Lord of the Flies Questions Directions: Below are questions for every chapter of Lord of the Flies. You do NOT have to do these questions! They are simply here for you to use as a guideline when you’re reading if you have trouble retaining information.
Chapter 1: The Sound of the Shell (pgs. 7-32) 1. How did the boys get to the island? Briefly describe the island. 2. How does Ralph summon the other boys to a meeting? 3. How is the choir described as it approaches? Who is its leader? What kind of impression does he make? 4. Roger suggests that the boys vote on a chief. Why does Jack say he should be elected chief? Who is elected? Why is he elected? 5. When the boys are exploring, how do they regard their situation? 6. Who are the explorers? Three of the main incidents during the exploration revolve around (1) pushing the rock, (2) the candle buds, (3) and the pig. What do we learn about the boys from these incidents? 7. Briefly make a list of character descriptions for each character listed: Piggy, Ralph, and Jack.
Chapter 2: Fire on the Mountain (pgs. 32-48) 1. How do the boys act during the meeting? 2. What concern does one of the small boys bring during the meeting? (pg. 33) How do Jack and Ralph’s approach to this problem differ? 3. What 3 major roles have Jack and his choir taken in the society? 4. What do the boys do in hopes of being rescued? How is this accomplished? 5. What happened to the “littlun” with the birth mark? 6. How does Piggy behave in this chapter? Is he being rational or irrational? Explain.
Chapter 3: Huts on the Beach (pgs. 48-58) 1. What is Jack doing at the beginning of the chapter? How is he described? Why is he described this way? 2. Who are the boys involved in building the huts? 3. Jack and his hunters are responsible for keeping the fire going, yet in this chapter their main concern begins to shift. What are they most interested in? 4. What is Simon doing on pages 50-52? How is he described? How does this contrast with the description of Jack at the beginning? 5. How is Ralph doing as a leader so far? Do you think Jack would’ve been more successful up to this point? 6. What is the symbol of order and communication? What stopped the control? Describe this situation.
Chapter 4: Painted Faces and Long Hair (pgs. 58-76) 1. How are the lives of the "littluns" distinct from the "bigguns?" (pg. 54) 2. Describe what Roger is doing to Henry (pg. 56). What does this indicate? 3. Why does Jack paint his face? (practically? psychologically?) 4. Relate what transpires when Ralph sees a ship pass in the distance. 5. What happens between Jack and Piggy? 6. What do the bags do at the end of the chapter? What does this show about their society?
Chapter 5: Beast from Water: (pgs. 76-95) 1. Why does Ralph call an assembly? What do they discuss? 2. How does Jack behave at the assembly? 3. How do Piggy's and Simon's attitude about the beast differ?
Chapter 6: Beast from Air (pgs. 95-109) 1. What does Golding describe at the beginning of the chapter? 2. Describe what Sam and Eric see. 3. What does this discovery do for Jack? 4. What do the boys do while they're supposed to look for the beast?
Chapter 7: Shadows and Tall Trees (pgs. 109-124) 1. What do the boys do after their encounter with the boar? 2. What does Ralph see at the end of this chapter?
Chapter 8: Gift for Darkness (pgs. 124-45) 1. What happens to the society after the next assembly? 2. Describe the way the hunters kill the sow. 3. What do they do with the head? 4. Explain what happens between Simon and the Lord of the Flies.
Chapter 9: A View to a Death (pgs. 145-155) 1. Who emerges as the leader? How does he do it? 2. Describe the dance they do explaining in detail.
Chapter 10: The Shell and the Glasses (pgs. 155-169) 1. How do Ralph and Piggy feel the morning after the "dance?" 2. Who is left in Ralph's tribe? 3. Why do Jack and his hunters raid Ralph's camp?
Chapter 11: Castle Rock (pgs. 169-183) 1. What do Piggy and Ralph decide to do about the raid? 2. What is Roger's response to Piggy's plea? What happens to the conch?
Chapter 12: Cry of the Hunters (pgs. 183-203) 1. Who warns Ralph that the tribe is after him? 2. How do the savages try to flush him out of the forest? What does this symbolize? 3. How is Ralph saved? How is this ironic?
