    For dreams to manifest into reality, it requires more than a fairytale wish… Truthfully, it takes hustle, heart, and a whole lot of attitude. For as much as Ava Max could always envision her dream, she actually went out and made it a reality on her own. Gathering billions of streams, multiplatinum plaques, award nominations, and acclaim from The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and many more, the international phenomenon projects an unbelievable personal journey into a poignant and punchy pop opus on her full-length debut album, Heaven & Hell [APG/Atlantic Records]. “Manifesting is really important to me,” she explains. “I put positive energy into my music. I know what I want to write, and there’s a story behind each song. It’s all about working hard and putting your heart and soul into it.” She started doing so as a kid. Prior to her birth in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Ava’s parents emigrated from Albania to the United States. Without speaking a word of English, mom and dad held down three jobs each. However, both parents retained a passion for music. Among her earliest memories, Ava recalls her mother—a classically trained vocalist—singing opera aloud. The family relocated to Virginia where they eventually settled in their first house. Along the way, Ava clung to music, listening to Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Shania Twain, to name a few. “At a very young age, I watched my parents really struggle in America,” she admits. “It was tough, and it impacted me in many ways. However, both of them always told me if they could make it here with no language and no money, then I could make it.” While in Virginia, she dove headfirst into music with the family staunchly behind her.

    THE BOOK CLUB PLAY By Karen Zacarías The United States of America circa now, AD A living room This play is stylized like a film documentary. The characters know that they are being filmed but forget sometimes. Names of the experts, titles of the Books should be projected…but all the roles, including the pundits, should be live. All the dialogue should be spoken by live actors, not filmed. The set-up is a film documentary, but the language is theatrical. THIS IS NOT A FARCE; IT IS A PLAY ABOUT REAL PEOPLE. THE FUNNY SHOULD COME FROM THE HUMANITY OF THE CHARACTERS. THIS PLAY CAN BE DONE WITH 6 or 7 ACTORS. If you are using 6 actors and doubling for the pundits, then the costume changes for the pundits should be fast and minimal (1-2 articles at most). Pace and flow is vital for this play. If you are using a 7th actor for all the Pundits…then a fuller transformation can occur. The seventh actor MUST play all the PUNDIT roles: female and male. OTHER: The Book Club Play is as much about connection as it is about books. Theater patrons could write their favorite book on an adhesive name-tag as they walk into the theater, and wear it during the play to spark discussion during intermission. At the end of the performance, the stickers could be placed on a banner when they leave…so that people can see and discuss the books others have read. Book drives and video “confessionals” of reading pleasures to “Lars Knudsen” are all various easy ways to engage audiences in discussing books before, and after the play.

Please note the different venue and the lower price. I am excited to wrap up this season by co-moderating this panel with the amazing, Mara Schwartz Kuge! We take a vacation in the month of July, but next up is our Second Annual Summer Networking Mixer at the Palihouse in West Hollywood on August 27th. Come join us for an entire evening of networking. Bring plenty of business cards and register early—you don’t want to miss this one! Lastly, please join me in thanking our 2018–2019 Board of Directors. These amazing women and men sacrifice so much of their time and energy to ensure that all of the CCC activities are planned and executed without a hitch. Some of their accomplishments are: • Amazing panel discussions with relevant content. • New format that enables the meetings to end promptly at 9pm. • Extended season that now runs from August–June. • New banking partner that offered more favorable rates and lower fees. • The Scholarship Fund is now an official 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization. • Producing another rousing Apollo-Award Holiday bash.
