto or truck interest. Old Parts, NOS parts, NORS parts, literature, tools, supplies, automobilia and lots of other goodies. RV parking is available and food is available on-site the day of the meet.
There is also a ‘car corral’ where a mix of vehicles for sale are on display. Completed or the beginning of a project, and parts cars for the guy finishing up a project. There is a lot at the swap meet. Outdoor vendor spaces are on blacktop and indoor spaces are in the Exhibition Hall.
Vendor move-in starts at noon on Friday August 22nd. Indoor spaces are 10 x 15 feet at $40 each. Outdoor spaces are 18 x 20 feet at $35 each. Car Corral spaces are $20 per vehicle.
The gates open to the buying public at 8 AM on Saturday. Parking is $5 per car, no admission fee.
- Cruizin’ Havana... ..was a great event and a big success. Surely all the members of the Havana Business Improvement District are still grinnin?’ Their members got involved and contributed. The Council’s Dick Thompson certainly did a ton too. Does this guy live on energy drinks or what!? He’s tireless, talented, and talks it. Many thanks go out to all those clubs and club members who worked to contribute to the success of this event. Dick will fill us in soon as he gets rested and catches his breath.
Club Views & News...
- Mile High Cobra Club... ..decisions, decisions, decisions... Let’s see do we go to Steamboat Springs for the Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup, or do we go to Saratoga Wyoming, the Saratoga Inn? Ah yes, a benefit of living around ‘Geologically Active Areas,’ water ‘seeps down to the lava’ comes back up heated and you have a hot spring. Steamboat has like 105± cataloged hot springs! Dunno about Saratoga? Be driving thru great scenery either way. Have fun - bring Nomex...
- AACA, Poudre Valley... ..NL had pix from recent tours. They note that Bob Ross’s collection and garage survived the tornadoes going through Windsor in good shape, some hail damage to the roof and one window. Other nearby buildings suffered more severe damage. [..think Mr. Ross’s guardian angel might be a car type..?] NL had interesting article on history of right vs left side driving...
- American Truck Historical Society... ..did National Show in Hutchinson, Kansas. Were off to Greeley for the Father’s Day show there. And are ready for upcoming lunch / meeting, a garage tour to follow. Neat vintage pix of a 30's Packard coupe converted to tow truck - wit a pickup truck on it’s hook!
- VMCCA, Royal Gorge... ..are grinnin’ and relaxing from having ‘just shy of 400 cars’ at their annual show at Holy Cross Abbey. Neat idea, their June, July, Aug. & Sep. Meetings are picnics in local park. Are washing and waxing ‘em up for couple of tours, shows, etc.
- Rky Mtn Performance Mopars... ..justified having the word ‘performance’ in their name at Bandimere, and in their enthusiasm of what they do. Way to go guys... NL has article on ‘recent study of state troopers from 7 states,’ source not ID’d, that listed 5 ea “dos and don’ts” of conduct if stopped. [..now why would anyone ever expect any of these guys or gals to ever be stopped..? HA...]
- Pontiac-Oakland Club... ..co-hosted with local Olds Club Chapter, their annual Buick, Cadillac, Olds, Pontiac car show at Shepler’s South. Weather and the turnout were both great. Getting ready to caravan to National Convention in Spearfish in early July. Nice to have conventions so close from time to time.
- Ye Olde Auto Club... ..are getting organized for a tour to Laramie. Planning to gather to go do the “Cruizin’ Havana” event. Looking at the Adams County Fair Parade, limited to 90 vehicles. And were doing some of their planning and discussing over a pleasant lunch meeting, in good company of course.
- Front Range Mustang Club... ..went South to Albuquerque for the Rio Grande Mustang Show, stopping for breakfast at Rosie’s Diner in Monument. Brought home ‘lotsa gold’ from the show. Are ready to do some Cruisin’ at “Cruizin’ Havana. Looking ahead to MCA Grand Nationals in Park City, Utah coming up in August.
- Studebaker Club, Pikes Peak... ..are holding “Studebakers on the Lot” car show in Colorado Springs. Will be present for the fun and activities of Cruizin’ Havana. Have some neat rides to go cruisin’ in. As an Orphan brand might be the first time some younger folks get to see one? Got a
“tubbed one”..?
- AACA, Rky Mtn Region... ..NL got colorful, nice job! Cover is a montage of pix from the “Rossi Run” [..love that Cord..!] lots of neat autos and lots of smilin’ faces. Good rides, good times with good folks is what makes our Special Interest area so great - and so special. Coming events = more of same.
- Model A Ford, High Country... ..are road ready! It’s touring season and they have a full agenda again. Going to spread some sunshine at several retirement communities, a Front Range Model A Club Tour coming along with others to the Black Hills, the World Model A Ford Meet in Texas, and others. NL also has a pix of a scene we often see at Council meetings - an attentive and focused Alan Eber.
