Non Renewable Resources A Project

The Mining Law of 1872 ….” promote the Development of the mining Resources of the Untied States. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That all valuable mineral deposits in lands belonging to the United States, both surveyed and unsurveyed, are hereby declared to be free and open to exploration and purchase, and the lands in which they are found to occupation and purchase, by citizens of the United States and those who have declared their intention to become such, under regulations prescribed by law, and according to the local customs or rules of miners, in the several mining-districts, so far as the same are applicable and not inconsistent with the laws of the United States.

You and your group will investigate one of the following topics and present a 4 minute power point presentation. You will need hand out for the class that includes an area for note-taking.

Topics  What is clean coal? Where does it come from? How do we get it? Who likes it and why? What is coal gasification? Or liquid coal? Who likes this and why? What is Carbon Sequestration how does it work? Who likes it and why?  Will we run out of Oil? Why or why not? What is the Hubbert Peak? Or Hubbert Peak Graph tell us? What does the economics of oil extraction suggest? What are the predictions?  What are oil sands? Oil shale? How are they extracted? What are environmental issues with this type of extraction? What does industry say? What do others say?  What do we know about cement production? Explain the process of making cement and the role that cement plants play in “burning wastes”. What are environmental issues with this type of process? How is the cement industry connected to the disposal of toxic wastes? What is “eco-cement”? (also know as Novacem's cement-why is it better?)  How does a typically nuclear power plant operate? Where are the nuclear power plants in Illinois located? How safe are their operations? Where is their waste stored? Where does the fuel come from? What does the Nuclear Industry mean when they say we have “newer” or “safer” nuclear power plant designs? How have they tried to address the historic problems? Where are these new plants being built? What laws have helped restart the nuclear energy industry?  Why has liquid natural gas become so popular? What are the challenges with using LNG? With shipping it? With the LGN terminals? Why are cities worried about new LNG storage plants/terminals. How has the extraction of natural gas challenged the people of Wyoming? Why is this a “new’ fuel? How is it used? What can it replace?  What is mountain top removal mining? What is quary mining? Strip mining? Sub surface mining? What are environmental issues with each of these extraction methods? What does industry say? What do others say?  How is gold mined? Where is this being done? What are the environmental challenges of gold mining? What is the Role of Mercury in gold mining? How is it being done in the Amazon? In Indonesia? In America? Canada?
