Monthly meetings will usually be held on the 4th Thursday of each Month at 1.30pm at Wolsey Hall.

Please note that the doors to Wolsey Hall will not be opened until 1.30pm and the main Meeting will commence in the Hall by 2.30pm.

When you attend the monthly meetings, you should bring your membership card (this year the colour is orange), along to book yourself in at the respective desk. You should also take it to any group meetings. The group leaders will want to keep their own records Visitors A Temporary Membership Fee of £2 is charged to visitors, and a dated receipt will be given. This confers all the advantages of Cheshunt U3A membership, including Insurance for that month only, during which time a group activity can be joined if there is room, on production of the receipt and payment of the usual group attendance fee. Members’ information held by Cheshunt U3A will not be disclosed to any third party Membership Renewal 2015/16 As the Cheshunt membership year ends on 31st October 2015 renewal forms for the 2015/16 year will be available from the registration desk at todays meeting. They will also be available to download from the web-site. Completed renewal forms, with attached cheques, can be left in a box provided at the Membership Secretary`s table at the meeting or mailed direct to her. If paying by cash, monies should be placed in a sealed envelope along with completed forms. Please note that no renewals will be processed at the meeting. New membership cards will be ready for collection at the following months meeting or sent by mail if a stamped addressed envelope has been provided. However, there will be an opportunity on Thursday 5th November between 1pm-4pm at Wolsey Hall specifically for those members who would prefer to renew on the day. Committee members will be in attendance to process their applications. The Committee hopes this will alleviate the congestion that occurred in the hall last year.

NEW GROUPS MOTO (Members On Their Own) The next meeting to be at the Crocodile on Wednesday 28th October at 11.15 am. This will be to discuss ideas and venues, times and dates. We have had positive feedback and visits to Van Hages, lunch and a walk around 3 Lakes have taken place. A great success but as in the past, concerns were raised about the ‘stairs’ at the Green Dragon. Bolivia is a derivation of Canasta played with three packs of cards, easy to learn and a great deal (no pun intended) of fun. The membership is continuing to grow with an average of two members joining each month; however we are still looking to expand. We can guarantee at the end of one session any newbie will understand and be able to play the game. If anyone would like to play or learn how to play, please come along and enjoy a very sociable afternoon. We have now moved to St Clements Church, Cheshunt Wash EN80LU, opposite Hillview Gardens. Dates for next month are Monday 2nd November, 16th and 30th November. (Please park in Hillview). The venue has wheelchair access and will accommodate vehicles in the grounds is necessary.

CHESHUNT and WARE CYCLE GROUP Stewart 01992 624706 Our group meets every Wednesday morning at 9.30am at Pindar Car Park near Cheshunt Railway Station, for a prompt 09.45am start. We have several rides available, which can be divided into either “easy ride” or “moderate/harder” ride. Two Easy rides, one very easy, go from Cheshunt every Wednesday at 0945, staying mainly within the Lee Valley and Gun Powder Park using few or no public roads. Moderate /Hard ride. This goes from Cheshunt on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month starting soon after 0935 and goes further afield.

Epping Forest, Trent Park, Potters Bar area, Broxbourne Woods etc. These rides do encounter some ‘stiff’ climbs, and will cover about 20/25miles in 21/2hrs. Off road tracks are used as much as possible but minor public roads are ridden on. Normally our rides last about two and a half hours, however when there are five Wednesdays in the month, we try to do something slightly different to stretch ourselves! Thus the 5th Wednesday in September saw the group aiming to reach Sawbridgeworth for lunch before returning. Of the 16 members that turned up to ride, six for one reason or another, decided to ride locally and finish at the usual time. The remaining 10 set off for Sawbridgeworth, heading north along the Lee towpath. Waiting for the peloton at Broxbourne, was the ride leader Allen, who took command! The sun shining with quite a stiff Easterly breeze, we continued up the Lee until we arrived at Dobbs Weir, where Allen led the group to the rear of the Fish and Eels and cross country until we emerged on the river Stort at Lower Lock, the first Lock on the river after the Lee. Now on the Stort towpath, we made good progress to Roydon, passing a field of young turkeys oblivious to Christmas approaching. The next section involved going through three sets of kissing gates not quite big enough to take bikes comfortably, so progress slowed slightly. Once through the obstacles, we made good progress into the increasing breeze before reaching The Moorhen PH at Harlow. Allen always dependable for refreshment, gave the group a boost by offering 'jelly babies' all round! Once past Harlow, the towpath became more challenging as we left behind the made up surface, narrow dirt uneven paths can be tricky at times, but we all arrived at the Pie and Mash Shop around 12.30pm. On arrival we were the only customers, which was fortunate for the poor waitress, who found it near impossible to take ever changing orders! The pie and mash was good, but I must admit, I passed on the liquor and had gravy instead! The weather was excellent as it blew us back down the Stort on the return leg. We came across a 'damson in distress' on the towpath near Roydon, she eventually was sorted out after two attempts to repair her puncture! I think she was Polish and told us later in the repair that her husband had carried on riding leaving her with the puncture, “what a gent”. I eventually got home having covered 55km at about 4pm. Once again, well done to Allen Barlow for leading the ride.

