Music Theory (9-12) Revised 2010-11 Teacher: Mrs. Parker Semester Course
Course Description This course is designed to provide students with extended musical knowledge and application of music theory. This is an advanced course. Prior musical knowledge is helpful but not required.
Course Outline We will move through the following as students learn each concept: Basic Musical Notation Scales & Keys Modes & Tone Rows Intervals Chords (triads, 7th, figured bass, commercial) Form Transposition Harmonization Chord Patterns & Cadences Part Writing
Sight Singing, Dictation, & Rhythm will also be covered on a weekly basis during LAB days
Classroom Rules and Procedures
STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO: 1. Attend all classes – school policy will be enforced 2. Be prepared for class. You will be expected to keep a detailed notebook and folder of information. 3. Be attentive during class. When the teacher is talking you are listening. Your questions and comments will be taken by raising your hand. Class participation is urged. 4. Be on time. School policy will be enforced 5. All missed assignments or tests must be made up by the third day after returning from an illness. If you will be missing class for any other reason (ie, field trip, doctor appt.) you must notify the teacher in advance. It is your responsibility to make up work in order to gain necessary points and avoid an incomplete or failing grade.
STUDENTS WILL NOT: 1. Chew gum, or eat in class. 2. Use any alcohol, tobacco products, or other controlled substances in class.
Grading Policy The following will be averaged to determine the grade you earn for this class. Exams/Projects: 50% 93-100 A Assignments: 25% 86-92 B Participation/Preparation: 25% 77-85 C (You will start with 100 points and can lose up to 5 weekly if not prepared or not participating) 70-76 D 0-69 F