- Studebaker, Conestoga Chapter... ..gonna do Cruizin’ Havana. To be out of city traffic they’ll be doing a tour of Boulder’s Hydro-Electric & Water Treatment Plants at the Boulder Dam - after their casual drive up scenic Boulder Canyon , then have potluck picnic at not far away Betasso Preserve.
- Rky Mtn Thunderbird Club... ..are showing cars at Mike Naughton Ford for Cruizin’ Havana. Are planning for Vintage Thunderbird Club Intnl Convention, in Colorado Springs, in Aug. see Calendar. Doing car show at Westminster Mall and Kruse Auction at Merchandise Mart, both in Jul, see Calendar.
- Early Ford V8 Club, Hi-Country... ..did a seminar on convertible tops. Doing tour to “Dandelion Daze” in Holyoke. Will be bringing some neat iron out to Cruzin’ Havana. Going to tour the Dougherty Museum in Longmont. Having a “club auction.” [..anyone really wanna buy a club? Oh, Alley Oop. OK...] Great looking stuff, Don Whissen and Jim Nielson’s truck, and then Jim N’s 47 Woody and Gene Pastor’s ‘50 Merc took turns on display at Lakewood Fordland.
- Arkansas Valley Car Club... ..had ‘an enthusiastic group’ head off to ‘strike it rich at Cripple Creek,’ all had fun. [..but who got all the quarters..?] Are going cruising to “Punky’s” on Historic East Main Street. Then go from participants to running the show for their annual “Mountain Mania” on Jul 5-6.
- Please! Help me help you/us... ..you may think the few lines of what your club may be doing are not significant? Just a waste of space and time? But feedback that keeps on comin’ says otherwise. But the only way those lines get here is for your club to send it’s newsletters to the Council - at the current mailing address [top of page 1], so please check to make sure your club has the Council on the NL mailing list, and to it’s current address.
Just Misc Bits of...
- Fun or FRIGHTENING... ..small piece on-line a while back about various points of interest for those touring, vacationing around the country. Quite a variety. Something for just about any taste.
On the “fun” side of things, and ‘not too far away’ is “Carhenge” where various autos are buried on end to stand upright and/or stacked up to create a simile of Stonehenge. This is in Alliance, Nebraska.
Then, on the frightening side? Picture that you’re running a little late, arriving at dusk, the skies are darkening more from an approaching storm, wind is gusting, lightning strikes nearby, the boom of thunder blasts thru your car, rattles your composure. As you come around a bend, your headlights shine onto a frightening, thirteen foot high apparition! The children cling to you, the dog jumps over the back seat to hide under a blanket. Lightning flashes, lights it up. It gets scarier yet! Because now the toothy grin of a Jimmy Carter caricature as the head of this 13 foot high ‘concrete peanut’ is clear to see... Welcome to ‘a monument’ built to ‘Jimmy’ in Plains, Georgia. [..pass the flask and
the Valium Ma...]
- 24 Hours of LeMons..? [..fr Wilma Sisbarro in RMPM NL...] “..No, it’s not LeMans, read ‘lemons’ - get it? This might fall into the ‘junk sports’ category, but it sure sounds like fun. Their web site states, ‘In all motorsports, no event captures the universal human need to whale away on old crapcans and to hoover down greasy barbeque like the 24 Hours of LeMons does.”
The event, held at Altamont Motor Sports Park, Tracy, Cal. in early May, is for cars purchased, fixed up, and track-prepped for a total of $500±. To reach the final grid, “You’ll have to survive trials like the “Personal Injury Lawyer Anti-Slalom,” the “Marxist-Valet Parking Challenge,” and the Wide Open Throttle Rod-throw-a-palooza.” Last year’s winner, a 1986 Toyota Supra completed a mind- numbing 2,433 laps in 24 hours. [.. sounds like a fun event - except maybe to those with their noses held so high they’re inhaling from the Ionosphere eh... wbc]
- We see U.S. Presidents age so quickly in office... ..hear some ask ‘why would they want to do it?’ Well, for those who are good leaders, managers, etc. it is an honor to serve our/ their country, and to just attain ‘the office’ - is an honor second only to being awarded “the Congressional Medal of Honor.” But there are other ‘reward$,’ most not vi$ible until after they leave office. Little piece on- line tells that Bill & Hillary have made nearly $109,000,000 since 2000. So, think it’s worth it now..?

Other Matters...
- And info just keeps on coming...... respected Geophysicist, Philip Chapman, a former NASA Astronaut-Scientist, former president of the National Space Society recently advised, “You probably haven’t heard much of ‘Solar Cycle 24’ the current cycle that our sun has entered, and I hope you don’t. If Solar Cycle 24 becomes a household term, your lifestyle could be taking a dramatic turn for the worse... ..Sunspot activity has now dropped to nil... ..as it has prior to previous Ice Ages...”
http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/fpcomment/archive/2008/05/30/the-deniers-our-spotless- sun.aspx [..maybe do searches for Solar Cycle 24 too..?]
