Environmental Science Pangaea Poster Project

Environmental Science Pangaea Poster Project

The rubric can be found on the back.

Directions:

Obtain a copy of the Pangaea cutouts.  Cut out the continents  Color each continent a different color. Be consistent with the coloring on both sets of continents.  Use colored pencils. Do not use markers.  Neatly label each continent so that they will be readable when displayed from a distance  You will need 2 sets of cutouts.  Using t he idea of a jigsaw puzzle, piece the parts together into one landmass to best represent what Pangaea might have looked like a long time ago. Once you are satisfied with their arrangement, glue them onto your poster in the upper left corner.  In the upper right section of your poster, arrange the continents as they look today so you can see the difference. Once you are satisfied with their arrangement, glue them onto your poster in the upper left corner.

Do some research to compile information about Pangaea and Alfred Wegener, the originator of the theory of continental drift. Your poster must include neatly organized, interesting information answering the following questions:

1. Who was Alfred Wegener and what did he theorize? 2. What kind of information or items did he use to support his theory? 3. What exactly was Pangaea? 4. What is the main mineral type that continental plates are made up of? Give a minimum of 3 facts about this mineral. 5. What is the main mineral type that oceanic plates are made up of? Give a minimum of 3 facts about this mineral. 6. What causes the plates to move? What layer of the earth makes up these plates and what layer are the continents/plates sliding upon? 7. Include a picture of the earth’s plates showing the type of boundaries between the plates. Identify the three types of plate movement at the boundaries (convergent, divergent, transform) and what kinds of events are caused by each of the three types of movements. 8. Why do you think our planet’s continents look the way they do today? Support with a minimum of 3 pieces of information based on what you have learned.
