Grade 3: Chapter 7 – Division Facts and Strategies Chapter Essential Question: What strategies can you use to divide? Before Chapter Seven Standards After (Grade 2) Grade 3 (Grade 4) Work with equal groups of Operations and Algebraic Thinking 3: Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in Use the four operations with objects to gain foundations for situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g. by using drawings and equations with whole numbers to solve multiplication. (2.OA.3, 2.OA.4) a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. problems. (4.OA.2, 4.OA.3)  I can use models to represent division by 2. Understand place value.  I can count by 5’s, count back on a number line, or use 10’s facts and doubles to divide by 5. Use place value understanding (2.NBT.2) Operations and Algebraic Thinking 4: Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division and properties of operations to equation relating three whole numbers. perform multi-digit arithmetic. (4.NBT.5, 4.NBT.6)  I can use repeated subtraction, a related multiplication fact, or a multiplication table to divide by 8. Operations and Algebraic Thinking 7: Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g. knowing that 8 x 5 = 40, on knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.  I can use repeated subtraction, a number line, or a multiplication table to divide by 10.  I can use equal groups, a number line, or a related multiplication fact to divide by 3.  I can use an array, equal groups, factors, or a related multiplication fact to divide by 4.  I can use equal groups, a related multiplication fact, or factors to divide by 6.  I can use an array, a related multiplication fact, or equal groups to divide by 7.  I can use equal groups, factors, or a related multiplication fact to divide by 9. Operations and Algebraic Thinking 8: Solve two-step word problems using the four operations. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.  I can solve two-step problems by using the strategy act it out.  I can perform operations in order when there are no parentheses.

Each day the math block will begin with 15 minutes of Daily Math Review and Mental Math. The focus of DMR should be either prerequisite standard skills or previous chapter concepts that were not mastered. The focus of mental math should be based on the current Chapter’s skills and concepts. Adjust the amount of questions in DMR and MM to fit into the 15 minute time block.
