The theme ‘Unbounded: The Agency of Art and Design’ emerged from discussions which started almost immediately after the conclusion of the 2018 Annual Conference in Cardiff. These discussions focussed on the value of an arts education, and how art and design education encourages people to explore, to experiment, to question. Despite the economic success of the UK creative industries totalling £101.5bn a year, we are challenged in our ability to influence policy that directly affects our sector and internally within our institutions to advocate for the creative subjects. The ABRSM reports based on that research had a significant impact on the music education environment. With the Wider Opportunities programme established, the publication of Darren Henley’s February 2011 report into music education in England, the November 2011 National Plan for Music Education and the setting up of the Music Education Hubs network in England – plus the deepest recession in the UK for many years – now seems an appropriate time to look again at what is happening to musical instrument teaching and learning. This report, we believe, will be of huge significance in a changing music educational environment. Its significance has been enhanced by the willing cooperation of the many organisations that have helped ABRSM with this project.

    Cold Comfort and Home Truths: Informing the review of jazz in England _________________________________________________________________________________________ Foreword and Summary by John Fordham The American-born art of jazz has been a vivid presence in English music for over 90 years - taking root in the country’s culture within a decade of the first jazz recordings being released in New York in 1917, and fascinating successive generations of players and fans ever since with variations on the original models that have told increasingly distinctive local stories. But the focus of this report is not a comprehensive history of jazz music’s evolution in England, intriguing though it has been. Our objectives are practical and contemporary - to enable the English jazz constituency to use its jazz-supporting resources as effectively as possible, and to help facilitate the promotion of all forms “Jazz has shown of jazz, and further its development. Vasily Petrenko was appointed Principal Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2006; in September 2009 he became Chief Conductor. He is now the Orchestra’s longest serving conductor since Sir Charles Groves, who was principal conductor from 1963 – 1977. He has helped boost audience numbers for concerts by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and they are now 17% higher than when he first took up the baton. Petrenko received an Honorary Fellowship from LJMU in 2012 for his outstanding contribution to Liverpool and the arts. He has also received Honorary Doctorates from the University of Liverpool and Liverpool Hope University. His other awards include German Echo Klassik Awards 2012 Newcomer of the Year for the recording of Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 3 with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (EMI Classics), the Classic BRIT Awards Male Artist of the Year in 2012 and 2010 and the Classic FM/Gramophone Awards Young Artist of the Year 2007. He is also Principal Conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, Chief Conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St Petersburg, his native city and where his professional career began in the mid-1990s.

    Speakers Darren Henley OBE is chief executive of Arts Council England. His two independent government reviews into music and cultural education resulted in England’s first National Plan for Music Education, new networks of Music Education Hubs, Cultural Education Partnerships and Heritage Schools, the Museums and Schools programme, the BFI Film Academy and the National Youth Dance Company. Before joining the Arts Council, he led Classic FM for fifteen years. He holds degrees in politics from the University of Hull, in Darren Henley management from the University of South Wales and in history of art from the University of Buckingham. A recipient of the British Academy President’s Medal for his contributions to music education, music research and the arts, his books include The Virtuous Circle: Why Creativity and Cultural Education Count (2014), The Arts Dividend: Why Investment in Culture Pays (2016) and Creativity: Why It Matters (2018). David is a Senior Policy Advisor with the Department for Education, where his work has focused on a number of areas related to the curriculum, subject-specific programmes, and David Warden social mobility. Scott Stroman is a uniquely broad musician: a composer, conductor, performer and educator in jazz, classical and world music.
