Newspaper Project Guidelines and Components List

The focus of this group project is to create a Revolution era newspaper for one of the original 13 American colonies. The paper should cover events through the end of the Revolution and the Treaty of Paris in 1783. The newspaper should contain accurate information for the time period and chosen location. That means you are going to have to do some research. Each editorial team (four students per group) will produce a newspaper that is at least eight pages long. Pages should be 12" x 18"" in size and contain print on both sides of the page. (In other words, you will be writing four two-sided pages.) The newspaper should contain a minimum of eight different sections. Each member of the group should be responsible for two of the sections. Include bylines on the stories to show who did the work. The paper should also include several illustrations to enhance its appearance and support the writing. All publications should include the following sections:

1. News—Report on events that occurred within the colonies/states. At least one article should be on an event that we did not discuss in class. 2. Opinion--Take sides on important and controversial issues facing the colonists. You might want to include a political cartoon. 3. Business--Covers economic issues facing the colonists. 4. International News--Report on what was happening during the time period in other parts of the world. You’re going to have to do some research for this section.

You must also include four more sections from the following possibilities: A. Obituaries B. Comics Section C. Advice Column D. Science & Technology E. Literature & Art F. Crossword Puzzle/Games G. Cooking H. Classified Ads or “Help Wanted”

The editorial staff must come up with a title and format for the newspaper. All pages except for the first should be numbered. A table of contents should appear on the first page of the newspaper. Advertisements may be placed throughout the paper, but should not take up more than ¼ of any given page, with the exception of the classified section.

THE FINAL PUBLICATION DATE FOR YOUR NEWSPAPER IS DECEMBER 11, 2015.