EXERCISE GROUP - KEEPING FIT Mary 01992426341 Every Thursday, Wolsey Hall Cheshunt. Cost £3. 9.45 am for registration. Class runs from 10 am - 11 am. The sessions are run by fully qualified instructors whose aim is to ensure that we have fun whilst trying to get fit. 33 of our group took part in a coffee morning to raise funds for MACMILLAN Cancer Support. It also involved doing 200 squats and 50 press-ups plus balancing on alternate legs. Many calories were used; all in a good cause and the wonderful sum of £215.72 was raised.

Thursday 19th November - Classical Spectacular, Royal Albert Hall Monday 7th December–Christmas Lunch–Arcelor Mittal, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Next Planning Meeting – Friday 6th November 10.45 a.m. Cheshunt Free Church. The Group had a very busy August, with 3 trips. We went to the Whitechapel Bell Foundry and heard how they make, repair, and tune the Bells. It is still a working Foundry on weekdays. On the wettest day of the month we had a trip on the Epping/Ongar Steam Railway – very nostalgic. Then on to the Secret Nuclear Bunker at Kelvedon (the rain didn’t matter there!). Most interesting to see were the preparations that were made for a nuclear attack and how lucky we were that they weren’t used. The third trip was to the Hindu Temple at Northaw – a lovely place with a huge community hall. Another group who had joined us had arranged for a light lunch, and they kindly invited us to join them. On a glorious, clear September day we went to The View from the Shard. What wonderful views. Several of us took advantage of London Open House that weekend

and visited Custom House, which was most interesting; also saw a demonstration by the ‘sniffer’ dogs. Recently was ‘The Great Stink’ (London Sewerage System) trip. Great day – starting with a tour in London, then on the Thames from Westminster to Greenwich, with a very good commentary and then to Crossness Pumping Station, with its Victorian ironwork and colourful tiles.

EXPLORING LONDON 2 Linda GOLLOP 01992 629209 and Rosemary TRUNDELL 01992 621155 Thursday 29th October 2015 - Foreign and Commonwealth Office Wednesday 18th November 2015 Neasden Temple (joint visit with Explore London 3) Planning meeting every 3rd Friday of the month at the Green Dragon Pub, Churchgate, Cheshunt 1.00-2.00 pm Our September outing was a visit to Highgate Cemetery. It was a rather cloudy and showery day, which added to the atmosphere of the location, and our guide explained the history of the site. The West Cemetery contains a refurbished chapel, still sometimes used for funerals, and the Egyptian Gateway flanked by two large obelisks that leads to the Circle of Lebanon. At the centre of this is a massive Cedar tree dating back to before 1839 when the cemetery was first opened. Another area of interest was the catacombs, a vaulted gallery 80 yards long that could contain up to 825 coffins. We finished our visit in the East Cemetery at the tomb of Karl Marx.

Our group meets at 2pm on the third Monday of every month at the Green Dragon Pub, Churchgate, Cheshunt [next to Broxbourne Council Offices and opposite St. Mary’s Parish Church]. A large car park can be reached through the pub archway. Our members are researching ancestors as far away as Ireland, Scotland, all corners of England and of course locally in Hertfordshire. At the meetings we have a computer and years of experience to help solve those unexpected problems and queries. Come and join us and have fun discussing our various ailments in an informal way over a cup of tea/coffee and biscuits. We really don’t sit and “moan”, we have a good laugh about our various aches & pains – most of which are associated with getting older. Next meetings are Thursday 12th November and 10th December. On Thursday 10th September we had a very interesting talk by Lucy Watson, Community Fundraiser for Marie Curie. She explained that their care enables terminally ill patients to stay in familiar surroundings of their own homes with their loved ones as their illness progresses. However the demand for their services increases each year and for every family they help, there is another that they can't. Every hour of a nurse's time costs the charity £20, so all support is valuable to them. Unfortunately we were low on numbers, but we still managed to raise £48 for them. Well done group.

