FEEDING YOUR KOI Making time to feed your koi at least twice a day is fun important. Your koi will become accustomed to your footsteps and will come to the top of the pond. Koi are now classified as “domestic pets.” They are very intelligent and in time will come to recognize you. There are differing opinions of how much time you should spend feeding your koi. Some books tell you, “feed your koi all they will take in 5 minutes.” Other books tell you “feed all the food your koi will take in 10 minutes.” Since there are varying opinions on this subject it is important to stay with your fish when feeding them. You can see for yourself how much food your koi take in the amount of time you spend with them. You need to figure out the correct amount of time required to feed the fish in your pond. The quantity of food required also depends on the quantity of koi/goldfish you have, size of the fish, water temperature, etc. Remember , koi have no stomachs so their “biological rate” at which the energy derived from food is utilized (metabolic rate) is influenced by their environmental temperature. The temperature of your pond water is a direct factor in your koi’s body temperature and their metabolic rate. This is the single and most important factor when determining what kind of food to feed and the quantity to feed as well.

WHAT TO FEED Koi will eat practically anything will eat. They are classified as “omnivores”, which means they will eat foods which are derived from plants and animals. It is important to make sure your koi get fed a daily diet that is “well balanced”. The MICROBE-LIFT/7 Day Balanced Feeding System™ is prepared to provide the highest level of all required nutrients. All six nutrients are formulated into all MICROBE-LIFT/Koi & Goldfish Foods. There are proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals and water (moisture content. These nutrients provide your koi with body heat, energy and growth material. Every koi has its own nutrient requirements due to its individual size, sex, environment and genetic make-up. Koi are ravenous feeders. They will consume a lot of food in short periods. Koi have no stomach, so while we say it is important to feed them at least twice a day, morning and evening, smaller feedings more often is the more preferred method.

ADDING FOOD SUPPLEMENTS While all of the MICROBE-LIFT/Koi & Gold Fish Foods provide a nutritious diet for koi, there are many food supplements you can add for variety. First, there are the “natural supplements” already found in your pond. Algae can provide some very important nutrients to koi. It is very important not to use chemicals to control the algae in your koi pond. Algae when not “out of control” is important to your pond’s eco-system. Natural products can help your pond to keep the proper balance of algae without harming the pond’s eco-system like chemical algaecides will. Plants provide other “natural” nutrients for your koi. Additionally, there are “prepared food” supplements such as vegatables, fruits, cooked rice, oatmeal, liver, egg yolks and shrimp. However, if the food supplement is not good for your health (sugar, saturated fats, salt) then its not good for your koi/goldfish!

WARNING – “DO NOT OVER FEED YOUR POND” Some koi keepers say, “It’s impossible to over feed koi.” They will eat only when and what they want. However it is possible to overfeed your pond! Uneaten food decay. Ammonias and nitrites build up faster from heavily overfed koi. That is another good reason to spend time with your koi during feeding. Most hobbyists overfeed with a “heavy hand” especially if they don’t have at the time to stay with their koi when feeding. Always remove any uneaten food from your pond.

ASH CONTENT Most brands of prepared koi food contain a high amount of preservatives and indigestible material (ash). Check your koi’s waste, look for large quantities of fecal matter resulting from the diet you are feeding them. Large amount of waste signifies the food contains too much indigestible material (ash). The added waste can result in poor water quality, wasted money and poor nutrition. MICROBE-LIFT/Koi & Goldfish Foods have a low ash content.
