Social studies is the study of people in relation to each other and to the world in which they live. This course focuses on Canada’s social, political, and economic characteristics and how they are influenced by the country’s geographic and cultural diversity. It also focuses on Canada’s democracy and the role of the citizen in that government, as well as Canada’s role in the global village and Canada’s responsibilities and potential for leadership regarding current global issues. As a student enrolled in an independent study course, you have taken on a dual role—that of a student and a teacher. As a student, you are responsible for mastering the lessons and completing the learning activities and assignments. As a teacher, you are responsible for checking your work carefully, noting areas in which you need to improve, and motivating yourself to succeed. What Will You Learn in This Course? In each lesson, you will read a few pages and then complete a learning activity and/or assignment. Some lessons may require you to do some investigative research in your community. There are four modules in this course: Q Module 1: Diversity and Pluralism in Canada Q Module 2: Law, Order, and Good Governance Q Module 3: Canada in the Global Context Q Module 4: Canada—Opportunities and Challenges It is recommended that you work through the modules in their given order. Your midterm examination will cover material from Modules 1 and 2, while your final examination will cover material from Modules 3 and 4. Introduction 3 How Is This Course Organized? Each module in this course consists of several lessons, which contain the following components: Q Introduction: Each lesson begins with an explanation of what you will be learning in that lesson. Q Outcomes: Learning outcomes are goals you should have accomplished by the end of the lesson, as prescribed by Manitoba Education. Q Lesson: The main body of the lesson is made up of the content that you need to learn. It includes explanations, diagrams, and fully completed examples. Q Summary: Each lesson ends with a brief review of what you just learned. Q Learning Activities: Most lessons have a learning activity. These include questions that you should complete in order to help you practice or review what you have just learned. Once you have finished a learning activity, you should check your answers with the answer key provided. Q Assignments: Assignments are found at the end of lessons. In total, all assignments will be worth a total of 60% of your final mark. You will mail or electronically submit all of your completed assignments to the Distance Learning Unit for assessment. Q Glossary Terms: Throughout the lessons, there will be bolded words. Most of these bolded words are terms that are defined in the glossary included at the end of the course. What Resources Will You Need for This Course? Required Resources You do not need a textbook to complete this course. All the content is provided in this package. Here is a list of things that you need to complete this course: Q Current atlas Q Dictionary Q Notebook or computer (to complete your assignments and take notes) 4 Grade 9 Social Studies (10F): Canada in the Contemporary World Optional Resources It would be helpful if you had access to the following resources: Q Photocopier/scanner: With access to a photocopier/scanner, you could make a copy of your assignments before submitting them so that if your tutor/ marker wants to discuss an assignment with you over the phone, each of you will have a copy. It would also allow you to continue studying or to complete further lessons while your original work is with the tutor/marker. Photocopying or scanning your assignments will also ensure that you keep a copy in case the originals are lost. Q Resource people: Access to local resource people, such as teachers, school counsellors, and librarians, would help you complete the course. Q A computer with word processing software: Access to word processing software (e.g., Microsoft Word) would help you complete some assignments.

The curriculum includes reading selections and learning activities appropriate for the different reading levels of both upper elementary and secondary students. The purpose of the unit is for students to develop skills in brainstorming, biography writing, letter writing, note taking, researching, interviewing, spelling, and vocabulary. Reading selections focus on Elijah Harper, an Ojibway Cree Indian who helped defeat the Meech Lake Accord, an amendment to Canada's Constitution proposed in 1987. The Meech Lake Accord would have transferred power from the federal government to provincial governments and would have failed to take into account the interests of Natives, women, and minorities. The curriculum also includes reading selections on the creation of the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry and on Crazy Horse.

    HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL TEACHING RESOURCE FOR THE PROMISE OF CANADA, BY CHARLOTTE GRAY Author’s Note Greetings, educators! While I was in my twenties I spent a year teaching in a high school in England; it was the hardest job I’ve ever done. So first, I want to thank you for doing one of the most important and challenging jobs in our society. And I particularly want to thank you for introducing your students to Canadian history, as they embark on their own futures, because it will help them understand how our past is what makes this country unique. When I sat down to write The Promise of Canada, I knew I wanted to engage my readers in the personalities and dramas of the past 150 years. Most of us find it much easier to learn about ideas and values through the stories of the individuals that promoted them. Most of us enjoy history more if we are given the tools to understand what it was like back then—back when women didn’t have the vote, or back when Indigenous children were dragged off to residential schools, or back when Quebecers felt so excluded that some of them wanted their own independent country. I wanted my readers to feel the texture of history—the sounds, sights and smells of our predecessors’ lives. If your students have looked at my book, I hope they will begin to understand how the past is not dead: it has shaped the Canada we live in today. I hope they will be excited to meet vivid personalities who, in their own day, contributed to a country that has never stopped evolving.

    Controversy Surrounding The Environment Amendment Act: Balancing the Risk of West Nile Virus Over Malathion Fogging LEAH ROSS My wife and I get sick when the pesticide trucks come around every year. We don’t need to hear when our area is being fogged—we can feel it in our legs, a dull ache that tells us the poison truck has come. We have tried to get our house taken off the list, and the city has duly recorded our name and address, but it has no effect. The guys on the truck just spray everything, including people’s vegetable gardens. Once my wife saw them spray our house and ran outside to tell them we were supposed to be missed. The guy on the truck noticed her, turned around… and sprayed her with the fog…. Another night we saw them playing with the neighbour’s dog, who likes chasing water hoses and figured, somewhere in his tiny dog brain, that he was playing the same game. He cheerfully chased the spray around his dog pad, his muzzle dripping with malathion. The truck had stopped so that the sprayer could play this game for a minute or two. We never bothered to complain, figuring that if they weren’t going to respect our wish to be bypassed, they weren’t going to investigate our complaint. It’s our word against theirs.1 I.     Interview with Phil Fontaine * BRYAN P. SCHWARTZ I. INTRODUCTION Bryan Paul Schwartz (BPS): You grew up in Sagkeeng,1 and you were one of nineteen children? Phil Fontaine (PF): No, I was one of twelve. BPS: Twelve, yeah. PF: Ten boys, two girls. I was the youngest boy, number ten, and then there were my two younger sisters. There are four of us left; an older brother, obviously, and myself, and my sisters Thelma and Audrey. BPS: We don’t need to discuss this if you don’t want to relive it, but you are a survivor of the residential school system. PF: Yes, I attended two residential schools. All of my siblings were residential school students, except for the two that died before they reached * Interview conducted by Bryan P. Schwartz. Phil Fontaine is an Indigenous leader and advocate. Throughout his life, Phil served as Chief of the Sagkeeng First Nation, as the Manitoba Regional Chief for the Assembly of First Nations and the Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs. In 1997, he became the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations. Then, Phil became Chief Commissioner of the Indian Claims Commission (ICC) in 2001. After this, Phil was re-elected as the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations in 2003 and 2006, becoming the first person to serve as National Chief for three terms. Phil has received a multitude of awards including the National Aboriginal Achievement Award, numerous honorary doctorates, the Order of Manitoba, and the Order of Canada. After completing his terms as National Chief, Phil has continued to advocate for Indigenous peoples through initiatives such as the Recognition2Action Campaign.
