We are forever grateful to Mallika Advani for her advice, guidance and unstinting support. With the overwhelming support of well-established modern and contemporary artists, art collectors and aficionados; over the past 13 years, Art for Concern has not just promoted Indian art, but more importantly, it has contributed to the socio-economic development of Our special thanks to the weaker sections of our society.

Set up in 1991 with the Arun Vadehra belief that given an opportunity, people have the power to change their own lives; Concern Carmen Kagal India Foundation aims to help the disadvantaged become self-reliant and works towards K. G. Subramanyan ‘Helping People Help Themselves’.

He studied at the Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship, Kolkata and received a gold medal from the Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, in 1986. Bhattacharjee’s A. Ramachandran (b.1935) - A. Ramachandran received a Diploma in Fine Arts and crafts as well as a Ph.D. in mural painting from compositions are influenced by the rural and tribal associations, particularly the Santhal tribe of Bengal. Bhattacharjee recently Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, in 1961. Initially he painted in the expressionist style; but by the 1980s his style had undergone a vital had a solo show in 2013 called ‘Edge of Reason - and Beyond, into Pure Creativity’, presented by Indian Art Circle at Lalit Kala change. After a Achuthan Kudallur (b.1945) - Achuthan Kudallur’s work is known for its mature abstract composition, without representing any Post Baccalaureate in Fine Arts from Maryland Institute, College of Art, Baltimore in 1996, she did a Masters in Fine Art from the recognisable animate object, but imbued with unbounded energy in free flowing forms and colours. He has won the National Hoffberger School of Painting in 1998. In January 2005, she was included in ‘The 50 on the Fast Track’ list by India Today. She has had solo shows in Kent, Baltimore and Mumbai. She New Delhi. London; Maya Gallery, Hong Kong; and also in USA, Dubai, Singapore and Romania. Kudallur lives and works in Chennai. F. N. Souza (1924 - 2002) - Born in Goa, F. N. Souza attended Sir J. J. School of Art in Mumbai before being expelled in 1924 for Ajay De (b.1967) - Ajay De studied at Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata, and did his post-graduate degree from participating in the ‘Quit India’ freedom movement. He was one of the founding members of the Progressive Artists’ Group. During the Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai. Early on, De was drawn to black and white tones and has worked primarily with charcoal ever his last years, Souza’s works have been featured in prestigious museums and galleries across the globe. These include, ‘The Body since. He draws inspiration from his own life experience as well as the complexities of the society within which he functions. His Unbound’ at the Rubin Museum of Art, New York, ‘Picasso Souza’ at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi, and ‘The Path of the Lotus: first solo exhibition was held in Kolkata. His most recent shows were held at Jehangir Art Gallery in 2000. In 2010, Ajay De had a Indian Art’ at Grosvenor Gallery, London. show called ‘A. SYCO’ at The Viewing Room, Mumbai. The artist lives and works in Mumbai. G. R. Iranna (b.1970) - G. R. Iranna was born in Sindgi, Bijapur, Karnataka. He did his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1992 from the Akbar Padamsee (b.1928) - Akbar Padamsee was born in Mumbai, and studied at the Sir J. J. School of Art, before going to Paris College of Visual Art, in Gulbarga. In 1994 he got his Master’s degree in painting from the College of Art, New Delhi. Between and then to New York in 1965 on a fellowship from the J. D. Rockefeller Foundation. Padamsee is best known for his introspective 1999 and 2000 he did an artist residency at Wimbledon School of Art, London. It is said that Iranna’s work has matured faster than ‘metascape’ and figural paintings. The artist has held countless solo and group shows, the most recent of which include ‘The Body expected. Iranna’s most recent solo show called ‘Limning Heterotopias’ was in 2012 at Gallery Espace. The artist lives and works Unbound’, at the Rubin Museum of Art, New York, in 2011-12 and a solo show at Pundole Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2010. He lives in New Delhi. and works in Mumbai. Gopal Adivrekar (1938 - 2008) - Gopal Adivrekar was born in Devgad on the Konkan coast and studied at the Sir J. J. School Arunkumar H. G. (b. 1968) - Arunkumar H. G. graduated from M. S. University, , with a specialisation in sculpture. The of Art in Mumbai till 1963. He held more than 36 solo shows in India and abroad including countries like France, Belgium, The artist manipulates ready-made objects such as toys, plastic, ceramics, hay and TV monitors in varied contextual settings. He has Netherlands, U.K., Italy, Turkey and Kenya. In 1986 he received the National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi. B. Prabha (1933 - 2001) - B. Prabha was born near Nagpur in Maharashtra and studied at the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai. She Haku Shah (b.1934) - Haku Shah was born in Valod, Surat in . Shah is a well-known figurative painter of folk and tribal art. was the recipient of the Bombay State Art Exhibition Prize in 1958 as well as the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society Award. He attended the Baroda School of art and is an authority on folk and tribal art. When Shah used to teach at the Gandhi Ashram in Prabha’s initial experiments developed into a signature formal style. In the last year, B. Prabha’s works have been featured in many Gujarat, he came in contact with the Rani Paraj tribe. He drew inspiration from the Rani Paraj images and collected many of them. shows including, ‘The Body Unbound’ at the Rubin Museum of Art, New York; ‘B. Prabha: From the Album’ at the Viewing Room, He lives and works in Ahmadabad. Mumbai; and ‘Celebrations 2011’ at Kumar Gallery, New Delhi. Jayasri Burman (b.1960) - Jayasri Burman studied at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, between 1977 and 1979. Later, she joined the B. Vithal (1935 - 1992) - B. Vithal was born in Maharashtra. He was a master sculptor and painter who completed his formal art Visual College of Arts, Kolkata, and then went to France in 1984 to learn print making under the guidance of Monsieur Ceizerzi. training from Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai. His paintings and sculptures display a clear understanding of the human form, Much of Burman’s work centres on concerns of the role of women. Her works have been displayed extensively both in India and granted both mediums emote differently. His paintings aren’t necessarily connected to his sculptures and his ability to switch back abroad. Her shows include, ‘Aureus 2011’, Gallerie Nvya, New Delhi and ‘The Mythical Universe’, Art Alive Gallery, New Delhi, in and forth is commendable. They were married in 1956 and exhibited in many shows together. The artist lived and worked in Mumbai. 2010. She lives and works in New Delhi.

