Modern Foreign Languages
KS3
All students have the opportunity to study Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) in order that they can become confident and competent communicators in a foreign language.
Year 7: French and German – 1 hour each
Year 8: French and Spanish – 1 hour each
Year 9: French or German – 2 hours
The MFL department is committed to the development of confident and competent foreign language communicators. Provision was expanded in KS3 in 2013 whereby pupils started a 2nd MFL in Y8 i.e. 1hr French + 1hr 2MFL. From September 2013 they have then continued with their preferred language for 2 hours a week in Y9 and started the GCSE course. From this year, the 2nd MFL has been started in Y8 and Y7 so that next year, the current Year 8 will have 2hrs of their preferred language in Year 9 and the current Year 7 will select their preferred language to study for 2hrs a week for the rest of KS3. This offers a flexible programme delivering opportunities based on personal progress, individual interests and learning needs. Minority languages are recognised and provision is made in KS3 and KS4 for EAL learners to take a GCSE in their mother tongue if this is available.

The modern foreign languages we offer – French and Spanish – are accessible languages with close cultural links to us. Students have already begun studying the GCSE content within Year 9 and therefore we would advise for students to continue with their study. More and more universities now require a GCSE MFL for entry.
