Fall Semester

Semester Theme: Journeys impact peoples’ morals, values, and beliefs.

Essential Questions: How are people impacted by physical journeys? What do people learn when through travel? How does conflict influence an individual’s decisions and actions? How are people transformed through their relationships with others? How does perspective shape or alter truth? How do different cultures shape the definitions of good and evil? Do the attributes of a hero remain the same over time? In a culture where people are bombarded with others trying to define them, how do people make decisions for themselves? What are the characteristics or elements that cause a piece of literature to endure?

Performance Assessment (writing): Students will synthesize a variety of sources to compose a thematic analysis.

Core Texts: The Odyssey Life of Pi

Class Objectives: Students will write narrative, expository/informational and argumentative compositions. Students will critically read and analyze a variety of short articles, essays, and literary texts. Students will create multimedia presentations integrating technology. Students will practice proper use of grammar and conventions. Students will gather relevant information from multiple authoritative print and digital sources, synthesizing these sources in formal writing.

Spring Semester

Semester Theme: People are willing to make sacrifices in order to gain personal freedoms.

Essential Questions: What is the relationship between freedom and responsibility? What are essential liberties and how far will people go to protect them? Should people sacrifice freedom in the interest of security? When does the government have the right to restrict the freedoms of citizens? In what ways are language and power inseparable? How is an understanding of culture and society constructed through and by language? What are the factors that move individuals/communities/nations to great sacrifice and what are the consequences? In the face of adversity, what causes some individuals to prevail while others fail? How does an individual form and maintain a true and authentic identity? Performance Assessment (writing): Students will synthesize a variety of informational texts to compose an argument.

Core Texts: Romeo and Juliet 1984

Class Objectives: Students will gather relevant information from multiple authoritative print and digital sources, synthesizing these sources in formal writing. Students will analyze how key ideas and details in both literary and informational texts contribute to the theme/author's purpose. Students will write narrative, expository/informational and argumentative compositions. Students will critically read and analyze a variety of short articles, essays, and literary texts. Students will create multimedia presentations integrating technology. Students will practice proper use of grammar and conventions.
