Modern Foreign Languages

KS3

All students have the opportunity to study Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) in order that they can become confident and competent communicators in a foreign language.

Year 7: French and German – 1 hour each

Year 8: French and Spanish – 1 hour each

Year 9: French or German – 2 hours

The MFL department is committed to the development of confident and competent foreign language communicators. Provision was expanded in KS3 in 2013 whereby pupils started a 2nd MFL in Y8 i.e. 1hr French + 1hr 2MFL. From September 2013 they have then continued with their preferred language for 2 hours a week in Y9 and started the GCSE course. From this year, the 2nd MFL has been started in Y8 and Y7 so that next year, the current Year 8 will have 2hrs of their preferred language in Year 9 and the current Year 7 will select their preferred language to study for 2hrs a week for the rest of KS3. This offers a flexible programme delivering opportunities based on personal progress, individual interests and learning needs. Minority languages are recognised and provision is made in KS3 and KS4 for EAL learners to take a GCSE in their mother tongue if this is available.

Year 7

Term French German

1 Tout sur moi Meine Welt und ich and Familie und Tiere + Christmas (Sept – Oct)

(Nov – Dec) Mon monde person + Christmas

2 Autour de moi Freizeit (Jan – March)

3 A table and mon quartier Schule ist Klasse (April – June)

(July) Ideal school uniform

Year 8 Term French Spanish

1 Destination vacances Me present and Me describe

(Sept – Oct)

2 Bouger, c’est important El insti (Jan – March)

3 Le monde des medias and Accro a la Donde vivo yo (April – July) Technologie

Year 9

Term French (Pre-GCSE) German (Pre-GCSE)

1 Le monde des medias Gute Reise (S1) + Iche liebe Ferien (S2) (Sept – Oct)

(Nov – Dec) Accro a la technologie Schule ist Klasse (S1)

2 Un metier, un reve Bist du ein Medienfan? Students have already begun studying the GCSE content within Year 9 and therefore we would advise for students to continue with their study. More and more universities now require a GCSE MFL for entry.

What will you learn?

You will learn valuable life skills:

to hold a basic conversation

to express your ideas and thoughts in writing

to understand a reasonable level of the spoken language

to understand a wide variety of written texts

to understand how the basic grammar of the language works

to have a good knowledge of vocabulary in a variety of simple topic areas

to be able to use the language in a business and social context

to understand and appreciate the culture of other countries.

How will the course be assessed?

Assessment GCSE

Listening, reading, Exams 25% for each skill speaking and writing

KS5

A Level Spanish

Exam Board - Edexcel

Core Content

Social Issues and Trends

Political and Artistic Culture

Immigration and Multiculturalism Transition from Dictatorship to Democracy

Grammar

A Level students will be expected to have studied the grammatical system and structures of the language during their course.
