I. Problem: Which brand of gum has the most sugar?

II. Collect Information: Data Table 1 Gum #1 Gum #2 Gum #3

______Quantitative L = L = L = (volume = l ∙ w ∙ h W = W = W = in cm3) H = H = H = Volume = Volume = Volume = Quantitative (mass in grams) Qualitative

III. Hypothesis: (Use an if, then statement)

V. Perform Experiment

Experiment Procedures:

1. Get your desired piece of gum. 2. Measure the length of the gum and record in Data Table 1. Continue by measuring the width (record) and height of your gum (record). Calculate and record the volume of the gum. 3. Mass your piece of gum by placing it, with the wrapper on, on the balance. Record the mass in Data Table 1. 4. Make two qualitative observations about your piece of gum and record in Data Table 1. 5. Using the mass recorded in Data Table 1, record THE SAME MASS for your piece of gum in Data Table 2. 6. When the teacher instructs you, put the gum in your mouth and chew for 1 minute. 7. Place the gum on the wrapper to record the mass (Time 1) in Data Table 2. 8. Repeat steps 7-8 until you have chewed the gum for a total time of 10 minutes under your teacher’s direction. 9. Clean up lab stations. ALL PIECES OF GUM MUST BE THROWN IN THE GARBAGE BEFORE LEAVING THE LAB.

Repeat steps 7-8 until you have chewed the gum for a total time of 10 minutes under your teacher’s direction. 18. Clean up lab stations. ALL PIECES OF GUM MUST BE THROWN IN THE GARBAGE BEFORE LEAVING THE LAB. VI. Analyze Data - Create a graph illustrating your data using a line graph. Time is on the x-axis. Mass is on the y-axis. Be sure to include a Title, label both axes and include appropriate units.

1. How much total mass was lost for Gum #1?______Gum #2? ______Gum #3? ______

2. Which brand lost the most mass?

VII. Conclusion: (Restate your hypothesis, state whether it was supported or rejected and then support your statement using your evidence.)

VIII. Questions to consider: Write your answers in complete sentences.

1. Why is it important to test the gum more than once?

2. Why do we all have to chew the gum for 10 minutes?

3. What happened to the sugar?
