Yet Nuremberg is so much more and has a lot more to offer! This city is not only known all over the world for the “Christkindlesmarkt”, its Nazi-history, its Castle, its Artists like Dürer, its trade halls and everything else you know it for. We as students of the Dürer- Gymnasium who mostly live all around Nuremberg know and love it for much more than the world knows. Living here is a feeling, a life-style. It is a combination between Franconian character and world open and multicultural feeling. Also Nuremberg has two other cities (Fürth and Erlangen), which make up a metropolitan area which has its own charm. The nature, the history, the people, the surrounding villages and cities: It will all enchant you. Maybe also the awesome regional beer and wine will enchant and make things a lot more beautiful. So if you come here, don´t always pay attention to the obvious, but also to the hidden and the "secrets" which are often much nearer to everyday life. In this guide we want to present you, not too well-known little treasures, places often only the inhabitants know and love. Don´t hesitate too much - go explore Franconia and its capital, this guide will show you how to find the best spots possible. Classic Open Air Alright… Rock im Park is quiet an experience for those who like it loud, wild and hard. But with the Classic open Air, the city of Nuremberg shows another face of its style of music. Parts of this earlier fortification included the Laufer Schlagturm, Schuldturm and Weißer Turm. As the city grew, the older moat was filled in and used as building sites, for the Weinstadel, Mauthalle and Sieben Zeilen, to name a few. The construction of the final city wall started already before 1350 and took till 1452/1455 to complete.It increased the area from 200 to 350 meters all around and thus doubled the size of the fortified city, with total wall length of about 5 km. At each of the four main gates (Laufer Tor, Frauentor, Spittlertor, Neutor), the inner and outer walls expand to create a fortified courtyard (Waffenhof) guarded by a massive tower. More than half of the original 128 towers of the city still survive. Excavation of the moat around the new wall was started in the early 15th century and every citizen was required to either help with the work or pay a tax.

Sure enough, Franconia has distinct traditions, dialect and dress. Franconia only became part of Bavaria in 1806, and the conservatism prevalent further south is tempered here by liberal, very laid-back tendencies. (When a Franconian casually says ‘basstscho’ – ‘it fits’ – they’re over the moon; conversely, devastation merely elicits a shrug and a nonchalant ‘werd scho wida’ – ‘it’ll get better again’.) While the people are uniquely Franconian, they share with the rest of Bavaria breathtaking countryside teeming with outdoor pursuits and countless romantic villages and castles. Fit- tingly, the northern half of the Romantic Road – from Würzburg to Dinkelsbühl – runs through this enchanted landscape; it’s covered separately in the Romantic Road chapter ( p252 ). Franconia’s cache of historic cities and towns includes baroque Bamberg, opera-going Bayreuth and its tour de force, Nuremberg.     Danube River “Rivers are roads that move and carry us whither we wish to go.” ~ Blaise Pascal A preferred travel route by rulers since ancient times, this picturesque “River of Kings” carves a winding path through ten modern-day European nations with landscapes characterized by vineyards, forested slopes, wine-producing villages, majestic cities, and imposing fortresses. The Danube River is the second longest in Europe after the Volga. It rises in the Black Forest Mountains of western Germany and flows 1,780 miles east through the heartland of Austria, then Slovakia and Hungary before flowing into Croatia, Serbia, Romania, and Bulgaria where it finally empties into the Black Sea. During Roman times, the Danube was the northernmost boundary of the Roman Empire. Like a string of pearls, Roman port cities and castles lined the Danube. Most are still present today. The river played a vital role in the settlement and political evolution of central and southeastern Europe. Its banks, lined with castles and fortresses, formed the boundary between great empires, and its waters served as a vital commercial highway between nations. This trade corridor along the Danube gave rise to two major empires, the Austrian and Hungarian. They merged under Austria, becoming the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1867. Fließt doch die weit über I Deutschlands Grenzen hinaus bekannte Wiesent mit Ihren Nebenflüssen Trubach, Leinleiter, Püttlach und Aufseß durch die fränkische Schweiz. Zu den bekanntesten Orten gehören Pottenstein, Gößweinstein, Muggendorf, Ebermannstadt, Streitberg, Egloffstein und Wai- schenfeld. Die Fränkische Schweiz ist der nördliche Teil der Fränkischen Alb. Am Rande der fränkischen Schweiz verläuft aber auch noch ein anderes bezauberndes Flußtal, das Tal der Pegnitz. Die Pegnitz entspringt in der Stadt Pegnitz am Osthang des Schloßbergs. Der Großteil des Wassers kommt jedoch nicht aus dieser Quelle, sondern fließt im Lin- denhardter Forst als Fichtenohe. Diese mündet im Stadtgebiet Streckenabschnitt bei Ranna Pegnitz in den Bach der Pegnitz- quelle. Die Pegnitz fließt im Oberlauf in südliche Richtung über Neuhaus und Velden durch den Natur- park Fränkische Schweiz-Vel- densteiner Forst und dann durch die Hersbrucker Schweiz. In Hohenstadt, kurz vor Hersbruck wendet sie sich mit ihren Ver- lauf in westliche Richtung über Hersbruck, Lauf und Nürnberg nach Fürth. Nördlich der Innen- stadt von Fürth vereinigt sie sich mit der Rednitz zur Regnitz.
