Life Stages of Personality Development- a. Teenage Years ( 13-19 ) 1. Puberty-_Physical changes marking the beginning of manhood/womanhood. Girls:___12______Boys:______14______2. ___Adolescence ______- mental and social changes. Three questions asked during adolescence: 1. Who am I? - Attempt to discover your identity - Grow through activities and people - Desire to belong *Peer Group-_People of the same age range with similar interests. Friends_

Where are values learned? - Family - Friends - Media - Religion - School What can you value? - Life - People - Family - Material Things - Freedom 3. Where am I going?

b. Young Adulthood ( 20-40 )

Most people:

- go to college - start careers - reach emotional maturity - make decisions and understand consequences - marry/family

c. Middle Adulthood ( 40-65 ) Most people:

-refect on life choices -physically change -retire -confront death

d. Late Adulthood ( 66-death ) Some people: - mental and physical deterioration - enjoy life relaxing with family and friends - confront death even more so Emotions:__ Feelings and related actions to situations __

1. Love- A feeling of deep concern and affection

a. Types of Love:

i. Friendship

ii. Family

iii. Romantic

iv. Community

2. Anger- A strong feeling of displeasure

3. Fear- Feeling scared or believing you are in danger

Fear leads to:

Anxiety:__Fear of the unknown __

Jealousy:__Fear of losing something/someone you have ___

Envy;_Fear you cannot get what someone else has ___

Phobia:__An exaggerated/unrealistic fear ___

4. Grief- A deep feeling of sorrow caused by the loss of something you cannot get back._

Grief is a process:

1. Denial: refusing to believe it happened.

2. Anger: frustration over the loss.

3. Bargaining: attempting to find ways to get it back.

4. Depression: Realizing you can’t get it back.

5. Acceptance: Accepting the loss and moving forward with your own life.

5. Happiness- A feeling of contentment and well-being._

*Dealing with emotions in a mature and healthy way is sometimes difficult. Some people choose to use __Drugs and Alcohol ______or __Defense Mechanisms____ to help them deal with these painful emotions. This can lead to emotional immaturity.

* Stress-____The body’s response to a physical or mental demand. Ex. Sweating, Shaking, ____

* Stressor-___The physical or mental demand. Ex. Standing up in front of the class for a presentation.

Types of Stress:

1. Eustress: Good Stress with a positive result

2. Distress: Negative Stress with a negative result

Psychosomatic Illness-__A physical disorder caused by stress rather than an actual problem within the body.__

- Ulcers - Nausea/vomiting

- Fatigue - Overeating/undereating

- Migranes/headaches - High Blood Pressure

Depression-__Prolonged feelings of helplessness, hopelessness and worthlessness___

Symptoms:

- sleeping too much/too little - loss of appetite - lack of interest in favorite things - withdrawn from family/friends Factors that may influence the development:

- family history - major life stressors - physical illness -substance abuse -gender??? Suicide-__The taking of ones own life intentionally. ___ Third leading cause of death among people between the ages 15-24. The second leading cause of death between the ages 15-19. *Permanent solution to a temporary problem!!!

Mental Illness-___Any disease that affects the emotions, thought, personality of someone.__

2 classifications of mental illness:

1. __Organic____- mental illnesses with known, physical causes.

a. tumors b. drugs/alcohol abuse c. high fevers d. accidents/falls e. chemical imbalances f. environmental factors g. birth defects h. identifiable brain malfunctions

Examples of organic disorders… A. __Delirium______- confusion and loss of awareness of the environment. (not sure what day it is, where they are, who they are).

1 sign of the disorder is __hallucinations____- seeing, hearing, or sensing something that does not exist.

B.__Dementia ______- severe and irreversible loss of mental ability (brain degeneration).

Example: Alzheimer’s Disease

C. Mental Retardation- determined by IQ levels. (normal =100)

1. Severe or profound- _Below 30_____

2. Trainable- _30-50____

3. Educable-___50-75____

2. Functional Disorders-

Mental disorders caused by the something other than 100% known physical/anatomical reasons.

Examples of functional disorders…

A. _Mood disorders__-single, often painful mood rules the whole personality.

1. __Clinical Depression___- ongoing feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness.

2. __Mania___- impulsive, out of control, extreme energy.

3. __Bi-Polar Disorder______- alternate extremes of emotions, wildly happy to

severely depressed.

B. __Anxiety Disorders_____-Fear that lasts a long time and interferes with pleasure and daily life.

1. __Panic Attacks____- sudden attacks of terror.

-can lead to phobias (constant, unreasonable, exaggerated fears).

Claustrophobia__fear of small spaces___ Acrophobia__Fear of heights____ Aquaphobia__Fear of water__

2. _Obsessive Compulsive Disorder__-presence of unwanted thoughts, emotions, or behaviors.

Obsession: Reoccurring thought you can’t get rid of. Compulsive: Urgent, repeated behavior.

C. Somatoform disorder- _There are physical symptoms with no REAL cause. Thinking themselves sick_

1. Hypochondria-_Undo anxiety over one’s own health__ (not the same as psychosomatic which is REAL pain caused by stress)

D. Personality disorder- Difficulty interacting with others. Even with professional help these individuals are hard to rehabilitate. The individual is not made uncomfortable by his/her behavior. 1. __Anti-social personality disorder __-no respect for the rights of others, feel bitter and cheated,

feel they deserve whatever they can get. Rules do not apply to them.

Paranoid personality disorder- ___A person is convinced that everyone is out to get them.__

2. _Obsessive Personality disorder__-constantly concerned with rules and standards. Angered

when they cannot control others, set in ways.

3. Passive-Aggressive personality disorder- causes people to resist cooperating with others in a

non-confrontational way.

E. _Dissociative Disorders__-dissociation from or interruption of a persons fundamental aspects of waking consciousness.

1. Amnesia-___Loss of memory due to brain injury____

2. _Multiple personality disorder__-single person changes between 2 or more separate

personalities.

F. __ Schizophrenia __-severe mental disorder that develops between the ages of 15-25 that is characterized by:

a. Hearing voices b. Paranoia c. Poor Hygiene d. Irrational Behavior e. Break From Reality f. Violent episodes

Treating mental illness- most people experience only short term mental duress. When these feelings last for prolonged periods of time then professional help should be sought.

1. Psychotherapy- __Dealing with problems through communication__

b. _Behavior Therapy__- focus on changing the behavior rather than the reason for it.
