Approval of Alex Kolesnik moved to approve the September 28, 2015 Eileen Crump Meeting Minutes meeting minutes and Sharon Beynon second the motion. The September 28, 2015 meeting minutes were approved by the committee. Committee Goals Provide events or opportunities for diversity. Gwendolyn Huddleston To foster community connections and alliances with community services. Increase/broaden support for the Diversity in Culture Committee. Use more visual communication to promote diversity – posters, displays, and website. Engage faculty, staff, and students to support and promote diversity.
The third bullet point goal was changed. The word membership was removed and support was added in its place
Alex moved that we keep the same goals and Ann second the motion. The committee voted to approve the goals. An end-of-the-year survey will be sent out to committee members to see whether or not the goals were met.
Committee The committee voted to remove names of members who do not Gwendolyn Huddleston membership attend the committee meetings. Ann Bittl moved to approve the removal of names from the committee list and Robert Lawson seconded the motion. The following names were removed: Andrea Horigan, Kevin Bortolin, Michael Ward, Nicholas Corrette, Rick Trevino, Rubisela Gamboa, Tania DeClerck, Bill Hendricks.
Eileen will ask Rick Trevino if he wants to stay on the committee since he previously attended a meeting.
Everyone is welcome to the committee meetings at any time, but they will not be able to vote. Steve Turner will email Empathy Fair flyer to Sandy Mason to add logos and then print. Logos Eileen will email Diversity Logo, Ventura College Logo, and Eileen Crump Division Stamp to committee members. Event Flags and The committee discussed having event flags for campus events. Banners The following are suggestions for wording on flags:
Diversity in Culture Flags Ventura College logo Ventura College Special Event, Ventura College Presents Film Festival Art Gallery Event Parking Direction Flags Colloquium Send ideas for names of flags to Sandy.
It was suggested to purchase several tripods for flags and also to look into purchasing flags for light poles.
Sandy, Gwen and Ann will research prices of flags and tripods and report back to committee.
Gwen will look into applying for a Grant for Electronic Kiosks. Gwen will send information to committee for review.
Gwen will put a request to purchase five Electronic Kiosks in the VP Program Review and the Professional Development Program Review.
It was mentioned that we can make our own banners with the poster printer. We would need to purchase canvas paper to make the banners. Dinner Fundraiser The first planned dinner/fundraiser Jazz Concert, scheduled for Robert Lawson Update December 10, will not be part of the fundraiser event because it is more of a workshop then concert.
There are now three Dinner/Fundraisers planned for spring 2016. Into the Woods Waiting Room/Art gallery Dance/Art gallery Ideas for the Holistic Health Diversity in Culture Autism Awareness Festival Earth Day events Waiting Room (preview play 4 or 5 minutes long) Student Art Music Expose Native American History African Dance and Drum Group Aztec Dancers Hula Dancers Celebrate Ventura College Anniversary Music performances Veterans Awareness Clotheslines Mural Wall or Graffiti Wall ThinkB4UDrink Cultural Awareness Speakers Panel on Race and Identity Japanese music or dance Improv Theater Comedy show Spanish Heritage Dancers Artist booth from Vitae and Bell Arts Factory Art faculty will have arts, craft and jewelry demonstrations The library can create a booklist of recommended reading. One Book, One Campus VC Voices
Eileen will forward Niki Milani’s list of recommended speakers to the committee. Gwen will talk to Michael Ward about having Native American Dancers for the festival. Robert will only give one Music Expose during festival. Gwen will talk to Lucy about the ThinkB4UDrink event. Robert will research African Drumming and Gamelan entertainment. The committee will begin working on the festival calendar.
It was recommended by the committee to have alternate days of instruction during the festival so that faculty can take students to festival activities that relate to their lessons.
The committee will create a Save-the-Date flyer. Festival Job Trevelyn will check on Dance Groups within the Assignments community and college. Nathan will check on Improv Theater. Robert will check on music performances. Alex will talk to Sue Royer about having food vendors and food trucks for the festival as well as any restrictions that apply. Nathan will look into having LGBT speaker or event.
