Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment. -

(P. scandens) has been used in folk medicines as an important crude drug. It has mainly been used for treatment of toothaches, chest pain, piles, hemorrhoids, and emesis. It has also been used as a diuretic. Research has shown that P. scandens delivers anti-nociceptive, anti-inflammatory, and anti- tumor activity. Phytochemical screening has revealed the presence of iridoid glucosides, volatile oils, flavonoids, glucosides, and other metabolites. This review provides a comprehensive report on traditional medicinal uses, chemical constituents, and pharmacological profiles ofP. scandens as a natural medicine. Introduction: Almost 25 years have passed since HEPPNER & DUCKWORTH (1981) published their 'Classification of the Superfamily Sesioidea'. Important monographs covering the Palearctic and Nearctic regions, and partly South America or South-East Asia have been made available (EICHLIN & DUCKWORTH 1988, EICHLIN 1986, 1989, 1995b and 1998, ŠPATENKA et al. 1999, KALLIES & ARITA 2004), and numerous descriptions of new taxa as well as revisions of genera and species described by earlier authors have been published, mainly dealing with the Oriental region (ARITA & GORBUNOV 1995c, ARITA & GORBUNOV 1996b etc.). -

Bautista State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture, Division of Plant Industry, Plant Pest Control Branch, 1428 South King Street, Honolulu, HAWAII 96814, USA [email protected] Abstract The skunkvine, Paederia foetida L., also known as Maile pilau in Hawaii, is an invasive weed that smothers shrubs, trees, and native flora in dry to wet forests. It disrupts perennial crops and takes over landscaping in moist to wet areas on four Hawaiian Islands. Skunk-vine is considered a noxious weed in southern United States (Alabama and Florida) and also an aggressive weed in Brazil, New Guinea, Christmas and Mauritius Islands. Chemical control is difficult without non-target damage as the vine mixes up with desirable plants. Biological control is thought to be the most suitable option for long term management of the weed in Hawaii and Florida. Skunk-vine and most species of genus Paederia are native to tropical and subtropical Asia, from as far as India to Japan and Southeast Asia. There are no native plants in the tribe Paederieae in Hawaii and Florida and the potential for biological control looks promising. A recent survey in October-December 2010, after the rainy season in Thailand and Laos, confirmed the presence of several insect herbivores associated with P. foetida and three other Paederia species. A leaf- tying moth (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), two hawk moths (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae), a herbivorous rove beetle (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae), a chrysomelid leaf beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), a sharpshooter leafhopper (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), and a leaf-sucking lace bug (Hemiptera: Tingidae) were the most damaging to the vine during the survey period. -
Molecular and Morphological Support for a Florida Origin of the Cuban

Gugger* and Jeannine Cavender-Bares Department of Ecology, Evolution and ABSTRACT Behavior, University of Minnesota, 100 Ecology Aim The origins of the Cuban biota are of long-standing interest in Building, 1987 Upper Buford Circle, Saint Paul, MN, USA biogeography, and the source of a small live oak (Quercus series Virentes) population on Cuba remains unresolved. Based on morphological evidence, previous authors have hypothesized a Florida origin from either Q. geminata or Q. virginiana or both; a Mexican origin from Q. oleoides; or a hybrid origin from both sources. We use molecular data and taxonomically informative leaf morphology to identify the source species and timing of colonization. Location Cuba, Central America, Mexico and the south-eastern United States. Methods We collected representative samples of Cuban oaks and each putative source species and genotyped each sample at 12 nuclear microsatellites and two chloroplast DNA sequences. We estimated population structure using a Bayesian clustering analysis and F-statistics, pairwise migration rates among taxa, and divergence time using an isolation-with-migration model. We measured seven leaf traits and conducted an analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) to determine which putative source species was most similar to Cuban oaks. Results Cuban oak contains one chloroplast DNA haplotype, which is common in southern Florida. Bayesian clustering analysis of microsatellites revealed that the Cuban oak forms a distinct and pure population cluster, and F-statistics showed that Cuban oaks are differentiated least from Q. virginiana and most from Q. -
