Dear student.

I believe you are soon to begin your community placement with the District Nurses at Millhill surgery.

You will be allocated a mentor on your first day; however, all staff are committed to the concept of mentorship and will be involved with your learning needs during your placement.

Please present on your first day at 0900 at reception. Please wear uniform.

Welcome to Millhill Surgery for your primary care placement.

We promote a team mentoring approach but during this placement your named mentor will be ------

SURGERY INFORMATION

Built in 1990 Millhill Surgery is a G.P. surgery with a practice population of 9370

(figure correct January 2013).

The community staff are all GP attached/based and the practice catchment area covers

Dunfermline as well as the outlying areas of Rosyth, Cairneyhill, Crossford, Halbeath,

Kingseat, Townhill and Wellwood.

SERVICES PROVIDED BY MILLHILL SURGERY

Maternity services prenatal, antenatal and postnatal care.

Child health surveillance, development and health clinics, immunisations.

Chronic disease management: including asthma, diabetes, and cardiac rehabilitation.

Minor surgery and wart clinic.

Dietetic clinic.

Psychology (child and adult).

Contraceptive services.

Smoking cessation.

Over 75 health assessment.

You will also meet many other team members during your placement including receptionists, secretaries, specialist nurses, physiotherapists and other service providers. There will also be the opportunity to access/spend time with members of the multi-disciplinary team out-with the GP practice.

5 OBJECTIVES OF PLACEMENT

(1) To enable recognition of the various multidisciplinary team members including their roles and remit.

(2) To gain experience as part of a multidisciplinary team.

(3) To be given opportunity to develop your nursing skills in a safe environment conducive to learning.

(4) To be given opportunity to participate in high standard care delivery guided by recognised national and local standards, protocols, policies and guidelines.

(5) To engage with families across the whole life cycle, searching out health needs and providing holistic care.

(6) To be actively involved in health promotion and health education.

(7) To develop your communication skills.

(8) To allow development of managerial skills including; assessment, evaluation, identification of need, clinical decision making, referral systems, liaison skills and general caseload management.

(9) To gain an understanding of formal and informal caring and support systems.

(10) To provide an insight into health and safety and risk management issues.

(11) To have a positive learning experience where the use of reflection is promoted as a method of personal development.

6 DAY ONE

Introduction to surgery team.

House keeping information: Tour of surgery. Fire safety including location of fire points, exits and extinguishers. Location of toilets and kitchen. Care of valuables.

Location of records; medical and nursing. Recordkeeping.

Confidentiality issues.

Communications; Telephones, fax, e mail

Learning resources; Library, IT, research articles, information and resources, clinical and policy manuals.

Meeting with mentor or associate mentor to:

(a) determine learning needs

(b) plan learning opportunities to meet learning outcomes

(c) develop a placement programme and learning contract

(d) discuss the on-going review of learning needs

(e) discuss student assessment

(f) evaluation of placement

OTHER INFORMATION

Hours of duty (District Nurses) 0830 – 1700 with one hour for lunch.

Uniform must be worn unless otherwise advised.

Hours of duty (Health Visitors) 0900 – 1630 with one hour for lunch.

Own clothes can be worn while on placement with the Health Visitors

(although no jeans please).
