Copyright ©1995 BMW CCA NCC derr der Bayerische November/December In Response After reading of Al Zavala's Drivers' School befuddlement Qui/Aug dB), member Tom Verba offers up this hypothesis: Dear Al, Here are some comments on why we're not filling Drivers' Schools. In the Past we've had five schools per year; each school had 60 DUs (Driver Units) and perhaps 20 DEs (Driver Extras or Standbys). 60 x 5 = 300 plus 20 x 5 = 100 totalling 400 DUDEs for drivers' schools. Now, some of the DEs that didn't fill slots vacat ed by no-shows became COWs (COrner Workers). And, of course, some of the DUDEs brought FOOLs (Friends, Others, Or Lovers) who were recruited to be COWs. If we take the 400 DUDEs and divide by 8 (the # of schools this year), we have 50 DUHs (Driver Units Here) with no DETs (Driver Extras There) to be COWs. ...It's Mathematical. Speaking of FOOLs; suppose a DUDE brings a FOOL who lands up being a COW. The FOOL, thinking "Oh, BMW Club... I'll wear my high-fashion jacket, silk shirt, and espadrilles." So here's this dang FOOL COW in the oppressive heat, freezing cold, blazing sun, rain, snow, dust, ice, track dirt (Choose one or sev eral) for eight hours interrupted only by a lunch of a hoagie, chips, and a Yoo-Hoo... We give the COW a T- shirt. ...Dat's Da Name O' Dat Tune! Somewhat seriously, some schools are scheduled in March and November when the weather in the West Virginia panhandle can be frightful; often holiday weekend Mondays (and Tuesday, 4 July, this year). Perhaps, plain weekend Saturdays and Sundays are better dates. Also, there has been some talk of doing away with ther Highway Safety School. Why not replace it with DRISC 101— Introduction to Drivers' School? At every school, up to twenty students could do: 2hrs class room— introducing first timers to the jargon they'll be hearing (i.e., threshold braking, apex, understeer, oversteer, "Oh shit!"); 2hrs corner working with regulars; lunch— DUDEs, FOOLs, and COWs need to be trained to eat that stuff (Paulette, I'm just kidding here). After lunch, 2-3 hrs of skid pad, and a cone course set up in the Paddock or elsewhere. Conclude the day with a two-lap ride around Summit Point in Instructor's cars (brown trousers optional). This would show Newcomers all aspects of our Drivers' Schools and hopefully result in a new gang of DUDEs and a herd of COWs, not to mention (but I will) more FOOLs. I'm joking, of course, calling volunteers FOOLs. But, a primer for corner workers (sent with school info) would be helpful—telling the vagaries of the weather at Summit Point, the need for rain gear, gloves, water, chairs, sunscreen; "Don't wear red or yellow"; clever two-way radio repartee; etc.

AWESOME, with 550hp and Twin Turbos,- this agressive 200+mph - Zero to 60 in 2.8 seconds, ALL-WHEEL-DRIVE, Ruf Rocket "YellowBird" CTR was built, from the platform up, by RUF GmbH in Pfaffenhassen, Germany in 1993, approximately 3,000 miles ago, at the the whopping cost of $ 285,780.00. Formerly David Beddor owned/Steve Beddor driven - the Beddors made worldwide news with their sure footed All Wheel Drive YellowBirds in Road & Track / Car and Driver and on ESPN news. It's in Show Condition and has been maintained by Ruf experts all of its life with no expenses spared. This is not just a patchwork of installed Ruf parts (as many claimed Rufs are). This Ruf Rocket was built by Ruf from the bodypan up - as a genuine 'YellowBird' and sold by by Robert DeMars LTD for David Beddor & Mr. Ruf himself in 1997. One of the last CTR 1s made on the 964 platform - it's fully street driveable with a Kevlar lighweight body and Black lightweight interior (plus added Power Windows & Air Conditioning) and ideal for Autocross or other 'go to the head of the class' Racing. Just 23 'YellowBirds' were made, at immense cost, from 1987 to 1995, and this - the last, fastest, safest (and most expensive) model , is one of only two (2) AWD CTRs ever made.

Somehow an event devoted to the gravitas and authenticity of the air-cooled Porsche era took the spotlight among the Universal Studios back lots in Hollywood which is made up of facades cleverly designed to reflect almost any time and place. Essentially, a land of make believe, ideal for a bit of air-cooled magic… www.porscheroadandrace.com Luftgekühlt 6 – Porsche 911 city block facade At every turn, decades of Porsche history took up temporary residence in front of fake fronts, such as hotels, a city hall, a theatre, “red brick” walls, brownstones, an opera house, a general store, a bank, a church, and advertisements. An entire city block facade, four stories high, showed doors and windows in only two dimensions bordered the event. www.porscheroadandrace.com Luftgekühlt 6 arial scene But it worked. Hundreds of historically significant race cars, custom creations, safari cars, low production specials, and just good, honest examples of period correct showroom stock – it all found a home with the common thread of the Porsche air-cooled engine. Rust, patina, wear, dirt, cracks, and age were more of a virtue than clean and bug-free. Some cars arrived in transporters while others were driven from enthusiast garages to be a part of the fun. Some attendees came from the surrounding Southern California region.

In April 2007, the CTR 3 was unveiled in Bahrain. While the first two CTR generations still had their engines in the rear, the new CTR 3 has a mid -engine design. However, one thing that the CTR 3 has in common with its two predecessors is that it is a pure driving machine. The CTR 3 is made to involve the driver in the driving experience. The mid-engine design provides exceptional balance and agile handling, while the longer wheelbase provides better driving stability at high speeds. The body of the CTR 3 is a completely new development which is not based on any existing mid-engine concept. It is aerodynamically designed for high speed. Galvanized steel is used for the front structure and the passenger compartment. The engine and transmission are fixed in a space frame and modular tubular frame construction. The passenger compartment is protected by the latest version of the famous RUF Integrated Roll Cage which is integrated into the A pillar and tube frame. The doors, with integrated side impact protection beams, and the front hood are made of aluminum.