Badri Narayan (1929 - 2013) - Born in Secunderabad, Badri Narayan was a self-taught artist, whose paintings were for the most Jogen Chowdhury (b.1939) - Jogen Chowdhury was born in erstwhile Bengal, now Bangladesh. He studied at the Government part narrative and introspective. He received the National Award of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1965. He was honoured with the College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata, followed by a course at Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris, between 1965 and 1967. He is a recipient Padma Shri in 1987. His most recent shows were a group show held at Pundole Art Gallery, Mumbai in 2010 and ‘Black is Beautiful’ of several awards and has participated in the Sao Paolo Biennale and the Havana Biennale, among others. Recently, his works at India Fine Art, Mumbai, also in 2010. In 2012 he had a solo show at The Viewing Room, Mumbai. The artist lived and worked in have been featured in many shows including, ‘Masters Ltd: Limited Editions’, Gallery Beyond, Mumbai, and ‘Of Humour, Wit & Mumbai. Satire’, Gallery Threshold, New Delhi. The artist lives and works in Santiniketan.

Baiju Parthan (b.1956) - Born in Kerala, Baiju Parthan began his career as an engineer and became interested in art after he came K. H. Ara (1913 - 1985) - Born in 1913 in Bolarum near Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, K. H. Ara did not receive any formal schooling across a book on Western art history. He describes himself as an ‘intermedia’ artist. Parthan was one of the early exponents of new or education in the field of fine arts. He held his first solo show in 1942, at the Chetana Restaurant in Mumbai. He later had several media art in the Indian contemporary art scene. He has participated in several exhibitions including ‘Dislocation: Milljuction Part shows, including many with the Progressive Artists Group from 1948 to 1955 in Mumbai, , Vadodara and Kolkata. He 2’, in 2011 at Aicon Gallery, London, and ‘Milljunction: Paintings and Photo-Works by Baiju Parthan’, in 2010 at Aicon Gallery, New had three more solo exhibitions in Mumbai in 1952, 1954 and 1960. He held shows of his work in Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, West York. The artist lives and works in Mumbai. Germany, Russia and Japan. Amongst Ara’s many honours are the prestigious Governor’s Award for painting in 1944, and the Gold Medal from the Bombay Art Society for his canvas ‘Two Jugs’ in 1952. Ara passed away in Mumbai in 1985. K. G. Subramanyan (b.1924) - K. G. Subramanyan was born in Kerala and studied at the Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan. He was also Rajan Krishnan (b.1967) - Rajan Krishnan was born in 1967, in the Thrissur district of Kerala. After completing a Bachelors a student at the Slade School of Art, London. His works have been exhibited in the Biennales of Tokyo and Sao Paolo. They are degree in Economics, Krishnan decided to pursue his true love and signed up for B.F.A (painting) at the College of Fine Arts, in the collections of the Musee del’Art, France, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the National Gallery of Modern Art, Thiruvananthapuram. He then went on to pursue a Master’s degree at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda. Rajan’s New Delhi, among others. The Government of India honoured him with the Shiromani Kala Puraskar Award in 1994. In 2011, his work depicts a reclaimed earth after humanity has abandoned it. His series of paintings pay attention to the changing landscape, as works were featured in ‘The Art of Drawing’, The Guild Art Gallery, Mumbai, and ‘Pause: A Collection’, Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai. He man-made settings are occupied and then deserted in the pursuit of something better. The artist lives and works in Kochi, Kerala. lives and works between Santiniketan and Vadodara. Ram Kumar (b.1924) - Ram Kumar was born in Delhi and graduated from St. Stephen’s College with a degree in Economics. He K. M. Adimoolam (1938 - 2008) - K. M. Adimoolam was born in Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu and completed a Diploma in Advanced attended the Sarada Ukil School of Art in New Delhi and also studied painting in Paris under Andre Lhote and Fernand Leger. Since Painting from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Chennai in 1966. During his lifetime Adimoolam’s works were displayed 1949, he has had over 40 solo exhibitions worldwide.