MORNING WALKS Rob SCOTT 01992 445288 Due to my incapacity this month, the October walk had to be postponed and will now feature as the November walk. If I'm still a bit 'crook' on the day, then my able assistant Jenny will lead it in my stead. She is always happy to receive help with map reading on the day. The next walk will therefore take place on Tuesday 3rd November, starting at the normal time of 10.00am. It is a 6 mile circular walk (subject to verification from Barry), beginning from the lay-by almost opposite Vintage Court Hotel, Cambridge Road, Puckeridge, SG11 1SA or Grid Ref: 383227. We will initially walk into Puckeridge village, turn left by a car park and then with care cross the busy A10. We then get into the open fields and head towards St Nicholas Church in the village of Great Munden and then on to Levens Green. The Hertfordshire countryside here is beautiful and quiet and you may be lucky enough to see buzzards and hares as Jenny and I did when we researched the walk. There is one hill to climb and unfortunately, three newly ploughed fields to cross. However, on the plus side there are a number of pubs in Puckeridge and a very good tea shop. From Cheshunt, take the A10 north to the first roundabout at the junction with the A120. Briefly turn right on to the A120 towards Standon and then IMMEDIATELY turn left into Cambridge Road, Puckeridge. The lay-by is about 150 yards along on the left hand side. My mobile number is 07594427190 in case anyone has a problem locating the start. December's walk on Tuesday 1st, will be from the Bull in Cottered, followed by the first Christmas lunch of the year; additional parking and directional details will follow in next month's programme. Marilyn will have the menu available at the November monthly meeting, together with a list for people to say whether they would like to attend and their choice of food. A £5.00 deposit will secure your place and a seat on Santa's lap. Ho, Ho, Ho!

SAILING Teresa LEAVY 01438 223860 We sail every Tuesday at Broxbourne Sailing Club as part of Hertford and District U3A Sailing Group. Give Teresa a call if you fancy a taster session or joining. The sailing group is run via Hertford U3a but draws its members from several local u3a's. A report by our own superfit member Stewart Wagstaff. On the 6th September 24 of the group flew out to Lemnos, a Greek Island, to a Mark Warner Leisure Village. Flying by BA we arrived at Lemnos Airport where they average about four landings per day! Thus passage through the terminal was very swift! With glorious sunshine we arrived at the centre to be greeted by very friendly staff, and shown to our various apartments which were built on the side of a cliff/hill that went from sea level to about 150ft above sea level. Curiously, we must have been the oldest there; they had put us all in the apartments on the summit! Most were quite happy with the view! a few of us asked for lower rooms, less of a view, my 'bride' and I were allocated ROOM 101! or as it became known base camp!! I was somewhat relieved to see we were situated in a bay, so when sailing at least 3 sides had land so much less of a chance of me disappearing into the Med and being picked up as a migrant! There was an abundance of sailing craft for us to use, from Wind surfers, single handed and double handed dinghys, to large Catamarans. Then there were excellent mountain bikes along with tennis and Volley Ball to enjoy. Some of our wives had gone along for a more restful holiday soaking up the sun and pina colados! The rest of us not being very competitive, providing we are winning! got well and truly stuck into the sailing , day one saw the first casualty! as one of our number out on a single handed dinghy received a blow to the bridge of his nose from a rapidly moving boom, not a pretty site and he soon became known as “BLACK EYED Pete”. This set the theme for the week as bruises and bumps appeared on the rest of us! At the end of each day there was an organised race of all the sailing craft, which at times looked like carnage but was a great way to end the days sailing. Following the sailing we had our own U3A volley ball team, made our own rules up, playing a mixed assortment of other guests on average 20years younger than us. We had among us a member Andy, who assured us he was County Standard at Volley Ball, Sailing, Cycling and Table Tennis!! However we did find that allowing him to play for the opposition enabled us to win! The Scotsman, he looked about 15yrs!, who ran the mountain bike rides was a little dubious when 6 of our group signed up for the Radio Mast Challenge , the most challenging ride on offer, it started at 6am in the morning! With only two other

