Sri Iyengar paved the way for establishing Abalashram by marrying Smt.Krishnamma, a childhood widow. The burning ideals of Arya Samaj, his personal zeal for helping deprived women and the support he received from his life partner sowed the seeds. Both of them resolved to make a beginning in a small way and converted their own modest home, which was located at Basavanagudi, Bangalore, into a santuary for abandoned women and totally orphaned girls in 1905. We partner local NGOs, community based organizations and people's movements to collectively address poverty, inequality and injustice. Our focus is on the rights of India’s most marginalised communities: Dalit and indigenous people, rural and urban poor, women, children and minorities. These groups face an acute lack of access to and control over resources, services, and institutions. We pay special attention to those in vulnerable situations such as people living with chronic hunger, HIV/AIDS or disability, migrant and bonded workers, children who are out of school, city-dwellers without a home, and people whose land or livelihood is under threat. We also work with women, men, girls and boys who have been trafficked, displaced, or hit by natural and human-made disasters. Shop Licensing in Bangalore: The Licence Raj! Nandini Hampole & Naveen KR CCS RESEARCH INTERNSHIP PAPERS 2004 Centre for Civil Society K-36 Hauz Khas Enclave, New Delhi 110016 Tel: 2653 7456/ 2652 1882 Fax: 2651 2347 Email: [email protected] Web: www.ccsindia.org “Paying bribe or hiring middlemen to do my job is a way of life for me” says Ramappa, a sweetmeat shop owner, in Yadur market, Bangalore city. Practicing the path of illegality day in a day out is a way of life for most of Bangalore’s small shop owners. This paper documents the difficulties in the opening, renewal and running of a small shop in Bangalore and the different agencies involved in turning this process into a never ending odyssey. Who is to blame for the corrupted legal machinery, the unaccounted money transactions carried out in our city? Is it entirely the fault of the lethargic government system or are the shop owners to blame as well? According to the Karnataka Municipal Act, 1976, a Trade Premises means any premises used or intended to be used for carrying out any trade.1 All shops to operate in the city must procure a trade licence.2 The revenue collected from this forms a huge chunk of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s3 (BMP) budget. Till 2003, opening a shop was a centralised, unending process controlled by the BMP. This meant, no information to the public as to where and how to proceed, or the kind of documents required to be attached when one wanted to procure a trade licence.

PO BOX 763 • Franklin Park, IL 60131 • [P] 260-786-JESU (5378) Website: www.JesusCaritasUSA.org • [E] [email protected] THE JESUS CARITAS FRATERNITIES IN THE UNITED STATES: THE EARLY HISTORY 1963 – 1973 by Father Juan Romero INTRODUCTION At the national retreat for members of the Jesus Caritas Fraternity of priests, held at St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo, California in July 2010, Father Jerry Devore of Bridgeport, Connecticut asked me, in the name of the National Council, to write an early history of Jesus Caritas in the United States. (For that retreat, almost fifty priests from all over the United States had gathered for a week within the Month of Nazareth, in which a smaller number of priests were participating for the full month.) This mini-history is to complement A New Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Msgr. Bryan Karvelis of Brooklyn, New York (RIP), and the American Experience of Jesus Caritas Fraternities by Father Dan Danielson of Oakland, California. It proposes to record the beginnings of the Jesus Caritas Fraternities in the USA over its first decade of existence from 1963 to 1973, and it will mark the fifth anniversary of the beatification of the one who inspired them, Little Brother Blessed Charles de Foucault. It purports to be an “acts of the apostles” of some of the Jesus Caritas Fraternity prophets and apostles in the USA, a collective living memory of this little- known dynamic dimension of the Church in the United States. It is not an evaluation of the Fraternity, much less a road map for its future growth and development.

Abstract Police personnel play a vital role in any society by ensuring stability and security. Police work has been regarded as one of the stressful occupation in the world. The physical threats in police operational duties have been regarded as inherent causes of stress in police work. As hypertension is one of the major global risks factors, and its prevalence is rapidly increasing worldwide. Individuals with hypertension possess twofold higher risk of developing Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and four times higher risk of congestive heart failure compared with normotensive subjects. The policing stage is a very important biophysical social process in which an inadequate diet may affect the performance and intellectual capacity of individuals. Therefore attention needs to be given on health, nutrition and life style to prevent chronic diseases. Objective of this study was to assess the dietary habits with nutritional screening and to identify the prevalence of hypertension among police staff.

सीता राम बाबा Sītā Rāma Bābā סִיטָ ה רְ אַמָ ה בָבָ ה Bābā بَابَا He had a crippled leg and was on crutches. He tried to speak to us in broken English. His name was Sita Ram Baba. He sat there with his begging bowl in hand. Unlike most Sadhus, he had very high self- esteem. His eyes lit up when we bought him some ice-cream, he really enjoyed it. He stayed with us most of that evening. I videotaped the whole scene. Churchill, Pola (2007-11-14).
