About the Organization: SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) of Northern Virginia was founded in 1988 to promote the well- being of children, improve parent-child relations and prevent child abuse and neglect through education, public awareness and advocacy. SCAN is the only Northern Virginia organization dedicated exclusively to education and advocacy for child abuse prevention throughout the Northern Virginia region. SCAN builds hope for children and families by implementing effective, evidence-based prevention programs. In the past year, SCAN advocated for some of the most vulnerable children who have been abused or neglected through its Alexandria/Arlington Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program; strengthened hundreds of families through Parent Education efforts; and educated thousands of community members via Public Education efforts throughout Northern Virginia.

About SCAN’s Parent Education Program: At SCAN, we believe that every child deserves love and nurturing as they learn and develop. We also believe that most parents truly love their children and want to be good parents; but we know that parenting can be tough. Many parents feel isolated in the difficult job of parenting and need information, skills and support to become positive, nurturing influences in their children’s lives. Through SCAN’s Parent Education Program, we WORK TO BE AN ACCESIBLE, USEFUL SOURCE OF PARENTING INFORMATION, SUPPORT AND CONNECTIONS among families and those who influence families throughout Northern Virginia. Job Title: Parent Education Manager Supervisor/Reports to: Executive Director Average Hours/Week: Full-time (40 hours/week average), including up to two evenings per week Position Description: Plan, implement, evaluate and communicate/report on all components of SCAN’s Parent Education Program (including evidence-based parenting classes; concurrent children’s programs; educational parent support groups; teen parenting groups; parenting workshops; and publication of a parent resource guide). Role and Responsibilities:  Plan and manage Parent Education Program’s growth, development, and evaluation, including annual work plans, reports, grant applications, cultivation of potential funding sources and partnerships.  Coordinate program implementation logistics for 8-week parenting class series, 3 weekly educational parent support groups, weekly teen parenting groups, and monthly reunification support group -- including participant recruitment, scheduling, site agreements/location coordination, volunteer recruitment/training/scheduling, securing materials, food, transportation, child care, guest presenters, and troubleshooting program challenges.  Coordinate selection, training, supervision and evaluation of class and support group facilitators, including providing ongoing professional development, supporting their lesson-planning, and substituting as facilitator when needed.  Meet with parents who register for parenting classes individually to conduct intake, pre-tests, and program orientation; manage parent inquiries by phone/email and referrals for other community resources as appropriate  Train, supervise, and evaluate part-time staff, including overseeing the gathering of information on services, programs and resources for parents throughout Northern Virginia; compiling, organizing and editing information into a user-friendly resource guide and disseminating it to local service providers; and other Parent Education program duties assigned to part-time staff  Maintain service provider listserv by participating in regular networking opportunities and send monthly emails through the listserv  Track program enrollment, attendance, test scores and evaluations as well as volunteer/facilitator hours and contractor/facilitator hours/payments  Organize professional development trainings for program volunteers, contractors and parent educators from other community partners in Northern Virginia.  Stay abreast of evidence-based models and strategies in Parent Education, make recommendations on curricula selection/changes, and engage other staff/volunteers/ contractors in continual enhancement of program impact and evaluation methods.  Identify, engage and cultivate donors, volunteers and community partners that contribute to program-specific and overall organizational resource development, community reputation/position, and long-term sustainability.  Develop and cultivate relationships with related human service agencies and collaborations that contribute to programmatic and organizational strategic goals, as well as ensure linkages for families to other community resources; Identify guest speakers and schedule quarterly resource workshops with local community partners for each support group Preferred Qualifications Qualified candidates must be bilingual, self-motivated, strong communicators who possess excellent written and oral skills in both English and Spanish. The position requires an enthusiastic “people- person” with strong organizational skills, interpersonal skills, an ability to monitor/meet deadlines, and the ability to work with persons from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Candidate must understand and demonstrate commitment to maintaining the confidential nature of client and donor information. Candidate must also have a valid driver’s license and access to personal vehicle to travel to and from community locations where parent education activities take place (mileage reimbursed). The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications: • Master’s Degree in child development, social work, or similar field or equivalent experience in child welfare, social work, counseling, or human services; • Knowledge of and experience in effective parenting skills and child development; • Expertise in adult learning and training; • Superior organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and balance competing priorities; • Strong interpersonal skills and experience supervising and training others; • Flexible schedule including regular evening and occasional weekend hours; • Experience working with volunteers; • Compassionate advocate for SCAN’s mission and programs; and  Willingness to perform other duties as assigned for success of the organization.