[..this, above sent in to fwd to you... Look, read open-mindedly, become and stay informed. wbc]
- What are other states doing... ..this is excerpted from SEMA’s Driving Force NL:
“Land of 10,000 Lakes? Try 13,000 Street Rodders! Since its founding in 1967, the Minnesota Street Rod Association [MSRA] has worked hard to ensure the future of automotive interests in the North Star State. From the original 12 members meeting at a pizzeria in Minneapolis, the MSRA now has over 13,000 members. Their annual “Back to the ‘50's Show” attracts more than 11,000 vehicles and over 100,000 spectators.
Through all of this, the MSRA has always kept its focus on building good relationships with state lawmakers and regulators. For the last 15 years the MSR A Legislative Committee has organized a “Run to the Hill” to inform legislators at the State Capitol on how the pending bills they are considering will impact the hobby. In years when there are no pressing issues, MSRA members use the event as an opportunity to educate lawmakers about their organization and Special Interest Area, build good relations. These relationships are of great, maybe saving benefit - when support is needed on any issue that may cause problems for enthusiasts. A “Run” for the Council to get in place too... In working with SEMA Action Network over the years, the MSRA has been very successful in
having friendly legislation enacted, including the adoption of the Street Rod License Plate; an ethanol mandate exemption for Special Interest/ Collector vehicles’ a law permitting the use of “Blue Dot” taillights; and an exemption for Special Interest/Collector vehicles from a bill that establishes the California Emissions Requirements in Minnesota.
As it proudly states on their website, “MSRA is about Friends, Food, Fun and Fellowship - but most about having fun with cars! So lean back and let’s go cruisin’!”
Lessons to be learned here is establishing, maintaining good relationships is very valuable, plus when a properly planned and executed ‘mass drive-by’ at the Capitol, if combined with having ‘some pre-selected vehicles/ owners’ stop to have ‘a Show and Tell’ on the Capitol grounds with legislators opens and holds open the doors of good communications.
Some Known Bills / Actions of Interest in / to Colo. are... The Legislature has ended it’s current session. But - DO NOT think nothing is going on! This begins the season when all the bills that were defeated, did not get passed, were pulled, or - just ‘didn’t make it to the floor get recycled back to their originators / sponsors. Plus all the new legislation that will appear next session is being drafted, seeking support, sponsors, etc. So now is the time to start talking with the sponsor/ authors of bills reported on to date.
- How do we get involved in the process... ..it is known who authored, sponsored what bills last session. Most of the same bills will come back in the next session - likely stronger after elections. Harold Naber worked to get himself ‘involved with things up front, in-process.’ Keith got involved with RAQC. What will be done to introduce ourselves into the process with these bills/ people now!? Let’s start the process - now! It is well proven that proactive is far better than reactive? What do you want..?
Updates and Items from SEMA... This is info received by Joe Baker, who may paraphrase to send to the Council. Where for space sake it might [with regrets] then be compressed a tad more. Joe does a real service to us in doing this. More complete info can be obtained from Steve McDonald at SEMA, [email protected] on specific issues.
- SEMA eNews, Vol 11, No. 24.
. DELAWARE ENACTS LAW TO EXEMPT STREET RODS FROM INSPECTIONS. - SEMA supported legislation to exempt street rods from the state’s regular safety inspections was approved b the State Legislature and signed into law by the governor. Under an agreement reached with state regulators, the registration and titling process will be changed administratively to allow street rods to be assigned a registration and titling designation bearing the same model year that the body of the vehicle resembles.
. SEMA MODEL BILL FOR STREET RODS, CUSTOMS INTRODUCED IN NEW JERSEY. - SEMA model legislation that would create a vehicle registration classification for street rods and custom vehicles and provide for special license plates for these vehicles was introduced in the New Jersey legislature. The bill defines a street rod as an altered vehicle manufactured before 1949 and a custom as an altered vehicle at least 25 years old and manufactured after 1948. The bill allows kit cars and replica vehicles to be assigned a certificate of title bearing the same model year designation the body of the vehicle most closely resembles.
. NORTH CAROLINA INTRODUCES REPLICA VEHICLE BILL. - a version of SEMA Model Legislation to create a vehicle registration classification for replica vehicles has been introduced in the No. Carolina Senate. Under the bill, replicas are defined as motor vehicles sold unassembled and manufactured from a kit that, when assembled, replicate an
earlier year, make and model vehicle. The bill allows replica vehicles to be assigned a certificate of title bearing the same model year designation the body of the vehicle most closely resembles.
Items from SAN Newsletter... Info from SEMA Action Network’s monthly NL, passed on to keep you and your Club Members informed of things in other states - that you can bet will come here too - if they create revenue or give more control.

- Who is doing what with your money..!? Our focus here is clearly to monitor and protect ourselves as Motor Vehicle Enthusiasts. But if our basic Liberty and Rights are eroded, common sense tells anyone - it’s only a matter of time until... ..history of the world. Now we learn that Disney[!?], Publix, Wal-Mart and several other large corporate giants have owners/ management who are, and are also contributing from corporate coffers to fund assaults on your God-given right to defend yourselves!
