THE BOOK CLUB PLAY By Karen Zacarías The United States of America circa now, AD A living room This play is stylized like a film documentary. The characters know that they are being filmed but forget sometimes. Names of the experts, titles of the Books should be projected…but all the roles, including the pundits, should be live. All the dialogue should be spoken by live actors, not filmed. The set-up is a film documentary, but the language is theatrical. THIS IS NOT A FARCE; IT IS A PLAY ABOUT REAL PEOPLE. THE FUNNY SHOULD COME FROM THE HUMANITY OF THE CHARACTERS. THIS PLAY CAN BE DONE WITH 6 or 7 ACTORS. If you are using 6 actors and doubling for the pundits, then the costume changes for the pundits should be fast and minimal (1-2 articles at most). Pace and flow is vital for this play. If you are using a 7th actor for all the Pundits…then a fuller transformation can occur. The seventh actor MUST play all the PUNDIT roles: female and male. OTHER: The Book Club Play is as much about connection as it is about books. Theater patrons could write their favorite book on an adhesive name-tag as they walk into the theater, and wear it during the play to spark discussion during intermission. At the end of the performance, the stickers could be placed on a banner when they leave…so that people can see and discuss the books others have read. Book drives and video “confessionals” of reading pleasures to “Lars Knudsen” are all various easy ways to engage audiences in discussing books before, and after the play. -

Buckley A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music August 2014 Committee: Katherine Meizel, Advisor Kara Attrep Megan Rancier © 2014 Katie Buckley All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Katherine Meizel, Advisor Glee, a popular FOX television show that began airing in 2009, has continuously pushed the limits of what is acceptable on American television. This musical comedy, focusing on a high school glee club, incorporates numerous stereotypes and real-world teenage struggles. This thesis focuses on the queer characteristics of four female personalities: Santana, Brittany, Coach Beiste, and Coach Sue. I investigate how their musical performances are producing a constructive form of mass media by challenging hegemonic femininity through camp and by producing relatable queer female role models. In addition, I take an ethnographic approach by examining online fan blogs from the host site Tumblr. But what happens when we turn a critical eye toward the messages cloaked within this supposedly feminist missive? A close examination of popular music associated with girl empowerment reveals that many of the messages found within these lyrics are frighteningly just as damaging as the misogynistic, violent, and explicitly sexual ones found in the usual fare of top 100 Hits. -

GUILT, FORGIVENESS, AND RECONCILIATION IN CONTEMPORARY MUSIC Ariana Sarah Phillips-Hutton Darwin College Department of Music University of Cambridge This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2017 ABSTRACT IS SORRY REALLY THE HARDEST WORD? GUILT, FORGIVENESS, AND RECONCILIATION IN CONTEMPORARY MUSIC Ariana S. Phillips-Hutton Guilt, forgiveness, and reconciliation are fundamental themes in human musical life, and this thesis investigates how people articulate these experiences through musical performance in contemporary genres. I argue that by participating in performances, individuals enact social narratives that create and reinforce wider ideals of music’s roles in society. I assess the interpenetrations of music and guilt, forgiveness, and reconciliation through a number of case studies spanning different genres preceded by a brief introduction to my methodology. My analysis of Arnold Schoenberg’s A Survivor from Warsaw illustrates the themes (guilt, confession and memorialisation) and approach I adopt in the three main case studies. My examination of William Fitzsimmons’s indie folk album The Sparrow and the Crow, investigates how ideals of authenticity, self-revelation, and persona structure our understanding of the relationship between performer and audience in confessional indie music. Analyses of two contemporary choral settings of Psalm 51 by Arvo Pärt and James MacMillan examine the confessional relationship between human beings and God. I suggest that by -

The use of language by individuals is influenced by many factors. Gender is one factor that influences the use of language. In this research, gender is seen to be different from sex. It is seen as a social construction rather than as a fixed category. As a result, women and men do not stick to one language style but change it based on their social context. Therefore, the researcher was interested in analyzing the women’s language used by a feminine man named Kurt Hummel in Glee Television Series Season 1. In conducting the research, a research question was formulated: What women’s language features does Kurt Hummel use in his speech in Glee Television Series Season 1? The research was qualitative research in which discourse analysis was employed to analyze the data. -
