VCE Physical Education Unit 4 - Psychological Skills Testing (Arousal, Concentration and Confidence) NAME: PARTNER:  In pairs students will perform each test under the given conditions. Students will have the choice of performing all their tests from the Basketball ‘Free’ Throw line – Count the number of successful throws after 10 shots.  Each Psychological condition has been designed to demonstrate the effects that arousal, concentration, pressure and confidence can have on an athlete’s performance.  Throughout the duration of this activity you may see examples of athletes chocking, performing with under or over arousal, displaying low concentration levels or high concentration levels, and performing with a lack of confidence or performing with over confidence.  Each test will be rated in terms of how the athlete performed in terms of their psychological state (1 Poor – 5 Excellent)  Conditions will be generated from each other; therefore each student will be starting at the same test and finishing at the same test.  Note: This activity has been designed to demonstrate a wide range of conditions that can occur in our sporting society, it is not attended to harm or hurt anyone’s reputation. E.g. when we have to sledge each other, we are doing it for experimental purposes only. Control  Each student will have control shot which will be performed under no conditions. Result: ______Psychological State: 1 2 3 4 5 Arousal  Test 1: Low Arousal Conditions –Perform progressive muscle relaxation (PMR).  Test 2: High Arousal Conditions –Move around, dance, and hype each other up (e.g., hip and shoulder). Concentration  Test 1: No Noise Conditions – No music, no talking, no distractions, absolute silence.  Test 2: Noise Conditions – Music, distractions, talking, yelling and even sledging – general put offs. Result: ______Psychological State: 1 2 3 4 5

Confidence  Low Confidence Conditions – lots of negative comments and negative thinking.  High Confidence Conditions – lots of positive comments, goal setting, imagery. Result: ______Psychological State: 1 2 3 4 5