guests taking part we all set off in the dark, with the guide, I suspect, carrying a defibulator just in case! However after about eight miles we got to the base of the Radio Mast climb, which has a summit of 1600ft, the young guide was so impressed with us he suggested we had a race to the top!!! We declined this as we could not come up with an agreeable handicap system based on age! Prize giving on the final evening was much anticipated by our non competitive group! We managed not to get a prize for Volley Ball, Andy particularly gutted! Nor in the cycling which must have been as a result of bribery somewhere along the line. However we got brilliant result with our two experienced lady sailors, Joyce and Joyce, who came joint third in the best sailor. Then the best sailor of the week was announced to much anticipation and tense silence .... and the winner is...... Stu... as I stood up to a tremendous ovation and cheering, I was absolutely dumb struck to see another Stu striding towards the stage!!!!!! I am still receiving counselling!!!!!

Bring along your knitting, embroidery, etc or start a new project. We are no experts but we all enjoy creating handmade bits and bobs. We learn from each other and never stop talking! Give us a try!

On our last walk in October, 18 of us enjoyed the glorious autumn sunshine during our circuit of the 70 acres lake.

SOCIAL HISTORY Carole BATTER 01707 879773 On November 3rd Lowewood Museum is opening especially to receive just 20 people from Cheshunt U3A (a couple of spaces are still currently

available) when we will have a handling session of artifacts especially relating to Cheshunt. A date for every ones diary – 5th April 2016. We have an illustrated slide talk from the much-in-demand Richard Thomas, relating to the River Lea –entitled “from Luton to Leyton”. This will cover history, wildlife and development of our lovely Lea (or Lee) river and navigation canal. All members of the U3A will be made very welcome. The next Group meeting will take place on 10th November at 11.15 in the bar of the Green Dragon (no stairs to climb!!) to discuss future visits. A very wet 6th October day took the group to the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Albans. Many of us had visited before but without the benefit of a guide to explain the architectural, historical and religious differences, the changes that had been made over the centuries and the involvement of the Abbey with the Magna Carta. Explaining the new additions for the (possible) 1000 years since Saint Alban, a mere heathen, sacrificed himself to save the life of a Christian – one can wander and just wonder.

COMMUNITY NEWS DIABETES Jean BORRILL 01707 888161 We have been asked to raise awareness of the first meeting in Cheshunt of "Type-2-Together". This is a pilot project, organised jointly by Diabetes UK and the NHS at Addenbrookes Hospital, to set up Peer Support Groups for those living with Diabetes Type 2. Cheshunt has been chosen as one of the first of its kind in this area. It is hoped that by meeting in a Peer Support Group, those living with the condition will be able to share their experiences and discuss information and tips in a very relaxed and informal manner, learn more about diabetes management and well-being and enjoy the support and friendship of others in the same situation. This first meeting will be held at the Beaumont Centre, Rowlands Fields, Turners Hill, Cheshunt on Thursday, 29th October at 10am.to 12 and thereafter every last Thursday in the month. The Peer Support Group Leader, Joan Borrill, is here today and will give any further information required.

CHESHUNT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY meets at Wolsey Hall on the first Thursday evening of each month. There are various speakers at the monthly meetings plus they arrange a number of coach outings to gardens throughout the year. During the past week officers from teams across the Constabulary have joined partner agencies including Hertfordshire Trading Standards as part of a national operation to disrupt and enforce against rogue traders. A rogue trader is someone who cold calls at a resident’s door, often the elderly, and offers to do work on their home or garden which is either unnecessary or vastly over-priced. Offenders can

damage property deliberately in order to obtain money, leave work unfinished and use intimidating behaviour in order to extort money. Victims of doorstep offending and rogue trading tend to be elderly and vulnerable and can suffer terribly both emotionally and physically after an offence. Whilst we’ve been working to target offenders and prevent incidents, it’s vitally important that people know how to prevent it, and even more importantly, of the importance of looking out for older neighbours and if you see any ‘tradespeople’ who may be starting work – how to get help.
