c h a p t e r 4 An Imperiled World Heimskringla “Snorri hefur «tla3 ser aS skrifa veraldarsogu norr^nna manna, fjalla um uppruna norrsnna manna (origo gentis).” (Sverrir Tomasson, Formalar tslenskra sagnaritara a midoldum [1988], 288) Snorri intended to write a world history of the Norsemen, to treat of the origins of the Norsemen (origo gentis). Neither Morkinskinna nor Fagrskinna has a proper title; they are referred to with names that are strictly speaking used for the manu scripts in which they are found—“rotten parchment” and “fair parchment.” The title of the third compilation, Heimskringla, is, as in the case of Islendingabok, taken from the first sentence of the text: “ The circle of the world [‘kringla heimsins’] that is inhabited by people is very indented by bodies of water.” 1 The author describes the great ocean that passes through the Straits of Gibraltar and flows all the way to Jerusalem and thence into the Black Sea, which (in turn) divides the three parts of the world, Asia to the east, Europe (or “ Enea” ) to the west and Africa to the south. The River Don (Tanais) runs down from the north, empties into the Black Sea, and separates Asia from Europe. The area north of the Black Sea is known as “ Svi^joS in mikla” (“Greater Sweden”) or “Svi^joS in kalda” (“Cold Sweden” ) and is no smaller than Serkland (Saracen Land) and is sometimes equated with Blaland (Africa). The Tanakvisl (Don branch) was once called Vanakvisl or the land of the Vanir (a family of gods).2 Thus Heimskringla, unlike Morkinskinna and Fagrskinna, which are strictly chronicles of kings, prefaces its account with a geographical 75 76 The Sagas of Norwegian Kings (1130-1265) setting. -

Many fields of study have devoted different amounts of their attention as to why and when this need occurred, and a special field in Western sciences has devoted its full attention – memory studies. Memory studies will be the starting point of this research, since in all the sources that will be examined later it would be noted that they are oral traditions put in writing much later. The main argument that we will try to make is that the sources give light to traditions and organisational structures much older than the period of their writing, but which were relevant to the time of writing. One of the biggest problems this research faced was the scarcity of this type of historical source in one of the examined regions – namely the Balkan Peninsula. Moreover, memory studies and cultural memory is on first glance something very obvious. In actuality it deals with concepts taken from psy- chology and psychoanalysis and it proved difficult to apply to a linear field of study such as history, which bases its arguments on fixed points and events in time more often than on abstract concepts. This research, apart from using the comparative method of examining the sources, will implement the techniques of memory stud- ies, and history to reveal some similarities in the formation of an identity and specifically how the image of the ruler stands in this identification. -

GRANHOLM GENEALOGY NORSE ROYAL ANCESTRY (Norwegian and Finnish) INTRODUCTION The Norse or Scaninavian mythology has many deities, gods and goddesses. This part begins by listing Norwegian and Finnish ancestors, Njörd and Fjornot. Where the name in the lists are highlighted I have included a biography. There is no clear direct lineage from them, they are intermixed with the Swedish and Danish mythologies. In those separate booklets have I included the information about Odin and others near to him. Here I have shown our lineage from other mythical figures.These lineages do not start from a single person. The lists that follows converge different lineages which all lead to us. So me of the persons are referred to as Kings of Finland. As in all listings of mytological/historical persons there is a gray area where the reader may use his or her imagination in deciding where the transition between myth and history is. But a fact is that somebody was there and had some influence, for instance how a name was established serves as some kind of proof of their existence. See the quotation below: Njörðr's name appears in various place names in Scandinavia, such as Nærdhæwi (now Nalavi), Njærdhavi (now Mjärdevi), Nærdhælunda (now Närlunda), Nierdhatunum (now Närtuna) in Sweden, Njarðvík in eastern Iceland, Njarðarlög and Njarðey (now Nærøy) in Norway. Njörðr's name appears in a word for sponge; Njarðarvöttr. Additionally, in Old Icelandic translations of Classical mythology the Roman god Saturn's name is glossed as "Njörðr". King Thorri of Finland, a descendant of the first king Fornjot, is the 41st great grandfather. -

Abstract This dissertation explores certain attitudes towards Jews and Judaism in Old Norse literature. Regardless of an apparent lack of actual Jewish settlement in the Nordic region during the Middle Ages, medieval Icelanders and Norwegians frequently turned to the image of 'the Jew' in writing and in art, sometimes using him as an abstract theological model, or elsewhere constructing a similar kind of ethnic Other to the anti-Semitic tropes we find in medieval societies where gentiles really did live alongside Jews. -

THE MYTH CONCERNING THE GERMANIC PREHISTORY AND THE EMIGRATIONS FROM THE NORTH. 20. THE CREATION OF MAN. THE PRIMEVAL COUNTRY. SCEF, THE BRINGER OF CULTURE. The human race, or at least the Germanic race, springs, according to the myth, from a single pair, and has accordingly had a center from which their descendants have spread over that world which was embraced by the Germanic horizon. The story of the creation of this pair has its root in a myth of ancient Indo-European origin, according to which the first parents were plants before they became human beings. The Iranian version of the story is preserved in Bundahishn, chap. 15.1 There it is stated that the first human pair grew at the time of the autumnal equinox in the form of a rheum ribes2 with a single stalk. After the lapse of fifteen years, the bush had put forth fifteen leaves. The man and woman who developed in and with it were closely united, forming one body, so that it could not be seen which one was the man and which one the woman, and they held their hands close to their ears. Nothing revealed whether the splendor of Ahura Mazda - that is to say, the soul - was yet in them or not. Then said Ahura Mazda to Mashia (the man) and to Mashiana (the woman): "Be human beings; become the parents of the world!" And from being plants, they got the form of human beings, and Ahura Mazda urged them to think good thoughts, speak good words, and do good deeds. -
