Ogonek Digital Archive The most important publication on Soviet culture and everyday life Ogonek was one of the oldest weekly magazines in Russia, having been in continuous publication since 1923. Ogonek had rather inauspicious beginnings. Unlike Pravda or Izvestiia, born, as they were, in the cauldrons of the Russian Revolution, Ogonek, soon after its birth in 1923, came to serve one grand purpose only – to fulfill the task of cultural validation and legitimation of the Soviet system. Ogonek would serve its mission with certain aplomb and sophistication. Lacking the crudeness and the bombast of the main organs of Communist Party propaganda, Ogonek was able to become one of the most influential shapers and reflectors of the public character of the Soviet culture. Every self-respecting Soviet intellectual was expected to read Ogonek if they were to stay informed about the cultural world in which they lived and moved. The importance of Ogonek as a primary source for research into the Soviet Union and bolshevization of its cultural and social landscapes cannot be overestimated. Because of its mass circulation and popularity, it was able to unite Soviet Union’s geographically and culturally diverse population through culturally important and imposing narratives. If in the West, and especially in the United States, cultural trends were the result of complex negotiations between market research, supply, and demand, in the Soviet Union cultural trends were more or less state approved top-down affairs. Ogonek was an important vehicle for the conveyance of the Soviet cultural idiom to the reading public. He had already won Acad- emy Awards and Emmys, and had hit radio commercials and three suc- cessful comedy albums (such as The 2000 Year Old Man). He was a veteran of the writing teams for two of the most cherished series of Amer- ican television’s golden age: Your Show of Shows and Caesar’s Hour. Brooks’s recent association with the highly successful sitcom Get Smart had enhanced his visibility with the public and given him additional industry credibility.COPYRIGHTED Although his movie TheMATERIAL Twelve Chairs (1970) had failed to make any tangible impact at the box office, The Producers (1968) was well on its way to becoming a cult favorite. Yet Brooks was now unable to get any new show business projects off the ground and into production. ‘GARAGE SALE MYSTERY: ALL THAT GLITTERS’ PRODUCTION BIOS JONATHAN AXELROD (Executive Producer) — After graduating from the American Film Institute at 17, Jonathan Axelrod began his entertainment career writing films for Warner Brothers, MGM and Paramount Pictures. He worked on the feature film “A Star is Born” for Barbra Streisand and worked with such directors as the legendary Stanley Donen, Cy Howard, Elaine May and John Frankenheimer. He also wrote “Every Little Crook” and “Nanny” for MGM. From 1977-1983, Axelrod developed and supervised more than 40 telefilms for ABC Television, ® including the Emmy winning “Jericho Mile” and “Friendly Fire.” Axelrod was also responsible for ABC’s highest rated show, “The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders.” He was promoted to Vice President of Drama at ABC, steering the direction for “Dynasty” and “The Greatest American Hero,” among many other prime time hits. In 1983, Axelrod segued to Columbia Television, where he was executive vice president of Worldwide Production. There he revitalized the company and put ten shows on the air including “Designing Women,” “Mike Hammer,” “Crazy Like a Fox” and in New York “The Mickey Rooney Show.” He also helped Columbia become a major supplier of telefilms, with such productions as “The Blue and the Grey,” “RFK,” “Sadat” and “LBJ the Early Years.” In 1986, Axelrod then took over as president of New World Pictures for a three-year term. For this start-up company, he oversaw such feature films as “Crimes of Passion” with Kathleen Turner and “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” as well as the critically acclaimed series “Crime Story” and the miniseries “Sins.” As an independent producer, Axelrod produced the Cable Ace Award winning movie “Against the Wall” for HBO, “The Secret Passion of Robert Clayton” for USA and “The Price She Paid” for CBS, as well as the syndicated series “Hollywood Babylon.” From 1992-2003, Axelrod continued his association with John Frankenheimer where their company was involved with “Wallace” (HBO), “Andersonville” (TNT), “Burning Season” (HBO) and “RFK” (FX). -
