TROOP 166 TRIP BULLETIN Stafford Creek – Navajo Pass - Overnight BackpackJuly 25-26

DESTINATION This is a 5.5 mile hike (11 miles round trip) with a 3000 foot elevation gain in the Teanaway area near Cle Elum. The trail winds along Stafford Creek and then ascends up to an open meadow with views of Mt. Stuart.

DEPART Meet at Wedgwood Presbyterian Church (WWPC) parking lot at 8:00 AM Sat, July 25th for car load-up and equipment drop off. The patrols will start departing at 8:30 AM. Rosters, maps, and driving instructions will be provided. PROGRAM This is an overnight backpack trip, and highly recommended as a “warm up” outing for scouts going on the following 50 Miler backpacking trip in August. The outing will have a focus on backpacking efficiently as well backcountry skills. Adult drivers will need Northwest Forest Passes for the vehicles parked overnight. Scouts will be expected to pack and carry all of their own gear in backpacks.

ROUTE Drive from WWPC West on I-90 across Snoqualmie Pass to exit 85 – East Cle Elum. Cross the freeway on the overpass and turn right onto Hwy 970. Cross the Teanaway River bridge, and in one mile turn left on to Teanaway Road. Proceed on Teanaway Road, bearing right where it becomes the North Fork Teanaway Road, followed shortly by unpaved Forest Road 9737 at 29 Pines Campground. At the first junction after crossing the bridge over Stafford Creek, turn right onto FR-9703, which is signed for Stafford Creek and drive 2.5 miles to Stafford Creek trailhead. There is a parking area for approx. 20 cars in the lot, and parking is allowed on the road, but keep in mind that other cars have to pass, so when parking on the road leave enough room for traffic to get by. A toilet is available at the trailhead. Drive time approximately 2 hours.

EQUIPMENT Scouts should be fully prepared for a remote backcountry experience. There are no facilities at the meadow we will be backpacking into and camping overnight. Scouts should be prepared for rain, hot and/or cold weather. It is also likely that there will be no campfires allowed. Dress in layers you can shed. Wear hiking boots. There are extensive sections of the trail that are exposed to the sun. Bring a sleeping bag, camp pad, light cooking supplies and personal kit. Bring a pocketknife, first-aid kit, flashlight or headlamp and batteries.

FOOD The patrols are responsible for preparing dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. Each patrol will invite an adult to join them. Scouts are to bring a sack lunch and snacks for Saturday. After the hike out on Sunday morning, we will stop in Cle Elum for lunch.

FEE $20.00 CASH covers transportation. Provide an additional $8.00 CASH to your patrol grub master for food (adults, too). Scholarships are available. Contact Bill Montgomery at least 5 days prior to the outing. Pick-Up The scouts will phone as soon as they are close to the Church. An estimated arrival back to the church is 3pm, give or take an hour. SIGN-UP Signed permission slips and $20.00 CASH need to be turned in at the last Troop meetings on June 1 st, or arrange to get your permission slip to Wes Kutch or prior to the end of June. This release is effective for the time during which my child is participating in a Troop 166 Boy Scout outing, including traveling to or from activities.
