STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE

Playgrounds are responsible for a significant number of childhood injuries with more than 100,000 Australian children requiring medical attention every year. NSW school children are covered by a state wide School Accident Insurance Policy. This is a Department of Education and Communities blanket insurance cover policy. This means that should your child have an accident while attending school or on an approved school outing and you can prove that the school, school teacher or staff member was negligent or contributed towards the incident then you may, with legal advice, be able to make a claim. Many parents incorrectly assume that their children receive automatic cover for accidents where there is no one to blame but we all know that even with the utmost care – accidents do occur. It is not until their child is involved in an accident that they become aware of the absence of student accident insurance where negligence is not a factor.

The P&C’s Student Accident Scheme

The Federation of Parents and Citizens of NSW offers Student Accident Insurance at a minimal cost to help ease the financial burden to parents if an accident should occur. Students can receive 24-hour-a-day protection which covers actual hours a student spends at school, time involved in travelling between home and school on a daily basis, other activities – even those on weekends or during term breaks – which may be regarded as school related e.g. excursions, weekend sporting or cultural activities and extended cover or 24-hour-a-day protection – anywhere in Australia.

A full list of benefits paid by the Student Accident Insurance can be obtained from the front office or on request via email or post. Some examples include:  dental $5,000 (85% of expenses will be paid with a $50 excess of each claim)  permanent loss of the sight of one eye $50,000  broken bone benefit ($50 - $2,000 depending on limb broken)  permanent loss of a limb $50,000 and  tuition costs up to $4,000.

Most private health insurers offer some reimbursement for medical expenses only. Federation’s Student Accident Policy also offers a lump sum benefit for death, serious injuries and broken bones as well as reimbursements for clothing, tuition, emergency transport, bed care benefits and non-medical expenses.

If you need to make a claim, please request a form from the front office.
